2ND Time Around

For a city girl looking for great finds and fare prices — 2^nd time around Thompson is great. But for fashion girls who would like to consign, beware. I have never had such an issue chasing down paychecks. The money is decent, but be prepared to receive payment months after promised and to receive little support from the boutique sales team. Truthfully, if you don’t call multiple times to remind them your payment is due, you most likely will be forgotten. Sad, because I do love shopping for gems in the shop.

If you’re black and carry shopping bags from other stores, store associates automatically assume you’re going to steal.
I was enjoying my birthday with my girlfriend in the city and she wanted to make a quick stop to look for a dress for my party. I regret ever walking into that store on my birthday because it messed up my whole day.
I’ve spent years working in retail, I know when people are watching me. I was seating on the bench by the shoes while my girlfriend picked out a few dresses to try on. But as soon as she finish trying on a dress, they would take it from her before she even makes up her mind, I noticed the sales associate checking it to see if the censors were still on the dress. And at the same time I caught a sales associate creeping around slowly to see if I was putting anything in my bag which had my extremely expensive birthday gift. I’ve heard people say they’ve been followed in stores but that was my first time, it reminded me that no matter how far you get in life, how much money you have, how well dressed you are, all it takes is a few small minded individuals to remind you that you’re just another Black person living in America. this happened on Oct 24^th, 2015, I waited for my head to cool off and talked to a few people just to be sure that I wasn’t crazy. First, I was going to write the office in Boston but I feared that it would just be swept under the rug with a «We’re deeply sorry» letter and nothing would be done.

Walked in during a grand-​opening of sorts, some kind of celebration because there was bubbly! wohoo! I had water but still, I can party it up with H2O.
I was expecting to just check out the place, but who am I kidding, had to try on a piece or two, more like 8 pieces but that is not the point! Found a marvelous dress here for one tiny fraction of the retail cost. Forget that it is branded with a label, the craft of it is amazzzing! A lady was trying to hustle her way into getting a very fancy purse and the cashier was super calm about the ordeal.
I am slightly uncomfortable with all the negative reviews this chain has, specially for their other locations. I have not tried selling /​consigning here, and with those scary reviews I won’t be. The shopping experience was fun that day but I can’t say Im eager to come back if so many people are feeling ripped off.

This is my favorite second time around store! The employees are always super helpful and always take the time to meet your needs! They have the best bag and shoe selection around for consignment and every time I pop in the staff makes it a point to show me what’s new!

I’ve been regularly consigning with second time around for years now. I used to have a pretty good sell, through rate, and recently, that’s dropped significantly. Not sure what happened, but I’ve discovered other stores and avenues (tradesy) that have better success and a better payout.
Also — something recently left a bad taste in my mouth. They happened to sell a sweater of mine past the consigment period, left out on the floor. They did not give me any of the sale proceeds, claiming that the item was now theirs. I never had payment withheld before when an item sold past a consignment date. I think the proper thing would have been to pull the items that had expired and let customers know that they have a certain amount of time to pick up. Most other consignment stores do this.

They constantly lose a majority of the items I consign. You cannot lose people’s items and then not pay them for it and say «we are not responsible». It’s just bad form any way you spin it. I will never take my chances there again, there are so many other stores that respect their customers and take responsibility for stolen or lost items.

It’s a small store, but the selection is really carefully cultivated. The salespeople here are also friendly, which isn’t always the case in soho stores!

I only can review as a seller and I can 100% say it is not worth consigning here.
I’ve consigned at other shops and I’ve sold on ebay and those options are far better financially and process wise, than this setup. I walked away from this experience underselling my items and getting shortchanged. Overall, I could of donated all my items and at least would of felt good about it!
The shop clerks are very indifferent. One last item sold before my items expired and is listed on my online account but their in store books say it sold after and pretty much tough luck for me. They will not pay me for the item even though it did sell and is listed on my account as sold. When items expire, it becomes the stores or gets donated. So if this were the case, why was this item recorded as sold on my account but the other leftovers are not updated as donated or sold after expiration as well? I also called to pick up my items after expiring and without even looking up my account, I was told they were all donated. So how could of this sold if it was donated? Overall, the customer service is just too unconcerned for my taste. So unhelpful.
I will not be returning to this shop as a buyer or seller.

This store is simply amazing ever since they revamped there consignment team. A lady by the name of Jessica G was so amazing and informed on value and the workmanship of the clothes they have at there location. I will come back to consign asap.

I would not recommend consigning with them. Staff was uninformed„ extremely pushy, unprofessional and rude. Way overpriced my item, in what I figured was an effort to get me to leave my item there instead of bringing it elsewhere. Ultimately, the store lost $ 800 in profit over a salemate of $ 100 in price, of which I would have been willing to split ⁵⁰⁄₅₀. Don’t waste your time leaving your stuff with them. There are too many other amazing shops to deal with (including another one 2 doors down).

