I was in need of a shop to make my bike ready to ship by air. On my fifth call I got a tentative ‘yes’ — but. They did fulfill their end of the bargain /the bike was ready in time — at a reasonable fee. The extraordinary part wasn’t realized until I opened the box 2 days later /and began reassembling — parts were wrapped in foam /or heavy cardboard to prevent chaffing — the whole system was zip tied to prevent movement & rubbing Small parts /pedals were in a separate box. Very professional /very well done !

I first went to 21st for help getting set up for some gravel touring. On the advice of the mechanics there, they built up a dynamo hub to a great touring rim. The turnaround was great and they had me all set for my first tour. It’s been 2 years and thousands of miles later and the wheel that provides a charge for my light/phone charger(also purchased there) has never had any issues, not even needing to be trued again. I go to this shop frequently and always find the mechanics are reliable and approachable. I also know they are big supporters of the Portland cyclocross scene. Great shop, thanks for all your hard work guys!

Finally, I have my boyfriend back. Since moving to Portland he immediately found his go-to bike shop and eventually ordered a Surly Troll to be customized by the brilliant staff at 21st Avenue Bicycles. They were all exceptionally friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and very patient as they worked with him in creating his bike, which exceeded his expectations. Shout out to Kurt at 21st Avenue Bicycles! Very energetic and enthusiastic, Kurt worked with my boyfriend nearly every step of the way. From the moment my boyfriend walked into the shop and began talking about his desired usage for the bike, to walking out with the final product, Kurt was amazing — everyone was fantastic! Undoubtedly, we will be back and already contemplating when the next bike — by 21st Avenue Bicycles — will be part of our growing collection.

I do not know how to ride a bicycle well. In fact, I barely know how to ride a bike. My friend was adamant on teaching me and riding around Portland one sunny day so we came here to rent one for me. The staff is amazing. Two guys helped me get on, made me feel good about riding, and helped me out and down the street. The deposit for rentals is $ 800 so that was a bit daunting, but other than that, they were just so nice and friendly that I would always recommend this shop for renting. I believe for 24 hours I paid $ 75, and they were very, very lenient on the return timing.

My friend ordered a bike 2 weeks ago and was told it was a «rush order». Although his card was charged, he still has not received any contact from the store about his bike. Not exactly what I consider good customer service or a «rush» order.

I live in NorthWest and have come to this shop many times for various needs on my bicycle. Every time I have come in for maintenance needs or to buy spare parts, they have always put me first. That is something that should never go underrated. Thank you Nick and the rest of the staff for your sterling professionalism and courteous help once again.

The guys at this shop rock. They took my road bike and converted it for this 67 year old bod. They were awesome. Go there!!!

From the moment I walked in, 21st Ave Bicycles made me feel nothing but comfortable. They were very upfront with all the costs and gave me options to get back on the road quickly and cheaply with minimal costs as well as full overhaul costs and benefits. I ended up just getting the bare minimum done but upon riding out, my bike felt like it was brand new. Can’t say enough good things about the friendly staff. As someone new to the neighborhood, I would have no hesitations recommending them for their service and friendly staff.

I think this place has a great atmosphere. They have a friendly employees who know bikes very well. I got my bike here and they were very willing to customize it to my preferences. While they may not be the cheapest, I go to them for everything bike-related because they are very knowledgable and often help me for free(even before I purchased my new bike there). I have not rented from them, but I have purchased a few accessories from them in the past. 21st Avenue Bicycles is a great bike shop and a perfect fit for the neighborhood. Now if they would just install a couple beer taps so I can kick back and relax while they tune up my bike…

I was nervous from the other reviews about the attitude I might experience. I knew I needed some work done, it being a 3 year old bike and me mostly a fair weather rider until recently. I choose them for the winter special and it was close to my work. It appears the previous reviews have helped. I was treated well, friendly not overly«Portland». I thought I needed a full tear down due to age and some problems. They popped it on the rack and just said if I did minor tune up special, and a few cable replacements I should be good to go. The work seemed pricey but I compared them to other shops and they are priced competitively. If they could get their turn around time faster, they would be a fine shop. I took it in right at opening on a Thurs 10am and did not get it back until 4pm Friday.

It’s like having a bike shop that’s owned by a good friend. Every time I go in they are super nice and helpful(NOT pretentious). They will not only do small things to my bike(usually for free even) but they’ll show me how as they do it. If you want clothes/gear for the person on the bike they only have a very limited selection, but if you something for the bike itself, this is the spot.

Great rental place of you are in the alphabet district in Portland. Not crowded and you get a great starting point in a part of Portland that I’m not sure many visitors know about. We rented for the day, I thought it was a bit pricey, infact for two of us it was cheaper to rent a car than rent two bikes and two locks. But we didn’t want the cheapest way to get around Portland, we wanted a way to see Portland other than a paved road in a metal box. The staff at 21st Ave Bicycles are super friendly and helpful. I’d rent from them again!

Bike shop? Well, yeah, they sell bikes and apparently do servicing. But a bike shop? Not in the least. I purchased a bad-ass Surly Ogre from these guys. Instead of being warm and fuzzy about the fact that I was throwing $ 1500 their way for a really great bike, they were trying to nickle and dime me for every little accessory, down to the bottle cages. I was told, «they aren’t free, you know?» Alright, then take them all off, you know? My girlfriend was going to purchase a set of fenders for her bike that day too. «That will be $ 20 for the install.» For an overpriced set fenders and 10 minute install? No thanks. Portland has a ton of great bike shops, but I don’t believe this is one of them. Good inventory, bad customer service. If you need a bike and can’t wait(I was leaving the next day for Alaska), do what you gotta do. But if you have the time, let one of the better shops do an order for you. I should give them a single star, but they had my bike, and for that I am very grateful.

I called to check inventory at 21st, looking for a Globe Daily. Peter, who answered my call, was very helpful and, though the shop was currently closed, answered my questions and offered to set up an XL bike forme to come compare the L and XL sizes the following day. Peter followed up with me at the opening of the shop the next day and was amicable throughout. With the bike I bought a helmet, lock, and pump(the essentials) and had the lock bracket installed on the bike. He answered my questions about road safety and bicycle laws and I was on my way. I almost made it home without incident, just about eating it after getting a wheel caught in the streetcar tracks. I would recommend 21st Avenue Bicycles to anyone looking for a bike, or looking to comparison shop or with questions about bicycling.
