All the metal junk around the house and the garage was driving me crazy so i spent a few weekends putting them in piles. I put off going to the recycling place because I was a newbie and didn’t know how I would be treated. The previous reviews helped motivate me.
Eric and his staff were really helpful. They guided us to the big scale to dropp off the steel first. I kept calling it metal by mistake. They were very forgiving. Once we had the bulky stuff out of the way then we went to the main building and weighed the other stuff.
I like that photo id is required and they mail the check later to cut down on meth heads trying to make a quick buck by ripping people off. This might be standard practice but I am too new at this to know.
Overall, great experience. If it is your first time… they can tell and will work with ya! Oh, and we made a little over fifty bucks. I am happy with that.

So normally I make a big pile of junk around the house and in the spring time make a trip to the dump and pay them to take it. This time I had mostly metal scrap around one item being a old dryer that broke last year.
So I got the bright idea to try and recycle my pile that I had made instead of paying for someone to take it, if they at least took it for free I would be money ahead. So using Unilocal I found Calbag Metals down in NW Portland.
Well as it turns out I got enough money for my gas to get down there and lunch money, well worth my time. Good people down there, nice and friendly for an industrial place, I wasn’t expecting that.

Our material culture is a prodigious consumer of resources. Ideally we would like to recycle, reuse and upcycle things we are done with, rather them bury them, burn them or dump them into the ocean where we get our fish. Portland has great curbside recycling, but where do those items go? If you bring your non-​ferrous (not iron or steel) metals to Calbag, you will have a pretty good idea of where they go, because they are pros.
What’s a pro? Well they are conversant in classifying metal waste into categories like Barley, Cocoa and Dream, all specific grades of copper for recycling:

I usually just drop copper house wiring off for free, but they also buy metals, and will be sure it gets recycled. Same would be the case for aluminum, like storm windows without the glass.
Keep in mind this is an industrial facility, be safe and respect the workers.
