I am definitely glad I found this out-of-the-way restaurant and have visited before. Went in tonight with good memories of past visit, only to find out they were short staffed due to some arrogant and perverse neighbor that has been a detriment to both visitors and staff. Because of that, the talented chef did her best to serve the restaurant by both cooking and serving with the aid of a new-ish assistant. Everyone in the place was very understanding, true to Oregon style. We did our best to make her feel at ease despite the scenario, and were not disappointed in the experience. If we had not been there before, I might have a different take on the circumstances. But all in all, great food, good company and supporting local businesses is what it’s all about. Hope this place lands on its feet so it will be around for more to enjoy, including myself for my next trip up this direction.

I have never given a bad Unilocal review and I rarely leave reviews in general. However, this restaurant allowed me to see the true purpose of Unilocal. My valentine and I made a last minute decision to go to Newport, OR for Valentines Day. We knew most places would be overcrowded, so we picked the only place that would allow us in. We were seated immediately in a very well lit area, which was actually quite nice. There were less than 10 people in the restaurant, but only three employees– a cook, the manager, and one waitress. We were given a menu that had quite a few delicious and very traditional Italian foods. The prices ranged from $ 11 – 30, which is pretty typical of a NICE Italian restaurant. We ordered the Chicken Parmigiano($ 20) and Manicotti($ 13 – 16, I can’t remember). We were very excited because everything seemed very authentic. Then, I got up to find a bathroom and as I passed the kitchen, I noticed the cook microwaving pasta sauce. The(owner/manager?) was yelling at him very loudly about hurrying up and«just dump the pasta in it!!!», which I thought was very unprofessional, especially in such a small, exposed part of the restaurant. Then, it took us 45 minutes to get a small salad with the wrong kind of dressing. I had also ordered iced tea and was given water only. Once I asked for tea again 30 minutes after sitting down, I was told it would be right there and then I never received it at all in the entire meal. One gentlemen who was a frequent customer(he told us this when he sat down), was served immediately, he ordered the same dish as my boyfriend and received it within 15 minutes. We finally got our main course after 56 minutes. They were these TINY plates that should have only been worth $ 10 max, my pasta was cold, the chicken was actually pretty good(although hardly warm), and my boyfriend’s food made him sick after dinner. We scarfed it down, since we were in a rush. Then, it took them an additional 25 minutes to bring us our check AFTER we asked the waitress to bring it. Then, we were told to pay at the counter by the kitchen. We walked up to the counter and had a full view in to the kitchen. The manager/owner was still angrily talking with the cook who seemed like he was about to cry. She made eye contact with us, continued to yell at him for another 3 – 5 minutes, and then finally came to the cash register. As I handed her the money, she explained that she was training the cook and the one waitress(On Valentines Day! The Black Friday of Restaurants!!) and thanked us for being patient. I would of been overjoyed to hear an apology after that experience if the nice frequent customer hadn’t explained how he always had the same waitress… so, we knew she was lying. We spent a total of $ 43 for cold, small portions, an iced tea I never received, and two truffles that tasted like dirt. Take a look at their pictures, those plates ARE the plates used but they never fill the plate completely.

Great food! Friendly staff! Perfect place for a good meal that is also kid friendly. Recommend ordering the manicotti for the kids if you want them to eat something other than standard kid faire at most restaurants.

Homemade noodles were out of this world. Gave the chef choice of my meal and did not regret it one bit. They paired shrimp pesto pasta with Pinot Gris and poached pear soaked in orange spice sauce. AMAZING!!!

