I thought Baron’s was an urban legend. I’d heard there was a vintage store in or around The Warehouse Café, but nobody could tell me its name or precisely where it was. Finally I went to search for it myself and… I could not find it. On my second visit I inquired at the cute little artsy shop a few storefronts away. The nice lady there told me to go through the green double doors(how did I miss the big«ANTIQUES» sign the first time???) and walk straight through until I bumped into it. Sure enough, that worked. But, it was closed. Baron’s has funky hours. It’s only open 3 days a week — Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — and it may or may not be open during the posted times. If you go on a Saturday or Sunday you will most likely luck out on an early opening at around 1 p.m.(versus 2 p.m.), but — just in case — you should plan on having lunch somewhere before heading over. Or call first. Or kill time in the café across the street, which is what we did today. Once I finally stepped through the doors, I was surprised to see that the store is bigger than I’d imagined. There’s a mix of vintage and new, and everything from t-shirts to bustiers, platform shoes to Playboy magazines, leather chaps to woolen caps, guayaberas to folding TV dinner tables, and skull patches to costume jewelry. Baron’s has an ambiance that reflects the rough-and-tumble allure of Port Costa. A must-see if you’re in the area on a weekend afternoon. P. S. Cash only… there’s an ATM in the bar.
