The Thai food in this place sucks. My mom can make better. I have tasted better from other restaurants.

Must’ve been short staffed tonight. My husband and I went there on a Saturday night. Service was lacking and poor! They ran out of the Shrimp Puff appetizers I ordered so I had to order a different impromptu appetizer well after my order was placed AND after my husband recieved his appetizer! My husband’s appetizer and entrée came out before mine. We ate our meals separatey. It was utter confusion, they even brought us someone elses plate! On top of it all, it took them forever to bring the check to us and then we had to flag them down to pick up our payment because they kept scurrying past our table! This experiences was probably one of the mediocre! The food was pretty decent though.

Great little Thai/Malaysian restaurant. Dinner date with my wife, this is our second time here, courteous staff, delicious food. Would have rated higher, but my wifes appetizer was out of stock, her replacement appetizer threw off the timing, my order came out well ahead of hers. We ended up eating about 15 minutes apart. It wasnt crowded tonight either.

Absolutely the WORST Penang I have EVER been to. We have had great experiences at Penang’s in East Hanover, Iselin, and Lodi, so we only expect the same here. Boy, were we wrong. We came in for dinner on a Saturday night. There were ZERO servers in sight. After about 5 mins of standing at the entrance waiting to be seated, I noticed a lady who was dining walking towards the back to signal someone. Then came someone running to the front. She did apologize and seated us. After being seated, we waited another 20 minutes before we saw a man and wife walk in with jackets(I guess they are the owners), so the man takes a walk down our aisle, eyeballs the tables, and decides to take a table next to us that arrived 10 minutes after we did. WTH?! Then 5 minutes afterward, we flagged down the wife to ask if someone could take our order. She took our order without writing a thing down, and walked away. Meanwhile waiting for our food, I could see a lot of the other diners were either complaining of their wait-time, or lack of service, or missing meals. We were beginning to get nervous, so after quite another long wait, we flagged down the wife(again), and asked about whether she had forgotten about us, and she gave us a big attitude. Our appetizer finally arrived. It was good. I was just glad it was still warm. However, the entrees we had ordered were not exactly to par with the standards and taste of the other Penang’s we have visited previously. It lacked taste and quality. The restaurant looked like some sort of warehouse. I think they could do better with the large space they have. They do have a water fountain in the middle of the restaurant. I think they should have saved the money from building that, and hire more service staff to accommodate their guests. OR take some lessons in restaurant management. Worst experience EVER. Will not return again.

Not bad, like some other reviewers mentioned, it’s not the best, but quick, convenient and priced right. I found their Thai curries to be a little off flavor, but not too far. They offer take out too. I will explore the Malaysian side of their menu further.

The food is excellent. One entre could be split between two people, I reccomend the pineapple beef. Staff is great and they have an awesome koi pond.

I had come here a few times after the restaurant first opened and I used to think this place was pretty great. However, the service has definitely gone way downhill, to the point where despite the fact that the food is tasty and there aren’t many comparable restaurants this side of the Delaware River, I’m still hesitant about going back, as I am an impatient person. I still gave three stars because the food is quite excellent. The items that I have tried have all been excellent — beef rendang, pineapple fried rice, roti, some of the various curries and noodle dishes, and especially that black rice pudding! There is also a substantial vegetarian menu — while I am not vegetarian, I have a close friend who is, and it’s always nice to have places we can go where we both have plenty of options. However — the most recent time I went, the service was just on the borderline of being ridiculous. Not only did it take forever to get our food, drink refills, boxes for our leftovers, the check… but they were also out of three different menu items that we had wanted. I’d understand if maybe they just happened to be out of one item, that happens — but three shows a really negative pattern. It makes you wonder how many items on their extensive menu they just don’t bother to make! I’ve never attempted to order take out, but I’m wondering if perhaps that would be a better choice — then you would barely have to endure the painstakingly slow service.

Malaysian food in the HOUZE!, my cousin had his baby’s christening here, and it took us an hour and a half to get here. All good though coz it was well worth it! They decided to do it buffet style. So the Roti Canai(made either to twirl it until the dough becomes a very thin sheet and then folded into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded. This dough is fried and dipped into some type of curry cream sauce with chicken and potatoes ;) it has a little kick to it too. I Must have had 7 of these puppies till it came out of my ears! I also had their chicken with green curry with their special fried rice. It had a different taste to the usual red curry that I get. Overall, the staff was quick to clean up the used up plates that was done. I like that coz it gives me room to get more plates with food. I also tried a porkchop dish with some type of sweet sauce. I liked this as well. The place looks like a fancy lounge with a nice buddha in the middle of the restaurant and a pond with koi fishes floating around ;) They just need to renovate the front of the restaurant. Some paint is falling apart. ;)

Disappointing. Service was subpar, food came out slow,(restaurant was not even at ¼ capacity), food was ok at best. My entrée was the only saving grace. Koi pond was cool.

Cool atmosphere. Love the koi pond and the fountain in the middle of the room. A bit dark, but that’s okay. If you chill easily, you may want to wear a sweater. We usually have pretty good food here, not sure what some others are complaining about — guess my pallet isn’t «refined». Whatever. You have GOT to try the peanut pancake for dessert! It’s warm and gooey and comes with a side of ice-cream. Too decadent. If you don’t like hot/spicy food, make sure you tell your waiter — some of their dishes can get pretty spicy.

