Stopped by here with the 2015 Taco Tour crew. The exterior is a little unassuming on the outside, but if you’re in the area, El Ranchito is worth a visit if you haven’t been before(and yes I know there are dozens of locally lauded taquerias nearby). Now the interior was a bit cramped with perhaps one-too-many tables, complete with vinyl table clothes. Still, you could tell this was a mom-and-pop establishment that was dedicated to serving up affordable and delicious Mexican food. Seeing as we were on a taco tour, I order up one asada and one pastor taco. Both were pretty average and in line with what you’d expect from a run-of-the-mill taco joint in South Omaha. A a postscript note, seeing Lianna N’s pic of the cheek taco makes me think I should’ve been a bit more adventurous. They also serve you complimentary chips and salsa and have dried peppers for you to sprinkle on your food if you dare. In all, a worthy spot for a quick meal.

For tacos, 2.5. This was stop #2 on the 2015 taco tour, an event organized annually by local Unilocaler Sarah G. First, setting: I dont ask for much when dining in smaller Mexican joints on 24th street, so my expectations were met just fine here. Clean tables, friendly staff and a glass of ice water with A/C is good in my book. Not much ambiance, but for a trip down south 24th street, pretty much a standard setting. A few families and friends eating, and I noticed we were definitely in the minority, not being Hispanic – great! I am all for eating where the locals dine. Tacos(didn’t try other menu items as it was a taco tour): Standard double corn tortilla with the meat, onions, cilantro and(no lime wedge). I could have asked for one I am sure, but they are often offered with the tacos, so I didn’t bother. Complimentary chips with orders, nothing to rave about, a few salsa options. The salsa offered here is more of a fully blended liquid sauce variety [not chunky] served in syrup dispensers and I think just sit on the table so not the kind of salsa that requires chilling. Don’t quote me on that one, but that is what it seems like to me. Green and red verde were options with the complimentary chips. The tacos themselves were fine, but in my opinion with so many places around to choose from, not my number 1. This is probably due to the meat, which was lacking in flavor to me, although texture was great.

Homemade mexican food, cozy place and great service. Even though it’s a small place, there’s a big variety. Just don’t expect anything fancy. This is where you’d come for an authentic mexican meal. Be warned, the portions are big!

Definitely a hidden gem. This small 7 or 8 table restaurant was excellent for a shot-in-the-dark pick while driving across the country. Mexican through and through but a great find — excellent food and excellent atmosphere make this place a hidden gem.
