«‘Ohana» means«family.» «Family» means«no one gets left behind.» «Lakay» means home. You never go hungry at home. I was in the area touring on foot. Enjoying the naked trees that pass. In Florida, seasons are kinda a fairytale. I walked right pass this place but my nose made me stop. It really was like that moment in Ratatouille. Crazy flashbacks of my family in Leogane, Haiti calling children in from playing to eat played on a screen in my mind. I really thought I was tripping. I walk back and I see this see of green that leads me through the doors. I walk in and greeted by one of the owners daughters. I quickly looked over the bright yellow menu and the first thing that hit my tastes buds was the spageti(spaghetti). I placed the order then took a seat at the window. Quickly the young girl brought over my papaya milkshake as I continued to people watch. Funny thing, I kept seeing people do exactly what I didn’t walk pass the place, do a you turn and walk straight to the desk. LOL. It was a cold afternoon and heaters were blowing hard. I would have loved if they closed the door, but the open door seemed to be bringing in plenty of people. Lakay food does not taste like restaurant food. I really tastes like home. Perfect amount of salt, just the right seasonings(bon paste tomat), huge portions, and beautiful presentation. I took pics of my plate and posted on IG and Facebook just to gloat. I then put my phone down and tried to dig in with both hands. When I thought I had enough I still had over half of the plate left. Lakay food also makes great left overs. When I went up to pay I asked about other Haitian dishs. That;s when I learned there was a whole backside of the menu that I never viewed. In addition, they plan to have special menu items weekly. When I walked out with my heavy to go place, I finally see the bright blue sign over the restaurant. And I felt at home. This place is definitely worth a try.

Where do I start? This place is amazing. This is food that touches the soul. I’ve been here 3 times already and it’s as if everytime I go it gets better. This is a brand new business and I want them to prosper! The first time I went in the cashier was so friendly, she was from Pananma and she suggested I start with the chicken stew with brown rice, ITWASDELICIOUS! I can’t explaint how home cooked it felt, it was like Grandmas chicken and rice. I had a Passion Fruit Juice which was a little on the sweet side so I asked her to water it down and it was PERFECT. The cook came out and I complimented her and wished her success. This place is awesome and I’m looking forward to going here more often :)

The food here tastes like home. If you enjoy Spanish food, Caribbean food is similar with less seafood, and more beef and chicken. I ordered the Caribbean jerk chicken dinner plate which comes with rice and beans, salad, and fried plantain. It also comes with a side of orange pepper which is a decent companion if you prefer spicy food. The meal itself is not spicy, and doesn’t require additional spices. It has a perfect balance of flavor. If you’re new and want to try out the place, you can’t go wrong ordering the jerk chicken dinner plate. The wait for the food can be long, but that’s because everything you order is made fresh — they make it then and there(another thing I love about this place). If you’re in a rush, I would advise that you order ahead of time whether you’re picking up or eating in.