I really like Penang, I’ve been to 4 different ones in 2 different states. All generally the same when it comes to taste. What I don’t like about my visit here? The service. It was tough flagging down someone to get a refill. Also, my appetizers came quickly… but there was a 25 minute wait in between to get my main dishes(mango chicken and pad thai). The chef must’ve been having issues in the kitchen. Overall, I probably wouldn’t come back because service was below average and I drove out of my way to get here. The chinatown Penang is usually busy so their table service is very good.

We came here thinking that this place is probably better than food at Cherry Hill Food Court. Yes, it was but not by much. Roti Canai was too thick and doughy. The chicken curry dip was not as tasty as Rangoon or Banana Leaf in Philly. The seafood tom yum soup with noodle had a plenty of ginger flavor but lacked lemon grass and fish sauce flavor. Also it could have used some lime juice. The pad khee mao(thai basil noodle) didn’t have enough basil flavor and didn’t have spicy pepper to adequately flavor the dish. The portions were HUGE though. You could easily split one dish among two people especially you get an appetizer.

Pretty close to the Penang in Chinatown Philly. Cheap, fast, and best of all, VERY close to our new place! We ordered take out on a Sunday night, and they told us 10 minutes. I think it took us longer to get back home than it took for us to get our food. The roti canai was good, though the pancake itself was a little TOO thick for my liking. I don’t like it as crispy as Philly Penang makes it; I need a happy medium between the two! My Hainanese chicken rice was good also, but the chicken-to-rice ratio was way off. I had way more rice than chicken, which I was sad about. Oh well. I didn’t try hubby’s pad thai but he said it was good. Looking forward to eating here next time!

Penang used to be the place to go for Malaysian food. Then they expanded out into the New Jersey suburbs and some mediocrity set in. And now, they have formidable competition in Philadelphia and New York City. Even so, these restaurants tend to be decent choices when you’re in New Jersey. The first thing I noticed in this restaurant was the décor. They really went overboard here. Stone fountain, bronze goddess, Chinese carp in the pool. There is quite a lot of seating too, although I do not know how busy this place is at peak hours. I was there some time between lunch and dinner, and there were only a few customers. It’s a comfortable place. The food was good enough. The service was just fine. So I’d say this restaurant is worth a try if you’re in town.

So I pass this tucked-away little place every day as I travel to and from work. I’ve yet to find a good Thai place around here, so I was excited to stumble upon one that looked so promising and was a quick drive from our apartment. When my fiancé asked me where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner, I decided that we should take a chance on this place. At first, I wasn’t sure if I made the right decision, mostly prompted by my fiancé’s observation that«there are an awful lot of Lexuses in this parking lot; do you think we can afford this?» And walking into the actual restaurant didn’t help: The minimalistic décor(accented by the utterly delightful pond and fountain in the middle of the dining area, both of which we had the pleasure of sitting next to, as well as the welcoming array of pillows scattered along the booth seats) was achingly hip without being pretentious, and the über-high ceiling gave the whole place such a great, open vibe. The fact that diners are space so widely apart only adds to the comfortable roominess of a terrifically welcoming dining space. Every employee we encountered was a friendly delight. The hostess, smiling warmly all the while, gave us a crash-course on the restaurant when we told her that it was our first time as Penang patrons; our waiter was prompt and courteous; other servers sporadically stopped by when they saw that our water glasses were less than half full. And the food! The inexpensive pricing of the menu items had us a little wary at first — we were wondering if we’d be paying for what we got, but one bite of our appetizers was more than enough to dispel that myth all but immediately. By the time my chicken pad thai arrived, I was half-stuffed with some of the tastiest pre-meal fare I’ve had in ages(but that meant there’d be leftovers of my delicious dinner, so all was well). But, like all victims of the insatiable sweet tooth, I couldn’t say no to dessert, especially once I noticed there was fried ice cream on the menu. I hadn’t had fried ice cream in years, so that was an unexpected(and deeply satisfying) treat I can’t wait to enjoy again. There are many more trips to Penang in my future, and that thought excites my inner fat kid more than anything else in the world. This place is a trifecta of superior food, superior service and a killer atmosphere.

This was recommended by my sis and the recommendation was spot on. She was raving about the Roti and it was really goooood. The texture of the pancake was something else. I can eat it without the curry. ;) In addition to the Roti, we ordered Penang Satay, Thai Pineapple Fried Rice, Mango Shrimp, Mango Juice and Ice Kacang. Their meals are inexpensive, flavorful and authentic. I was just a lil disappointed about my Mango juice as they advertised it as fresh… but really it’s from the can.

Whoa. This place is AWESOME! You can tell that the building used to be a shoe store, but Penang owners did a great job of redecorating. It’s very calming inside and I love the waterfall right in the middle of the restaurant. By the looks of the place when walking in, you’d think you were in for a piggy bank breaking meal, but surprisingly, it’s VERY reasonable. Almost cheap! We had bacon wrapped shrimp that were fried. SOGOOD. And the roti with curry sauce. Here, they put one piece each of potatoe, carrot and chicken in the bowl with the curry sauce. And the roti is SOGOOD. For only $ 3. If you were on a budget, you could order this dish only and have a really good, cheap snack. For entrée I had the beef rendeng. Wow. Hugh portion and the coconut rice was a nice addition. All for $ 7. Thai iced tea is also really good. I’ll definitely be back here. No doubt.