Im surprised at the negative reviews, it has been a couple years so they must’ve improved. We discovered the Green Gables yesterday evening. At first i was unsure of our choice to eat there because the restaurant was within a bookstore and didn’t look very welcoming(to be honest). The word ‘homemade’ made up our minds and we were seated in the quaint eatery. The service was decent, helpful and actually pleasant. The prices were to be expected but not too expensive. The wine was a delight, the chianti superb. Even more amazing was the food! We were blown away at how absolutely tasty and perfectly seasoned the food was — we both swore it was the best Italian we’ve had. The dining experience was around an hour, due to the fact it’s all homemade. I had the chicken pot pie and she had the meat lasagna, and the cannoli!!! All fantastic. The decorating could use a makeover but don’t judge a book by its cover, the treasure here is found in the food!

Amazing manicotti! Fun atmosphere, and darling venue! Next time we might try staying at the bed and breakfast upstairs.

This review is for the café. I dug the place. Service was really slow, but pleasant. Newport doesn’t offer a whole lot of options, and I’m wondering if take out would have been faster. The food was tasty, and the service was pleasant. The portions were huge. Bread was refilled non-stop. There’s a little library/used bookshop where you can eat. I almost didn’t go in this place, but I’m glad I did. I liked the vibe of Sinatra and Dean Martin piping loudly while they took their time and made my food. The only thing I would say is my meatballs were kinda meh, dry and not interesting. The pasta was good, cooked well, and the sauce was not bad. We didn’t leave room for dessert but it looked like they had some good ones.

Green gables B and B… who could forget it, wish I could. But you can forget it as a choice for where to spend a night. It is well past it’s prime, and needs a renovation to give it some charm. The exterior paint is worn, and the bedroom is a jumble of furniture leftovers, unmatched towels, old VHS machine. It did appear to be clean, and the bed was comfortable, but everything felt old and worn. Not the romantic or charming experience typical of b and b’s. The owners, who are sisters, also run a Italian restaurant out of the side of the house through a walk out basement. That is where We checked in while they readied their dinner prep. We went round to the front door and inside where stairs lead up to the second floor where two rooms are rented out. There is no parlor and they do not serve breakfast. it really should be classified as a room to rent… thats all it is. For me the most disturbing experience was walking up the stairs, as the wall that divides the rented areas from the part where the owners live is opened up so they can see you and you see their livingroom. What a smelley mess! The barking dogs, tv game show, and stink of dog… like wet dog, was disturbing when added to the garlic scents coming from their basement diner. I would never trust their sense of cleanliness after seeing that, in the room or restaurant. Bathtub only, no shower. The windows are low and the blinds on them are cheap rattan ready made blinds way longer than needed. So we felt like people could see in. The ocean view is a tiny tiny sliver from one window. Wasn’t truthful to say the balcony overlooks it… it just gives you a first hand view of the hoarder neighbors collection across the street.

This review is for the café or restaurant only. Plus: Wed night All You Can Eat Spaghetti, fair prices & portion sizes. Minus: ex. poor & confused service, disorganized, orders extremely mixed up, long prep times, food only fair. Pasta overcooked for a place that specializes in Italian cuisine. As a tourist to Newport, I would recommend another restaurant to dine at.

Not what we expected, the room looked just like it did online and was clean and comfortable, however it was just upstairs from their personal home, I could hear them watching TV until 1 in the morning and had a hard time sleeping. Wasn’t as nice and romantic as we were hoping.

We were hesitant when we drove by our first night in Nye Beach because of the odd décor, but decided what the heck — let’s try it on the 2nd night. The funky eclectic atmosphere and live music of Stella Blue works and made this a fantastic experience. The food was wonderful — excellent cheese coated foccacia squares, fresh salad, delicious linguini with homemade clam sauce(with at leat 8 steamed butter clams atop); quinoa pasta with butter garlic sauce and homemade FABULOUS meatballs. Everyone was very friendly. It was a «one of a kind» real treat!

