Garden Deli & Pizzeria

Having lived in Upstate NY for years, I was worried what the wings would be like (and amused that the sauce choices are just ‘with and without sauce’)– but the wings blew us away. (Tasty, interesting spice flavor– not just burning hot, crispy and monster HUGE).
We almost delayed our trip home to Durham until they opened for the day, so we could get more :-)
The pizza was terrific too– we got the Rustler and the toppings were plentiful & yummy (maybe the sausage could have a little more spice/​zip/​interest), but we loved the pizza.
Also, we had a great time chatting with the owners & they made us feel like locals.
This is definitely on our list for a return trip this summer!

We love garden pizza! It’s so good, great price an doesn’t take as long to deliver as some pizza places that are closer to our home! You won’t be disappointed

Not bad and not really great either.

I chose this place based on other Unilocal reviews and was not disappointed. I have no pictures because we were starving and ate without thinking to. We got their cheesy garlic bread which was so damn good and fresh, not frozen. I made the mistake of getting a large for two people, it was LARGE! Huge slices too. We just got pepperoni but it was very good and the sauce was delicious. When we took leftovers home everyone ate the rest that night. I will be going back next time I’m in the area.

We always visit Garden Deli while on vacation. They have great pizza and sandwiches. Wish it was a bit bigger for our large family, but we make it work! Always friendly staff!

Just horrible. I have given this place numerous attempts but the food is not very good and the staff is incompetent. I have tried delivery and take out and it is just not worth it. I will find another way to eat.

Stopped in while on vacation in the outer banks with mi familia. Pizza was ok the Tuscan panini was lack luster in that the bread was not even toasted it was cold, which made the sundries tomatoes hard to eat all of which was a shame because the flavor profiles had potential. Lastly some fly paper would go a long way to enhancing the interior dining experience. What made up for all of the aforementioned was the pleasant service and the owners attentiveness.

We always get a large pizza when we stop in Manteo for our yearly vacation. The sauce is really good. Our children are not huge pizza fans, and they ask to visit this restaurant every time. The food is inexpensive and the staff is always friendly!

Wanted to stay in for the night and decided to go for delivery take out. When the pizza finally arrived 20 minutes after the time projected the order was incorrect and the pizza was at best warm. Once the pizza was microwaved to a acceptable temperature it was good! Wish the service and delivery were also.

Pizza was very good with a lot of cheese. I would not classify as great or exceptional.
Italian sub would have been better on crispy Italian bread but I am sure obtaining on OBX would be a problem.

The subs were very good! Like the homemade bread!

Mediocre at best. We decided to give Garden Deli a try since it had 4 stars on Unilocal.I ordered a sub and it was only okay. The bread didn’t seem as fresh as I would have expected from a place that had gotten such high ratings. My husbands meal was very disappointing. He ordered a panini that ended up just being on slightly toasted white bread and was definitely not a panini. Also, the chips were borderline stale.
On the plus side, the fries were very good and the fried Mac and cheese triangles were decent.
So I guess if your meal is coming out of the fryer you might get a great meal.

Went here the first part of July 2013. Read the reviews and decided to give it a shot.
Wish we hadn’t.
The place is tiny and was NOT clean when we went in around lunch time. We were the only customers when we walked in. We ordered, were given cups to get our drinks and there was no ice in the machine.
It was then that I noticed a man watching us from a corner table. I had thought he must be a customer about to leave when we walked in because he was balling up some trash, but he sat back down in front of a laptop.
So we got drinks with no ice and sat down. Some other people came in and ordered, tried to get drinks and complained there was no ice to the girl at the register. The guy at the table got up looking all irritated and went behind the counter and brought a big bucket of ice and dumped in the machine. Said absolutely nothing to anyone the whole time. He went back and sat down at his table.
Shortly after this a woman and small girl came in and walked directly behind the counter to where the food was being prepared. The girl grabs something and heads to the man at the table. By this time we figured out he must be the owner and they his family.
Overall the sandwiches were not bad, just ok. BUT the owner sitting at that table, the family running back and forth behind the counter and the fact that it took a customer complaining about no ice, when there obviously was some ice (he was just too lazy to get up and get it) is too much for us.
Terribly sorry we stopped here and wasted our time and money.

The pizza was very good, especially for the beach. One night we ordered delivery — I think it was mushroom and garlic, maybe with ground beef? The delivery was prompt and the food above average. Order from here when you just want to take it easy.

Nice little small town sub-​shop and pizzeria. Not many options close to here for pizza, and that is what I was craving. Tried the pizza — On a scale of 1 to 10 I thought it was a 6/​10, the friend with me rated it a ⁷⁄₁₀. The crust is on the lighter side — pretty crispy. The toppings were fresh and tasty. The sauce was good. Service is nice and was pretty quick too. The BIG GRIPE I have is they serve «Peak Iced Tea» from the machine that uses concentrate and tastes awful. Its offensive, especially in the south. Its not that expensive or time-​consuming to brew proper iced tea. Hopefully that’ll change, but otherwise this place is a great little sub and pizza shop.

So you really don’t know what to expect when you walk in the place but we were starving so we stayed. My party of 4 all got something different. I got chicken fingers which are hard to mess up but they were particularly yummy here (the honey mustards is delicious).
Also, the spicy fries (I can’t remember if that’s what they’re called or not) have to be ordered! They were so good everyone was stealing them from me. Perfectly spiced and crispy!

Pro: The service was quick and friendly, and the onion rings were fantastic. Sandwiches were okay.
Con: Went here for the pizza, and was disappointed. We all ordered pizza by the slice. The pizza was significantly over-​cooked. Neither the sauce nor the crust were anything special. I was surprised to see that individual toppings could be ordered by the slice. What they do is pile toppings on cheese slices after they come out of the oven… yuk. The mushrooms were canned, not fresh.
Overall, if you want a quick sandwich and some Ruffles potato chips this is an okay stop. But even Domino’s rates higher on pizza.

Yum. Great Local Pizza! Must try.

We’ve been coming to the OBX for years and no visit is complete without some pizza from Garden! Best on the beach! Try the subs, too, on their fresh baked bread. Yummmm! Give Garden a shot and you’ll understand why they have such a loyal fan base.

Best pizza on the OBX. We have been coming to the Outer Banks for 30+ years — for full Summers, holidays, and the like. Pizza joints have come and gone, but when this place opened 15 years ago it was Heaven sent! Every time we come anywhere near Roanoke Island, we have to grab a slice or a whole pie. The owners Jamie (also the Mayor of Manteo) and Nadine bake all of the shop’s bread fresh each day — sub rolls, paninis, etc. Super yummmm. If you are not in the mood for great pizza, try the Philly cheese steak on a grilled sourdough panini. Ok I’m salivating too much. Man I wish I was closer to Garden Pizzeria year round!!! If you have the chance, Go, go, go.
