The sushi chefs were very inviting and created very beautiful looking rolls. We were able to get in on a Saturday evening witho The sushi flavor profiles were just… wrong and weird. We checked-in via Unilocal for free«Chef’s Choice Hand Roll» they gave us a very uninteresting and uninspired spicy tuna hand roll. it was just okay. The kids next to us had an awesome looking«kids meal» bento box. however, the place isn’t really well suited for kids.

Came here with my family to celebrate an early birthday dinner. I saw that it was super Unilocal friendly, reservations and a free hand roll with a check in. I got the sushi okamase in which the chef chooses the sushi brought to you. Throughout the course I had fish id never thought of eating. Literally over 18 different types of sushi.

Street parking two hour limit. Place is cozy right off Highland you can see the ocean. Food was ok. Had the bento box with miso cod. Great flavor on miso cod. The sushi was fresh but had better ones elsewhere. Tofu agadash was ok not worth trying again.

I like the lunch bentos there. they are of a great variety and selection. I picked the shio salmon and tempura lunch special. It came with some sushi too. I think it was $ 13 or something like that… I went there for a late lunch so it wasn’t that crowded there. I am sure their happy hour is really busy, because it looks like a good deal, and their location is pretty small. I think the location is good, but sometimes the parking is a pain in the neck. They can’t really help that much though, but I have driven by and skipped on it cuz it was hard to find a place to park.

Service was wonderful. They were all super friendly but not overly fake friendly. Once in a while when they saw your glass of beer was low they would come over unannounced and refill your beer without interrupting your conversation. Very cozy place. Sushi was really good. The unagi was so good we ordered it three times during the course of the meal. Best unagi I’ve had at sushi restaurants but I also don’t order it that often so my opinion may be skewed. All the other sushi we ordered was also very good. A little pricey. My only real complaint is the seating. There were quite a few 2 person tables placed very close together. When they sat us, they put us directly next to a couple on a first date. I was able to hear everything they talked about and it was a little hard to concentrate on my own conversation. The seating was a little too close for comfort and felt too intimate. Would definitely come back for moren

If you’re looking for a solid sushi place in Manhattan Beach without all the hobnob and über expensiveness of Manhattan Beach than Sushi Akatora is your place. We originally were going to go to Kayutsa, and although that place is great, we were looking for something low-key, good and at a not kill my budget price. Sushi Akatora was the perfect place. Upon arrival one of the waiters was delivering food on a hover board. Cool. We sat down and they gave us edamame on the house. Super Cool. We ordered a couple of miso soups, and a white tiger roll. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves, ate good food, and a had a great time!

This place was amazing. We went on a Wednesday night with no reservation and were seated almost immediately at the bar, which my dining companion prefers because he likes to interact with the chefs. There seemed to be only one waiter working so we did have to wait a bit for drinks, courses, etc, but we had a relaxed evening planned so it was fine. The standout, interestingly, was the cauliflower. It was sweet and tangy with tons of toasty pine nuts. I eat low-carb mostly, so it was nice to have a good side dish available. We also ordered a ton of sashimi and it was beautiful and fresh. If I lived in the area, I’d definitely be back! Oh, and they have a check-in offer for a free hand roll and the chef was totally accommodating when I told him I don’t eat rice. It was delicious!

What a cute place! I wandered in looking for some noodles and something fresh. I ended up ordering udon, and spicy tuna stuffed shishito peppers(they were a special item as compared to the usual kind), then being surprised with a free spicy tuna hand roll with my check-in. What a way to go! The udon was comforting, perfectly balanced flavor and noodle to broth ratio wise. The shishito peppers were fun. They weren’t spicy at all to me(to others this may be different). The crunch from tempura, with the softness of the tuna, was such a textural treat. The spicy tuna hand roll was flavorful, fresh, and low on the spice scale as well. Service was absolutely superb. My glass never hit empty, and my waiter made sure I had everything I needed. This is a good discovery.

