Kyle(the owner and head chef) makes amazing food! We had the spud nuggets poutine, duck confit grilled cheese and the French dip grilled cheese. Great little place!

Their food is so fresh and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. I think I’ve been there about five times in two months but they definitely consider me a regular now. The staff puts a lot of love into what they do. Food cooked with great vibes definitely resonates in your taste buds. Go here for a happy tummy!

OMG, grill cheese sandwiches were awesome. I had the meatloaf sandwich which was absolutely amazing. If you are in Newport, RI don’t hesitate to check this place out!

Owner/head chef contacted me in a profanity laced email today because of my review. He has been reported. Zero tolerance for name calling and belittling customers past or present. My review was far from insulting. It was our experience and it is was a bad one. So, if the owner cannot take a honest review, maybe he shouldn’t be in business. Name calling is low, and considering his message to me, I now understand where they get the customer service training from. Jesus still loves you. I’ll pray for you.

We went here for brunch after a bachelorette party and the food was delicious. Between 4 of us we had the French toast stuffed with bacon, the grilled cheese, the patty melt and the frittata. We also got two sides of the hash brown poutine. It was all really good and came out quickly. I would definitely go back.

My boyfriend & I were in Newport for a long weekend for a friends wedding. I must say, while we were in town, we didn’t have 1 bad meal. However, the meal that we’ll be talking about for awhile was at Scratch! We both enjoyed our sandwiches but the spud nuggets were what sold us. I’m pretty certain that my boyfriend would put that on the top of his list of reasons to come back to RI! There should be a line to get into this place! PS– the cookies we took for the road back to NJ were also very tasty!!! Thanks Scratch!

Just had a fabulous lunch with my bf, sis, & niece! Rare March snow day went perfectly well with my curried pumpkin soup and gourmet tomato & bacon grilled cheese! BF& sis had the absolute delicious, hardy Hungarian stew(of course I tried it!)! The owners were super friendly & accommodating! Really nice quaint place and priced right! I highly recommend and will visit again!

Though Scratch was certainly on our radar, we actually landed here twice by default when our intended destination was packed and it was too cold to wait outside for a table. Since it was breakfast, we opted for the grilled cheese frittatas. My husband had the special(hash) and I had a vegetarian sandwich. Both were larger than expected(mine served me for two meals) and were delicious. On our second visit I didn’t order anything(still had that other half, remember?) but my husband ordered 2 more(one for breakfast and one for later.) Again, both were tasty. Service was friendly and great(we got takeout but you can get table service, though the space is small.) While waiting, we were offered coffee several times which was thoughtful. Definitely a place worth ending up!

Dude! Yes! Go here. Get the ‘sup shorty sandwich and enjoy the best sandwich you’ll ever eat(or at least, the best sandwich you’ll eat all week). I will go back on our next trip to Newport and I will get the exact same sandwich because when you’ve found such deliciousness it’s hard to let it go! As a side note, my spouse and I were not fans of the spud nuggets – for him they were overdone to his liking and for me, it was something in the flavoring they use. It’s been a couple weeks since going, so I can’t immediately recall the flavor(perhaps it was oregano?) but it fell short of interesting for me.

The grilled cheese here is ONPOINT! One of the best I’ve ever had, the bread is toasted to perfection, just amazing all around. We tried the curried pumpkin soup, reuben and a veggie frittata, and everything were delicious(reuben wins though). Service was great, we had a really nice and attentive waitress. It’s a bit pricey, but still highly recommended!

Stopped here on our way out of Newport as we headed back to NJ. There were so many choices and lots of delicious options so I was really looking forward to my lunch. We ordered everything as take-out, and I had the Bangkok in a Sock wrap. Unfortunately, it was pretty bland and one-note. My dad ordered the same thing and was of similar opinion. The rest of my family was pretty meh on their lunch choices — ham & cheese croisant, vegetable soup, and salad. The crackerdoodle cookie was crispy and delicious, and the service was so friendly! When we were mistakenly given the wrong soup, they gladly give us the correct one and let us keep the other! Unfortunately, that one was the chicken marsala special, which tasted pretty intensely of rosemary. All in all, the owners/staff seem incredibly friendly, and the environment is charming, but the food needs a little work. FOOD: 2⁄5 ENVIRONMENT: 3⁄5 SERVICE: 5⁄5 VALUE: 3⁄5 OVERALL: 3⁄5

A real mom & pop type shop. It’s small on the inside with only a handful of tables and their breakfast menu is not the biggest, but none of that seemed to matter when my food was brought out to the table. They had a few different options of frittata grilled cheeses and other items on the breakfast menu(French toast, etc…) I ordered their southwestern frittata grilled cheese on sourdough bread. WOWOWOWOW!!! Besides the fact that this is something you’ll never find in your diet plan, it was one of the most amazing breakfast items I’ve eaten in a while! The bread was super crispy, flakey, and buttery… with the frittata inside just gooping with cheese on top of cheese… and the flavors of the corn, black beans, and salsa just mixed together too well. Also, I think it was only $ 6 and I couldn’t eat the whole thing. Totally worth it!

