Went in for a light lunch after a hike and this place was awesome! Very old-school diner layout with a bar and booths. Food was cheap and perfect for what we were looking for. We had both gotten Panini’s which are made fresh to order and the onion rings definitely tasted home-made. Excellent little breakfast/lunch spot off the main strip.

I had to accompany someone to a doctor’s appointment in the area and we decided to visit a classic Jersey diner as long as we were in the state. Ray’s is located on a cute tree lined street surrounded by other small businesses(the Pie Store is also a 4 minute drive away). It’s a tiny place with a big heart, everyone who walked in seemed to know the staff. We ordered two burgers with bacon, pepperjack, jalapeño sauce, and caramelized onions with fries and onion rings. The burgers were amazing. You can’t get diner food like this in NY. Perfectly moist meat, top notch toppings, crispy but not burnt bacon. We pretty much licked our plates. The best part of our meal had to be the service though. Our waitress was super sweet and friendly! And in a really genuine way. Her uncle cooks in the back(I love that it’s a family business). She made us feel right at home :)

Great food, very affordable, the waiting time for the food to be served is not bad and great customer service! I dont think there’s any other breakfast place in montclair that’s better than this place!

Had breakfast at Ray’s this morning for the first time in about 2 years. The food was as good as I remembered and I will definitely be back. The service was also top-notch.

The best Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese Sandwich I’ve ever had! Everything we ate was delicious! Try the gravy fries with mozzarella cheese, the cheesesteak wrap with the chipotle sauce and the grilled cheese with bacon, avocado and tomato. So happy to see my late Uncle Ray’s creation still doing so well and serving up tasty food with that family atmosphere that makes you feel so welcome from the first time you step into the door. I’ll be stopping by for breakfast and lunch each time I’m back in town!

I was really debating what grade to give middle or a little bit better than middle. This is a tough one for me. Clearly, I went down a grade. The experience was good, the food was good, the service was good. The omelet was good. Nothing jumped out at me to say great or outstanding, just good.

This place is a neighborhood GEM!!! Everyone is treated the same from your first time here or your hundredth! I have had the grilled chicken salad and the deluxe turkey burger both were awesome!!! I could have asked for anything better. And the chocolate cake is to die for! If you live work or just in the area stop by.

I’m from NY and came for a visit and ate at Ray’s. It was a great experience. The manager Angelica is a total sweetheart. No one makes caramelized onions like Ray’s. It went perfect on the«Freddy Fred» burger, which was delicious by the way. Not to mention that the french fries were perfect, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. Two thumbs up!

I came in and ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings based on the strength of these Unilocal reviews. It was really not good. The burger meat had some fat in it and the onion rings were the really cheap frozen variety that barely have any onion in them. The whole meal lacked flavor but the wait staff was nice. 10 minimum to use a card.

An old school hole in wall luncheonette that is simply marvelous. Ray’s is a no frills old world diner with remarkable food. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed. I recently ventured into Ray’s for breakfast; and I must say I had the best Taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwich of my life. The sandwich was warm, salty, and covered in cheese! The bagel that it was on was fresh and toasted to a crispy perfection. I also ordered some corn beef hash, which was amazing. The hash had the right amount of corned beef, onions and potatoes. Finally, Ray’s has the best coffee in NJ… I know a bold statement, but I stand by it! Ray’s itself is super tiny. However, what Ray’s lacks in size it makes up in quality of food and service. The servers are kind and super efficient. Also, they are superstars when it comes to topping off your mug of coffee. You won’t be disappointed with Ray’s

I decided to stop in for a quick breakfast before jumping on the train to work. Egg bacon and jalapeño wrap did not disappoint, service was attentive and I was more than on time for the train. I’m looking forward to trying some more breakfast food at Rays on a lazier morning.

Ray is gone but his spirit lives on. Excellent job on NJ’s signature breakfast sandwich – taylor ham, egg and cheese.

I love a local place, especially for breakfast. So this place has won me over. I sat at the counter and had a nice cuppa and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Nothing fancy, and it was just right. There were a handful of locals sitting at the counter, and all were friendly and willing to chat. The staff was friendly and attentive. the décor is the same as it was for the original Ray — I am guessing it hasn’t changed since the ‘70s. Did not see a single person with their face buried in an iPhone. Nice!

This place is a small, old school style luncheonette. We have tried a bunch of other brunch places in Montclair and were looking for a no-frills breakfast on our lazy Anniversary Saturday. The service is good, the prices are lower than the trendier spots on Walnut St. and the keep they place well cleaned. Come here if you’re looking for eggs, pancakes or something similar.

I like rays a lot. Its like a very professionally run upscale diner. There really arent many other breakfast and lunch choices around montclair where i am so certain i will leave happy. The service is good and the food is what it should be. They are very pleasant.

So it was Saturday morning and my boyfriend & I were looking for a nice little café. I just recently moved to Montclair and Ray’s Luncheonette turned out to be walking distance from my new place. The place itself was crowded(all the seats inside were taken) so we had to sit outside(there are only two small tables outside). The waitresses took forever to take our orders(a longer wait than usual). The food itself was pretty good — I ordered a turkey and cheese omelette with toast. I’d say it’s a good breakfast spot if you live in the area.

Ray’s is a classic luncheonette with decent food served fast and hot. Though not under the original ownership of Ray since shortly after his passing, the new owners nevertheless stay true to the menu, style and customer expectations, and have as well put their own stamp on Ray’s with a welcome touch of latin flare. If you’re looking for classic breakfast and lunch fare with no fussiness or over-complication, served by friendly staff in a cozy neighbourhood atmosphere, Ray’s is THE place.
