A-1 closed?! Many of the pizza pros in New Haven never enjoyed it, but for the hours, location, and pleasant workers that knew me after some point … I can’t believe they are gone. Had to keep it simple here with just good solid cheese pizza when drunk. That was it. Also they had cigarettes too at a reasonable price that you couldn’t find elsewhere. Good times. Good thing I quit. Anyways, goodbye drunk pizza nights.

I only stopped here quickly as we were passing through new haven, but it was good for a quick bite. Vegetarians should try the veggie pizza.

I know A-1 has a lot of different foods, but I’ve only had the pizza and looking at all of the other reviews, it’s possible I need to try something else there and then write a review update. The thought has never really crossed my mind though because in the scene of delicious New Haven food, especially pizza, A-1 fails to impress. The pizza is really only good for late night food. It’s greasy and a bit bland, and the crust can sometimes be soggy. But hey, it’s open 24⁄7 so if you’re hungry late at night when all of the other pizza places are closed, A-1 has got you covered.

It’s a little dive place on Broadway, and it wasn’t bad. Not the best, but more reasonably priced, and the 24 hour thing is pretty good. I had lunch here the other day — my friend had a cheeseburger and I had a turkey club. The server was attentive without being overbearing, and the place was empty, so we were able to have a good conversation. I can imagine that it gets louder late at night, though. The food came out relatively quickly, and while the sandwich was fine, it was the abundance of fries that really struck me. The sandwich triangles seemed to be smaller than normal, and the fries looked like they were trying to cover it up. At least the $ 8 club came with fries and a pickle… If you’re desperate for a meal late at night, this is your place. Don’t expect too much, but it’s good for what it is.

I have eaten here a total of three times since I moved to the New Haven area in the fall. First up, a slice of cheese pizza. It isn’t the best pizza I have ever eaten but definitely worth 2.75. Add a side of fries and you have yourself the perfect lunch during a long day of shopping on Broadway. The hot chocolate is very good. I am a fan of instant cocoa but the hot chocolate at A-One was very satisfying. Another quality about this pizzeria is that it stays open 24⁄7. When you find yourself downtown late at night before grabbing the bus back it is nice grabbing a quick bite to eat! Atmosphere: The pizzeria does offer seating but the area is small which is nice. You don’t have to worry about a lot of noise and it creates a more intimate setting. They have two tables that can seat four people each. I have gone with five people including myself; we pulled up a chair.

Good solid diner food available 24 hours a day. I like the breakfast better than the pizza but the pizza is pretty solid too. I think it’s better than Frank’s Pepe and all those other pizza places that get all the notice in the city of New Haven. The seating is a little challenging if it’s busy, but it’s really a good place if you need a quick bite and everything else is closed. Decent service and good food.

Acceptable food and service. It’s a diner that’s open 24 hours on Broadway. I’ve typically go there late at night after partying or if I really have a fix for diner food. Kind of small place, though. Not somewhere you’d go with a bunch of people for a social outing. The vibe I get when I go there is, «OHMISOOOHUNGRAY… WHYNOFOOD? NEEDFOODINFACEWOAHAHHHHHH» So, if it’s 4am and you are mad hungry and too damn tired to fix yourself something, then this is your spot!

After reading about the raves for New Haven’s Apizza, I tried it and was left with a bad taste in my mouth(literally). OK, I get it, pizza around here isn’t great or cheap. Now where do I find a simple slice? I was walking around Broadway and this was the closest pizzeria to me. I went inside and ordered a couple of pepperoni slices… mediocre at best, but at least 1) the prices weren’t marked up, and 2) it actually resembled a real pizza slice, sorta. Greasy, small slices… but pizza nonetheless. The place is supposed to be open late, so I can see myself coming here more often in the fall.

What can be said about A-1 that hasn’t already been said of a business whose Unilocal profile says«CLOSED», or a hospital cafeteria, or a dodgy back alley. And yet, and yet… when the time is right(and all Yale students know what I’m talking about), you’ll find yourself ducking in from the snow and cramped back in A-1 despite all your better angels. Just live with it. And get out quickly.

Scammers on Broadway Driving through Connecticut we stopped at A-1 for pizza. It came to $ 5.13 and gave them a $ 10. It was a brand new ten dollar bill and with the red on it. He wanted to know if we had .13 cents so we dug for it and gave it to him. He gave us the pizza and wanted to know where are change was. He argue with us that we only gave him a 5. He held up the five that we supposedly gave him. It was and old 5 dollar bill and was wadded up and wrinkled. Our $ 10 was new with the red on it and was mint fresh. So they got a $ 5 tip for pizza that was not great. Beware when you go there or better yet just don’t go there.

I’d give A-One an A+. Get it? You are jealous, I know. Anyway, I didn’t have the pizza, but I saw the pizza, and it looked delicious. Their menu was extensive and appealing. They serve lots more then just pizza — breakfast(I’m always a fan of places that serve breakfast all day), sandwiches, turkey, etc. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with mushrooms, ham and a side of GRAVY fries. Absolutely delicious! I have to admit there were not a lot of options in New Haven so I can’t judge it against other places in the area, but I’d be hard pressed to think there are many restaurants with a better selection of food than A-One. Whether you are in New Haven or San Francisco — it’s still a good choice.