Yes, yes, yes! This place has everything going for it. Friendly, energetic and eager to impress chef and employees included. The set up: It’s a small and unassuming little shop with a small counter and a few tables to eat at. If the weather is warm enough there are a few tables outside, too. There are paper menus as well as a menu overhead the register area. The menu: The menu is amazing for lots of reasons. The item names and descriptions had me entertained. I giggled the whole read-through. Another important aspect to the menu is that it offers you lots of choices but maintains a small enough menu to offer fresh products. The food: While they offer wraps and salads… and while I’m sure they’re great, you’re here for the grilled sandwiches, aren’t you? Why waste time messing around with healthy greens when you can crunch into a buttery-cheesy-messy deliciousness of a sandwich, hm? For breakfast they offer interesting French toast stuffed with Brie and topped with peaches. They offer their grilled cheese sandwiches with a slice of breakfast quiche inside. Despite the early hour I arrived, it was lunchtime for my partner in crime and I. We had been up since around 3:30am and we needed lunch at 9:30am. I ordered the Party Dip and Spudnuggets. This sandwich is a masterful mix of creamy artichoke-spinach dip and cheese topped with fried spinach and garlic aioli. Everything was well seasoned, just a tad more salt than I typically enjoy. The bread was tasty and well toasted. The buttery crunch of bread really worked well with the ooey-gooey filling. The Spudnuggets are deep golden brown, deep fried, extra herby seasoned perfection in a little cube. Get an order or two and don’t share. My adventure partner had the patty melt and thought it was spectacular. Vegemitarians: Several items to choose from. You won’t be bored and they seem willing and able to modify things as needed to keep you happy. I am beyond depressed this place is a 5 hour drive from where I live. Also, I believe they should be selling t-shirts that say«I heart Spudnuggets» !!! If they do this, I would like to be paid for my idea… in a lifetime supply of Spudnuggets.

I don’t think I came here as much as I wanted and needed to on my recent trip to Newport! This downtown Newport sandwich shop could easily get it done in San Diego! I didn’t want to panic order, but even after I did, I was very happy with what I ordered! Their menu is quite expansive, but I ended up ordering Turkey Day Gourmet Wrap! Wow. It was amazing with the spud nuggets inside, along with a side order of spud nuggets. What are spud nuggets? They remind me of a little of tater tots and hash browns and fries. Whatever and however they are made, they are delicious! The other guys got their Deluxe Traditional Grilled Cheese and their Steak and Greens Wrap. They were not disappointed! Their customer service was top notch and very friendly. I loved it! I’m sad that I will have to be on a new search in San Diego for a shop this great. I however will have very good memories of my trip to Newport and to Scratch Kitchen!

I have definitely been finding myself craving Scratch more now that the cooler weather has rolled in. The box lunch here has to be one of the best deals in town. For $ 10 you get half a grilled cheese sandwich, a mug of soup, spud nuggets, a drink from the cooler, AND a fresh bakery item. I’m particularly in love with the soups here… last weekend I had an amazing curried pumpkin bisque that put me right in my happy place. Spicy, sweet and savory. Yum. The woman who works the counter is always a pleasure to speak with, and service is speedy. The dining area is fairly small. I think there are about 5 tables as well as a two outside on the sidewalk when weather permits. Turnover is pretty quick so you can usually nab a seat. Great local spot — can’t wait to try all the other sandwiches!

What a fantastic place, the food is all from scratch(hence the name). My breakfast was unreal, and having worked with many chefs, I am a picky foodie. Paul, one of the two owners/partners, cooked my breakfast, which was probably 10,000 calories of pure bliss, aka grilled cheese Lorraine and spud nuggets. Huge portions! What a nice friendly and welcoming vibe. They will rule this town’s breakfast scene soon, I predict, they have only been open 6 months and will only get more popular because this food is killer.

I stopped in recently for a turkey day wrap, spud nuggets, tomato soup, coffee, and coconut macaroon. Overall the food was good, love the soup. I know a place that does a similar type wrap but they add a side of gravy. It would be a good idea here too, just needs that something extra. The guy who was helping me was very friendly. I do think it is nice when the owners talk to customers when they have time. That did not happen here, despite it being very slow. People appreciate it and as an owner you should acknowledge your customers, if you have time. Go to Los Andes, you will always see the owners checking on customers. And many other places I go to. It is the kind of thing that makes people want to rave about your business. Just a tip. I may stop in again to try some other things.

This is a cute little café located close to the center of Newport near the piers. The café had enough seating for our group of 5 people, it had a very homie and cozy feel which we loved. The prices here are really reasonable but unfortunately some of the portions are a bit on the small side. The quiche, for example was quite small and not that filing as breakfast. The soup was quite good, but my favorite thing here is definitely The Portagoose, one of the grilled cheese sandwiches with sausage, peppers, pepper jack cheese and aioli sauce, it was absolutely delicious and probably one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had, definitely try this when you come here!

I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who’s looking for a quick and delicious meal at any time of day. I had the Vegimatarian frittata with bacon on two thick pieces of toast(like a grilled cheese on steroids) and it was fantastic. The wait staff was also extremely friendly and made us all smile. I can’t wait to go back!