I like the Second Time Around brand. They are a bit cheaper than other local consignment stores. There customer service isn’t the greatest however. I purchased a leather bag from this location, at a decent price. It was styled nicely, but as soon as I actually put something in the bag, the handle broke. I think it was just tucked for display. This makes me suspect that they don’t properly inspect things during the intake process. ‘Used’ doesn’t always been broken at a consignment store, and I hate getting things repaired, especially when they weren’t discounted for this reason.
The gentleman that helped was adorable however. He was super helpful, and sweet.

I came here during the 70% off Summer clearance. What a delight! I think that STA is a little bit expensive during its non-​70% off days (cheapest item would be $ 20, and that’s getting lucky), so I was really excited to see prices come down during their sale. Lacoste polos for $ 7.50, uh hello?! (unfortunately they were too short for me).
STA usually carries a lot of nice brands — See by Chloe, a lot of Prada shoes, BCBG, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Pour La Victoire, some Gucci shoes, Milly, etc. It all depends on who’s bringing in the stuff since this is consignment, but this is what I saw during my trip there.
Pre-​sale prices, expect the high end stuff (Chloe, Chanel, Prada, etc.) to be in the low to mid 100’s (shoes can be up to $ 200). STA has this policy where they discount their prices by 10%, 20%, etc. based on the color of their stickers, so check for those when it’s not 70%-off sale time.
Staff are nice but not overly pushy. They usually leave you alone and don’t pressure you to buy.
I scored a super cute pair of satin flats (Pour La Victoire) for about $ 22 during this trip. Success. I will come back when they have these mega sales.

On the buyers side it is worth it however on the selling side it is deplorable at best. To have buyers you need sellers and the people that consign to STA are running for the hills. In fact a lot of the pieces in the store are not consigned, they are bought in bulk from various distributors for pennies per pound.
For the buyer every 2 weeks an item is there it drops in price so after 2 months an item can be had for 60 percent off, this does not favor the seller. There are a few good stores in the area that do not drop their prices and if they do not sell it they return it to you.
For a consignor all you get is 40 pct of the sale price and you have to wait quarterly (3 months) to get paid. Yes, you get your money 4x a year? Pathetic right? The reason this place does this is to hope the consignor forgets about their stuff or moves out, this practice is adapted by many consignment stores across the country not just STA.
Items are priced too low from the start and people know the prices drop every 2 weeks and rarely buy it when it comes out. Another downer to the store is the sales people who take stuff in lack knowledge in authenticating items. Often at STA there are numerous fake items for sale.
You will notice that 5 star ratings come from buyers and 1 stars come from sellers. STA has gotten so many complaints from consignors that they now have removed their corporate phone number from being found online. If you call a STA store and ask for the number they will not give it to you and site «I will get fired if I give it out». You can email STA all you want and that makes sense, you can ignore emails but you can’t ignore phone calls.
In reality STA is like an eBay store except they don’t sell online. They will be out of business before you know it. Consider the facts above and make your own determination.

I come here every now and then to find some nice clothes at great prices and I’m never disappointed. I always find something nice and the staff here is cool also. So far so good.

I cannot get over what great brands Second Time Around has! I’ve also been to the other stores on Mott St. and Lexington Ave and have been impressed. I recently purchased a pair of Rachel Roy pinstripe pants for $ 25! They were originally marked $ 89 but were 70% off.
Some of the other brands they had that I loved were: Ferragamo, Milly, D&G, Chanel, Lilly Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren etc. In fact I just dropped off a bunch of items and they were accurate and even slightly lower than 25−30% of the original price. For example I dropped off a bright pink BCBG gown that was $ 300 and they priced it at $ 69. I probably only wore it 3 – 4 times and it was practically mint condition. Also, Tory Burch flats that were $ 250 were priced at $ 89…So, people who shop here definitely get a good steal!
I will be back and I will be telling my friends!

do not consign here. 40% is what you get so basically in the end you get barely nothing and they lose stuff. Also, they dont price things properly with enough research. They ended up selling my coat for $ 30 and the orginal price for it was $ 398. That means i got $ 12 for it. Doesn’t add up and is not worth it. There are many other places where you can sell stuff. Guess its worth a good look though to buy. Because someone lucked out with my coat.

What a good counterpart to INA, where I regularly lust after clothes that, while on consignment, are still very expensive. Second Time Around has cute tops and skirts in the $ 18-​$ 30 price range – a hard thing to find in my neighborhood. I stopped in here over the weekend and picked up some work clothes that are barely used and very affordable. I’ll be a regular at Second Time Around.