This review is only for the café. There are a few adjectives I’d like to get out of the way before we move on any further. Overpriced(you may add«way» to the front of that, if you’d like), bland, underwhelming, poorly managed(I don’t think that’s an adjective as a whole), money-grubbing. My biggest complaint is the price. If a restaurant is priced as if it’s fine dining, you need to offer good food. If you’re going to charge $ 31 for a pasta dish(yes, with crab, but so?), you should offer fresh grated Parmesan, not cheese out of a can. Your bread should taste good no matter what you charge. Your sauce shouldn’t taste like it came out of a can. The staff shouldn’t ignore you. You shouldn’t serve pop out of cans. You shouldn’t make your customers feel like they were uninvited guests to the basements of your 1970s farm house. You shouldn’t tell your customer that you don’t want a fork when you ask for one. Please do me a favor. Don’t eat here. The options aren’t great in Newport(there’s some good food, I’m not knocking Newport, but I realize there just aren’t many Italian restaurants here), but it’s not worth it. I think you may come out ahead to drive to Florence or maybe Lincoln City, pay for the necessary gas and pay less for the good food you can get there.

My first day in Newport, I wandered into the Green Gables to get an espresso. Struck up a nice conversation with Yolanda who said she bakes everything herself so I started perusing the goods. I’m not a sweets person at all but wanted to try something with my coffee so I ordered a slice of red velvet cake. It was simply to die for. Not too sweet, just rich and moist with a thick cream cheese frosting. I usually leave half of a dessert on my plate but I ate the whole thing. Months later I ran into Yo again at the musical festival Burnt Woodstock and had their meatball sandwich which was delicious. The bread didn’t get soggy and the sauce didn’t overwhelm the taste of the meatballs. Really, really good. I’m looking forward to having a full meal at the café. These Neapolitan sisters can cook! I went back to the café with my nephews for dinner. We had lasagna, salads and focaccia bread. Everything was yummy and the boys loved it. But there isn’t something a bit odd about the library décor, which makes one feel as if they shouldn’t speak very loud. It’s very quiet in there. And there are some misplaced decorations. Hopefully they’ll make some improvements on that end so the ambiance is as wonderful as the food.

This review is just for the Italian Café, not the Bed & Breakfast. We ordered the special, 3 cheese manicotti with bread, salad, and a canoli for dessert, for $ 16.99. We also ordered a glass of chianti. The chianti, manicotti, and salad were pretty good. The housemade salad dressing and housemade bread were meh. The canoli was weird… the filling had an odd texture and flavor, and the outer part more like a waffle cone that wasn’t cooked enough than it was like a canoli. The service was adequate. The loud guitar player/singer did not enhance my dining experience, though apparently half a dozen people came specifically to see him play. I like live music, I just didn’t care for his music. The décor in this place is probably the worst feature, though. It’s a mish-mash of standard Italian(red, white, and green), white string lights, country-style, wall-to-wall bookcases, and coffee shop. Near our table was: leftover Christmas décor with a Chinese flare(green sparkly things coming out of a red Asian looking swan, with white porcelain angel and tree nearby); an original pastel watercolor by a local artist; a suncatcher hanging from the bottom of that painting; and a large curtain with a coffee motif hiding a back room. This place could be featured on one of those TV shows where they take terrible décor and redo the whole thing. So many other good places in Newport… why go here? ARR Place(just to the left of Green Gables) and Café Mundo(a few blocks north) as well as the Pizza/Panini place(also north) would be your closest reliably good options. By the way, all the dining in Newport is slightly expensive. This place might be a dollar or two cheaper per person than some other places.

Here tourist are an economic opportunity. The food and service in this(what might be charming place) is below ordinary. Watch out for the splitting charge. My wife and I shared a salad(which we split at the table) and they charged three dollars extra. They also mislead us into ordering and splitting an adult portion of spaghetti and meat balls for two kids that then cost even more than two childerns portions. We had to ask for an itemized bill to understand how the cost became inflated, –close to ten bucks. When I approached the subject with the owner they were surly and ill mannered.

Plus: Good Italian food. Minus: No shower in our room. Not much romance. Closed on Sunday and Monday, so no breakfast those days.
