Knowledgeable consumers of Indian food realize that there are multiple culinary traditions on the subcontinent. In the typical American Indian restaurant, most of those foods will be from the North Indian tradition, which goes back to the Mughals, and differs substantially from the approaches favored elsewhere. Mayuri offers a combination of North and South Indian approaches. THe main things to be known about the South of India is that the food tends to be spicier and that tamarind is commonly used to ‘sour” the sauces and flavors. I’ve been going to Mayuri at least twice per month for many years. It has never failed to offer superb taste and a variety of flavors. They also have a distinctive and tasty masala chai to drink. You can eat from the buffet or order from the menu(which I do when I am there for goat or something out of the ordinary buffet offering. You can bring your own wine if you wish as well. I highly recommend the buffet if you want an introduction to this style of Indian food. Try a selection of the lentil, vegetable and meat dishes. You can add spices and raita(yogurt0 from the spice tray at the front of the buffet line as you see fit. Mayuri is the place to go if you want to experience a real and high quality variety of Indian food in the Memphis area.

I was extremely impressed with the lunch buffet here. I took my mom, who is from the Bay Area where there are many great Indian restaurants. This was by far the best Indian food I’ve eaten in years. The food was well seasoned and spicy, though robust and delicate in flavor. Each dish had a distinct flavor that exploded in my mouth, and it was not too salty. The flavors of the meat and vegetables were not overpowered by the spices and heat, which is a difficult balance to achieve. There was a smoky flavor to the dishes too, especially the dal, which gave the food a nutty flavor(tasted like pan-roasted cumin seeds). I am more familiar with North Indian food, so I enjoyed trying the South Indian dishes that were new to me. The waitstaff were accommodating and friendly, and the large dining room was filled with beautiful art. I enjoyed the classical shenai music they were playing too. Everything about the experience made me feel like I was dining in the home of a close friend. Best Indian food in Memphis!

Awesome awesome place! Food was so great, I had the fried okra dinner and it was so good I ate the whole thing. Which is really something because the portion was huge. Only reason it’s not five stars is because the servers were not very observant of drinks or checking back to see if everything was okay

Went for dinner here for the second time in a week. Delicious chola bhatura and Andhra masala dosa, which is basically a Pesarattu with masala and sambhar. Coconut chutney is delicious as are their pappadums. Channa bhatura came with raw onion, and a lemon wedge. Pure tastes, no masala in excess or overkill. You feel happily satiated after eating not stuffed. Happily full. Everything tastes home cooked. There is no excessive oil. Spice levels and are good too. Going to have goat next time! Lassi is delicious! Gulab jamun is awesome too. It’s like eating at home. Second time ordering gulab jamun. The chefs are the women of the family, so looks like it’s a family business! The pride shows in their food, and their décor, but 100% in their flavors which shine on every dish!

Hands down, the best Indian food we have ever had! We have been visiting Mayuri since 2008 and now bring our children along as well. The waitstaff are very friendly and the buffet extensive. While other restaurant buffets have the small selection of just chicken curry and dal, Mayuri always has a huge selection with chicken makhani, lamb keema, chana masala, fresh naan, Rasam soup, basmati rice, tandoori chicken, mushroom masala, masala dosas, as well as housemade raita and a selection of chutneys including tomato and mint. The buffet can change up a bit so I’d recommend calling ahead to see if your favorite is on that day. The weekend buffet also usually includes the ever famous chicken tikka masala. The a la carte menu is just as delicious and fresh. We have tried the other Indian restaurants in Memphis as well, and while they all have their strengths, you just can’t beat the food and variety at Mayuri.

Not worth. You will find better quality in other Indian restaurants. Quality is very poor.

We ordered a la carte instead of eating the buffet. Very generous portions of rice, nan, and tandoori chicken! I had a party of three, and we ordered family style, sharing the dishes among us. We took home as much as we ate! The tandoori chicken is quite spicy with an excellent flavor and very tender meat. We also ate a lamb curry and a chicken curry. Both were excellent. The samosas were served with three different sauces that were fun to try. Service was laid back but friendly and responsive. I typically eat Indian at Bombay House on Germantown. I prefer the rice at Bombay, but the curries at Mayuri are equally as good. The tandoori chicken is much better(spicier, more tender, larger portions) than that of Bombay. In all, this restaurant has become a strong contender for my favorite Indian restaurant.

We have been going to Mayuri for over 8 years. The owners are very friendly and we love the food. We’re not the biggest fans of buffets so we typically avoid the buffet but I highly recommend ordering a la carte. Our favorite dishes are the Chana Masala and the Chicken Tikka Masala.

This is the best Indian food in Memphis. Hu now have a buffet at dinner. Try the Mayuri fish. Just great. The only thing I don’t like is bread is not hot.

This place has good quality food and decent ambience and décor compared to Curry Bowl. There weren’t too many items on the Dinner buffet on sunday. I believe this is the only Indian restaurant in Memphis and surrounding area that serves Dinner buffet on Saturday and Sunday. The Chicken Tikka Masala was made right and delicious. Gulab Jamun(Spongy milky balls soaked in Rose scented syrup) is an Indian desert and it was tasty and not too sweet. Definitely returning soon. I took 1 star off as they didn’t has Chicken Biryani(Flavored rice).