Very delicious, intimate sushi joint with great service. We had a lot of the happy hour items: blue crab hand rolls, salmon skin hand rolls, scallop hand rolls, shisitos, edamame, salmon carpaccio etc. everything tastes great and fresh. They have fun kids meals too in little sushi boats. Really fun for the kiddos. Definitely will go back.

I had conch clam sushi, salmon Toro(salmon belly) sushi, scallop sushi, Toro with seared foie gras, and cauliflower. Everything tasted so fresh. I’ve been around trying sushi places but they really impressed. This is definitely my new sushi spot in MB!

I have dined here twice and both times have been good food, good service, good ambience. Most recently I tried their kanpachi, Aji, and ikura. All very fresh. Tried a few of their carpaccios; they were all well seasoned and yummy. A must is their sweet potato dessert :) so good.

Small sushi joint in northern MB. Food is delicious but more on the pricier side. I think a bit more than Izakaya down the street. The staff is great and they always great you when you walk in. The happy hour hand rolls are the best. There is spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, salmon avocado, yellow tail, or California to choose from. I believe it’s only from 5−630p daily. Got Uni and it was fresh and melts in your mouth!

I’ve been here for lunch and dinner and the sushi has always been solid. I love the trios they put together, they have trio of salmon, white fish, and toro. You can choose from sushi or sashimi. The service can be hit or miss sometimes. The desserts here are good too. I’ve had the sweet potato mousse and chocolate cake. I’d love to come back and try the omakase.

Great happy hour menu! This charming sushi restaurant is a great casual dinner spot in Manhattan Beach. The star of the show was the popcorn shrimp on spicy tuna. Very exciting. California rolls are a treat with real crab and soy paper. The shishito peppers were poorly seasoned and probably the worst I’ve ever had. Would definitely come back for the other happy hour items.

1 free hand roll when you check in! Happy hour until 6:30. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have the Kobe beef dog anymore even though it was on the happy hour menu. Our waiter said that they’re in the process of updating their menu. What we did order we enjoyed. Everything was really fresh. We had the caramelized cauliflower and the Brussels sprouts off the happy hour menu and we got the white tiger roll and lobster roll. This place is located on the corner of highland and rosecrans. Metered parking is available in the structure across the street.

I had a perfect experience here. Tried this place for the first time yesterday and went in during happy hour– the yellowtail was so fresh it brought tears to my eyes. Everything was on point and utterly delicious. The sushi chefs were incredibly friendly and the service was excellent and genuine. Everyone had a really good vibe there. So excited about my new find! This place is a gem! I had 2 orders of cauliflower(so good), shishito peppers, edamame, miso, the akatora roll and a seared tuna special with ponzu sauce. Their hot sake is really good/better than most imo. YUM!!!

Delicious, authentic Japanese food! The main downside is the parking(there is not lot as Akatora is a few blocks from the beach), however there is street parking available if you don’t mind walking. We visited during DineLa which is $ 25 for lunch. It included an appetizer, a choice of chirashi bowl or sashimi platter(we got both) and a dessert(green tea crème brûlée). The best was the chirashi bowl but it wasn’t too large. The fish is fresh and nothing to complain about, just overall this restaurant is kind of pricey and will leave you feeling hungry.

This place has great reviews, so my hubby and I wandered in to give it a shot. To be honest, it was just okay. The restaurant itself was really cute, and fish tasted good, but it was just alright. The sushi rolls had way too much rice, making the pieces huge… like to the point where some pieces were difficult to eat. I like being able to put the whole piece in my mouth, instead of taking bites, but I had to take bites with these pieces. Once you start taking bites of the pieces, they fall apart, then your sushi becomes a mess. Another point is that the food was way too expensive. We could only afford to have a few things because a full meal would have put us way over. I was really excited about the check-in offer, which included the option of either a California hand roll, or a spicy tuna hand roll. We both opted for the spicy tuna hand roll, and it was pretty good, and a nice start to the meal. We ordered the spider crunch roll, the uni and tofu special, and another special roll with toro in it. The fish tasted good, but again, there was just too much rice, and the pieces were too big. I was actually surprised at this issue because the place seems to have it together, otherwise. It’s cute and a fun place to bring friends. It’s small, but it can get pretty loud too.
