Very good food. Enjoyed the sauerbraten very much. My only complaint would be that it could have been a little more sour but I know that’s a personal preference. I have eaten here several times and haven’t been disappointed.

In for our birthdays today… It’s German and old fashioned continental. No need no explain .it is what it is. And that just fine Going in know that schnitzel is the way u want it and rouladen and wursts are the reason you go. The staff is wonderful, uniforms fit the experience. When u need a bit of old world dining… go to Pumpernickel s

This is quite authentic. The saurbrauten is good. I like the whole premise of the place. I think its got a good thing going for it. Hard to find this kind of hearty fare around anymore.

Went there about a year ago for a friend’s birthday. It was a bit late and a Sunday night. The food was OK– nothing great. The prices were a little too high for what we got. Probably not going back. I think there is another location in Hicksville? I do like the OLDSCHOOL décor a lot ! I feel like it’s 1973 all over again and I have to get home to watch«All in the Family» on CBS channel 2!(I’m old).

Not the best place I have been to, not by a longshot. Some have discussed the dated ambiance. Perhaps, but not a big deal. Some complained about the service. Our server was friendly but often scarce for long periods. The food was mediocre at best. The duck and the pork chop were very fatty. As a first timer, I would not come back. Ok, the native dress was cute and the beer was good. But that doesn’t justify a return. Sorry.

Great neighborhood restaurant for comfort food and gemuchlicheit. Feel right at home with every visit. The murals in the foyer were done by Hans Gabali, so many of his works are outside and fading away. This one is still in pristine condition. The Black Forest stature is the real thing… not made in China. A little bit of Germany to be enjoyed when you are in Northport.

We are Huntington area residents for over 30 years, Pumpernickel’s has long been one of our favorite restaurants. We like Artie and the staff… They are very nice people. But the food quality has been in decline for quite a while. Today we had Sauerbraten and Steak. Sauerbraten was bland and dry. The Steak was not a good one and not cooked as I had ordered. The meat tasted a bit like liver… unpleasant. To top it off, we were given chocolate pudding for dessert, It was off — as in spoiled. Terrible… Not in a rush to go back… I am not sure we ever will. Quite a shame.

I had always heard great things about this place growing up, so it seemed like a great place to get together for a girls night reunion Cow Harbor weekend, i really dont eat German food but figured I was good with a salad and an appetizer, it was more about socializing with my friends who traveled in for the weekend festivities. Unfortunately the waitress was not very good and when asked a question and asked to ask the manager, told us flat out that she knew the answers already since she had worked there 20 years, She also refused to give us separate checks and seemed appalled that we would even ask such a thing. We did make a reservation as it was a Friday night but as soon as we were brought our bill we were asked to leave our table since they had a party coming in which was never mentioned beforehand. We all still had wine and were not ready to leave but were told we could sit at the bar which was overflowing with no room for us, We stood by the piano and tried to make the best of it and were told we could sit at a small table which would have been fine but then, when asked if we were eating dinner we said that we had just had dinner and were asked to move out of our table by the hostess who told us we could not sit there. We continued to stand in the entry since we had spent a good amount of money and wanted to finish our wine and were repeatedly given dirty looks so after several minutes gave up and went elsewhere. I m extremely disappointed in the service and treatment by the staff and will never return to this establishment again, Next time we will go to Millers Ale house or the Northport Tasting Room for our reunion, and will get better treatment, not be forced to leave our table and spend alot less money $$$. I’ve been to this restaurant multiple times. The pumpernickel bread they serve at the beginning does not disappoint. I always enjoy the salad with honey mustard dressing, they have a unique taste to their honey mustard. Sometimes they slather on too much dressing on the salad, which ruins it, so you might want to ask for it on the side. The schnitzel is my go-to dish, and has been consistently good. Other people at my table tried various menu items, and people seemed to generally enjoy whatever they got. The décor makes you feel like you’re visiting grandma’s house, and I don’t mean it in a good way. But it’s not a deal breaker. The reason I give them only three stars is because they sat us right in the middle of room in an awkward position, when I tried to move my chair to get comfortable I got asked to move back the chair in an unfriendly manner. During all of my visits there, I have noticed frequently that the wait staff does have a bit of a snooty attitude.

