I have a specific style of bar I like to go to and sandbar fits it perfectly. Its an awesome little hole in the wall for locals. The bartender are cool, the bouncers are chill and do their job really well, and karaōke is always fun.

The place is priced very well, the crowd is as diverse as it gets, the drinks are strong, the bartenders and cooks are very experienced and with seven eleven next door there’s options after hours. I also like that there are security cameras both in the parking lot and indoors. Add to that the fact they are open all but eight hours of the day and what’s not to like. Obviously I’m more on the bar side which is for 21+ but still a good value front and back. Dive bar? Maybe but it’s fun and open to all types.

So I decided to go to Sandbar on a wednesday night. I went in and sat at the bar, I decided not to drink because I had just finished drinking before I got there, I was enjoying the karaōke and chilling and all of a sudden the bartender tells me I have to leave because I was loitering.

A college dive bar. Service was poor, the tables were dirty, and if it weren’t for the Groupon, I probably wouldn’t have ever stopped here. The only reason it got two stars was because the subs were ok. Unless you’re looking for a drinking spot with college drunks or a round of pool, look somewhere else for food.

I can only review the«grill» portion of the Sandbar, but it’s not a place I’d go back to eat at again. I think they do better as a bar, and may consider coming back for Karaōke rather than the nachos.

So I’m hanging out with my friends for a birthday celebration and this guy decides to leave his girlfriend unattended. Minding my own business she decides to say hello. Well dude who knows bouncer gets ticked and they start a fight with 10 minutes left to the night. I left, pretty much sure I won’t be back. If that’s how they treat customers who hang on a weekday, then I suggest you leave them alone. Not worth the trouble. I spent a good amount of money to be thrown out and almost fought for saying hello.

I cannot say enough about Sandbar! The food is great(you must try the crab dip!) Their soup is awesome and the philly cheesesteak is the best! I recommend Sandbar!

Sandbar is a staple of Newport News night life. It’s sort of isolated in the fact that there are no other bars or restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and yet, it’s always done well. Some may remember the the place as Philly’s, but really not much changed when it became Sandbar. They still have a killer, greasy Philly Cheese Steak Sub that I definitely recommend checking out. The nighttime scene here is really cool. There is a restaurant side to the place, but at night all the action take place on the larger side of the building. They have fun bands come through there. I can remember having a great time jamming out to Snackbar Jones one night in particular. You simply cannot NOT have a good time at Sandbar.

This dive has more karaōke than Japan, and if it’s your style, as it is mine, Sandbar is the best place to go. All the«performers» deserve the quotes I just put around that word. That makes Sandbar a good place for the entire spectrum of singers, from shower sopranos to American Idol aspirers. Drinks are somewhat cheap to boot(split a pitcher with a friend), so it doesn’t take a whole lot of green before even the most cautious karaoker goes wild. Where this place falls short is it is smoky, crowded(rendering the dart boards next to the can useless), and there is not enough parking – we’ve gotten towed for parking in the lot of the neighbor, with whom the bar staff previously assured us they had a parking agreement. Still, it’s fun to go and hang out in a relaxed atmosphere with biker gangs, the recently graduated, and professionals.