Love their lunch buffet! They open at 11:00 on the Sunday I went and there was already a line so that shows how popular and good it is. I have to say I believe it is the best indian buffet that I have been to. I like the fact that you can try different types of food instead of being stuck with just one for that meal. My friend had never tried indian before and she was sold after having it!

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Memphis! Every time I’ve been, the service is excellent, the food is hot and delicious, and the employees are always very accommodating when I ask them ignorant questions about the food. It’s also very clean. Much rather go here than any of the other Indian restaurants around town – even for the drive.

I’ve had plenty of Indian, even from the hands of my own friend’s mother, so I was sorely disappointed by going here. The food was lukewarm or even cold, amazingly not even a minute after being set out. Some dishes were bland or mildly flavored even though I know how it’s supposed to taste. The bread halwa was far too sweet and the kheer was so bland, it was basically milk and rice with a pinch of sugar. There were a few good things, mainly the fruit salad and mango lassi, but that’s it. I won’t bother coming back whenever I visit Memphis. Not surprisingly, when I searched reviews for this place, many of the negative reviews came from Indian people themselves.

This food was so good. We started off with somosas, which were huge. There were many veggie options. I got the eggplant curry and it was wonderful. The portions were large, plenty of leftovers. Very satisfied with my meal.

This place is the place all my Indian friends love the best. So it gets that stamp of authenticity and approval. The workers here are very friendly and the owner is pretty cool as well. They list their food entries as either a la carte or dinner. Get the dinner, it’s only $ 2 more and it comes with a bunch of little side stuff(see my picture) like Rasam, Sambar, Raita, Special Curry, and Spinach Dal Curry. I’m not sure if they do the same stuff for each dinner plate or if it changes by day/dish but it’s pretty awesome. I went back with a neighbor and her parents to try the buffet and I kept up with my list! I’ve talked to the owner before and some friends and this buffet doesn’t serve what we expect because it’s from a different region(or something of that nature). Interestingly enough there wasn’t any plain basmati rice, though there was white rice. The Tandoori Chicken is also good here and I intend to get my own plate one day(I tasted my friends and the buffet so far). I didn’t like the Lamb Curry until I mixed in the Raita because the lamb tasted too much like goat to me and the spices on the meat were just not working for me. But the Raita balanced it all out. I love the Chicken Tikki Masala here. Love: — Chef’s Special Curry(not on the menu) — Chicken Makhari(try spicy) — Chicken Tikki Masala — Curd Rice — Paneer Tikka Masala — Ravvakesari — Spinach Dal Curry — Spinach Pakora — Tandoori Chicken Ok: — Chicken Biryani — Fried Cabbage — Lamb Curry(when combos with Raita) — Rice Kheer(could be sweeter) — Raita — Sambar Soup — Spinach Dal Curry — Vangi Bath Dislike: — Chicken Saag — Great Vidaloo — Mango Fruits — Mushroom Matter — Rasam Soup(sharp taste)

Party of 5 on satuday afternoon. One in our party was Indian and mayuri had previously catered one of his wedding events last year. We were able to bring in a couple bottles of wine which they opened and poured for us. The buffet looked pretty good so I went for that. Everyone else ordered from the menu. Tons of food… Excellent food. I won’t go into extensive detail as to what we had, but it was quite authentic and full of flavor. Good heat on many dishes but nothing excessive. One thing is service was hit or miss… We had to go get our own menus for example. Had to ask 3x for our check. The décor is haphazard with dusty surfaces, crooked wall hangings, etc. My Indian friend informed me this is typical… That many Indians excel at the food but lack in the other business aspects of the restaurant. It was HOT inside as well… Overall it was quite good and we will be back. There was some pushback when we asked about splitting the check so we handed that ourselves.

This was a little out of my element, however we were with good friends who knew the drill. The place was a little lackluster and the service left quite a bit to desire, but the food was solid. We ordered Chicken 65(boneless chicken sautéed with yogurt and spices) and Aloo Gobi(potatoes and cauliflower with spices.) They were served with long grain white rice and an assortment of condiments. I went with the yogurt as a topping for the chicken and ate the veggies as they were served. It was all very tasty and the yogurt tempers the heat of the spice leaving behind a lot of flavor. All in all, if you’re good with heat you’ll be fine. A friend ordered a salad and cauliflower dish with no heat and her dish turned out to be spicier than our standard dishes. I would suggest sampling from the buffet if you’re new to the cuisine and seeing what works for you. This is an interesting place. Just keep your service and ambiance expectations to a minimum and enjoy the food!

Authentic and delicious. A little on the pricey side, but well worth it. Everything at the buffet is fresh and tasty. Free chai with your buffet, as well. Definitely check this place out if you’ve got a hankering for great Indian cuisine.

I was very impressed with Mayuri. Their buffet has a great variety and is perfect for sampling authentic Indian food. I enjoyed everything that I tried. The only thing on the buffet that I had tried before was the tandoori chicken. Here are some of my favorites: Spinach Pakora(think onion ring minus the ring. Fried onion with spinach and spices.) Chicken Saag(Chicken cooked in a cream sauce not unlike Chicken curry but no spice) Lamb Curry(Delicious and spicy) Mushroom Masala(VERY good. Mushrooms in a spicy cream sauce) I was very impressed with the variety but not so much with the price. Their dinner buffet is $ 11.95 which seems steep. They do rotate their dishes so they may not have what you had the last time you were there. This is good for variety but bad if you’re craving something particular. Definitely go try this place and bring some friends for a cool way to sample ethnic food!