The main problem I have is the décor. There is a thin line between old style grace like zum stammich in queens and out of style which is this place. Hopelessly outdated although clean. The food was meh. I had the sauerbraten which was dry and basically flavorless. I also had a draft beer which you cannot go wrong with. There were a lot of townies enjoying themselves and the waitress was pleasant with a sort of German outfit. The place seems not to know what it is. Is it a 60 plus Suffolk retired hvac worker watering hole, a German place? I would pass on this for a German place. But local pub seems ok. Again don’t like the décor. Too dive Bar-y not rhineland-y.

Pumpernickels is an authentic German restaurant that serves a sauerbraten with red cabbage and potato dumplings that any German grandma would be proud of. If you’re not a fan of German food they also serve a formidable platter of twin lobster tails. Full bar is always a plus. Service can be spotty ranging from polite and friendly to cold and aloof hence 4 stars rather than 5

Great authentic German food. Sauerbraten with Potato Dumplings is outstanding. Highly recommend. Better than Black Forrest brew house.

For the record… I really wanted to give this at least a four star review… but I can’t. The décor is what you’d expect from a German Restaurant from the 70s, which is nice. The food… sorry to say was lackluster. Salad smothered in dressing and then to wait 45 minutes for our main course was just not right. The staff was very friendly and everyone was nice. The food was so so and the potato pancakes were leaden and greasy. Maybe we just caught them on an off night because I’ve wanted to go here for years.

Tonight was the first time were we ever there and sadly it will be the last for us. We were treating friends for for a nice dinner out and we were totally embarrassed by the terrible service we had. Three stars are only for the food which was good. We sat there with just water for the longest time. No one came and asked if we wanted drinks or anything for an uncomfortable amount of time. Our poor guests! They had a really long hard weekend and we wanted to give them a nice break. I was ready to go to the bar myself! When we were finally able to order, my husband ordered salad and said if they serve cucumbers, he did not want any. The server said she hoped she remembered. When our salads showed up, we all had a heap of shredded carrots except him. Our dinners came out and all meals were good. We were in the middle of eating and surprisingly our server came over and asked how thing were then proceeded to take the bread basket that was not empty and off she went before we could say anything! We had to ask someone else for more bread to have with our meals. Three of us were done eating but one was still trying to enjoy his when the bus boy came and cleared everyone’s plates and tried to take the bread away. At least we were able to catch that before it left had the table. Now our one friend was eating and our plates were taken away. Thank God we were good friends otherwise that could have been very awkward. I worked as a server for 20 years and I would never want to stiff a server, ever. But tonight she was lucky to get the meager $ 10 tip that my husband did reluctantly leave and the check was $ 156.00. When served well we are accustomed to leaving 20% ! This was just sad.

If I were to describe Pumpernickels in one word — Amazing. My wife and I were looking for good German food and we weren’t disappointed. We started with the Pretzel. Delicious — and huge. With the three dipping sauces it was great. More than enough for both of us. My wife had an Octoberfest beer — it was delicious. For dinner we both had the Beef Stroganoff. The meat was so tender there was no need for a knife. The red cabbage was — dare I say — perfect. Looking around at other dishes — next time I’m coming for the Sauerbraten. Portion size — there was enough for us have lunch the next day. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. My only suggestion — make reservations.

Parking is very limited in the rear, otherwise it is street parking on a fork in the road, on Main Street in Northport. I have been here several times for their Sauerbraten. The pumpernickel bread was delicious and the sauerbraten had just the right amount of sour on lean pieces of meat. The gravy over the potatoes is what one dreams of and the red cabbage was delicious. Service was on target and I love this place. It has been around for decades and once you try it, you’ll see why.

Bavarian pretzel was the size of an infant and really really good. Horseradish mustard definitely the way to go. Authentic German food, beer, and atmosphere. Had the jagerschnitzel, also tried some beef stroganoff, both were top notch. Absolutely going back.

Whats better on a cold winter night than good hearty comfort food? And where do you get it? Pumpernickels. The décor hasnt changed in years but the food and service are good. Big portions, nice beer & wine selection, friendly service, authentic German dishes and good prices. I had the Hungarian beef goulash, it was sooo good. Yum yum yum.

Updating my review because it really doesnt get much better than this! Been doing some Oktoberfesting lately and I have to say Pumpernickels is probably at the top of the list. Their sauerbraten simply can not be beat.
