Food was steep, and underwhelmed
I’ll tell you what — I got a solid first impression here. I walked in and was met with a welcome, embracing heat as I escaped the bitter cold, and a lively jazz band poured exuberant tunes out over the patrons from the rear of the place, enveloping the space with brassy vibrance. The friends I was meeting were directly ahead, as was another group of people also congregating for drinks and dinner… people streamed in to join the fun throughout the evening, in fact, though it never felt crowded. Off to the left was the well-​stocked bar — for the visual learners, an array of impressive beer bottles stood sentry next to a colorful blackboard of tap selections touching multiple continents, styles, and price points. Some highlights included Allagash special offerings, selections from de Dolle and de Struisse, ToOL, a pear cider, wild beers… a great gamut.
As we settled in, Jasper greeted us with enthusiasm and provided great service throughout the evening; she balanced being timely without being overly-​doting.
We were informed the menu changes relatively radically day by day based on local ingredients available, and the restaurant’s philosophy to avoid waste — they’ll err toward under-​buying and risk running out versus having a surplus of food that then is less fresh than desired. I liked that thinking, and the selection was plenty diverse.
While we enjoyed our initial refreshing beverages, we snacked on some fried pickles, done in quarter-​spear style, rather than chips. I dug ‘em — they kept the fidelity of a dill pickle’s best characteristics, and were savory to boot. After perusing the menu further, my friend and I each chose sandwiches. I grabbed a bacon Reuben, figuring I’d go a little decadent on this cold-​as-​all-​get-​out evening. It arrived resplendent with Texas toast style bread, accompanied by a dip-​friendly cup of Russian © and a veritable cornucopia of fries. So far, so good. Norey’s is my favorite spot in Newport! Norey’s warm and inviting personality permeates the atmosphere and her desserts are always fresh & amazing. Chef Tyler’s food is phenomenal! His smoked wings are the best in the world (literally!). The 3-​step process of marination, smoking, and flash-​frying gives a depth of flavor and results in a taste explosion!
The wait staff is excellent and very knowledgable of the menu and extensive drink selection. Shout out to Jillian and Jasper!
Being fairly new to the area, Norey’s has helped Newport to feel like «Home».
