I’m fond of saying, «Anyplace is romantic if you’re with the right person.» Well, Mason Square Bed & Breakfast set us up for a challenge. The pluses: good bed, availability, price. The negatives: Dirty: well, despite what I read about cleanliness, it is NOT clean. I wasn’t able to post a photo of the stained carpet, unfortunately. Moreover, the carpet wasn’t even vacuumed! I looked for a vacuum because I would have done it myself. I was very glad I brought flip-flops. Size: the room is very small, without any«entrance» or vestibule. You’re just … there. No windows, except for the transom. Which has its charm, I suppose, but that allows light from the hallway into the room. Furnishings: Antique? Well, it’s all old stuff. Nothing particularly charming or winsome. There’s no comfortable place to sit and read, for example. And since there is nothing to do in Mason in the evening… and there is no television in the room… it’s just sort of depressing in there. Linens: Skimpy and thin as thin can be. They warn you to use wipes to remove makeup or you will be charged extra for laundering the linens. Insulting. They are worse than Motel 6 Quality. Sitting area: there is a television, and it’s old-school and dinky with bad resolution. You have to sit very close to it to see anything. I’m not kidding. The porch: there is a bench. It is rotten. The handle fell off and it collapsed as someone tried to sit on it. Yes, really. Location: While the rooms are quiet inside the building, the location on the square means you get a lot of action from the oversized truck loads that careen through town. Before we left, we watched as a truck driver had to rotate a street sign to make the turn. I suppose that was exciting in its way.(Not really.) WiFi: Seems to accommodate only one person at a time??? Finally: this is not a B&B unless you are a child below the age of 10. There are individual boxes of sugary cereal(think Froot Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Cocoa Krispies, Frosted Flakes), instant oatmeal, sugary grain bars. Snacks include mini Oreos and mini Chips Ahoy. They provide milk and orange juice, coffee and tea. The coffee tasted stale. Quite. Depressing. In short, I’d definitely pay more for better. I stand by my saying, but prefer not to be put to this much of a test.

This is a perfect little B & B right on the square in Mason. We were able to call that afternoon and get it for that night(Thursday) for under $ 100. It has 3 bedrooms all keyed and rented separately. There is a common area with coffee and light snacks. A balcony that looks into the square. Great restaurants and shopping all in walking distance. There is also a winery just around the corner, Sandstone Cellars. It’s the reason that we come to Mason. The room was very clean and nicely decorated. You must be able to climb a flight of stairs to get to it. I only mention it because I have a handicapped family member and am always thinking about accommodations if she is traveling with us. We will definitely be staying again.
