Hertz Rent A Car

My friend and I reserved an economical vehicle online for two days. When we arrived, we found out that they didn’t have any more cars besides a cumbersome minivan – and on top of that, our initial estimate at $ 46.00 was «changed» to $ 120.00! Outrageous!
The manager was dismissive, the online content deceptive, and overall service was terrible and ageist.
GO TO ENTERPRISE. (When we called in the day, they quoted us $ 26, no hidden fees.)

Picking up my car from this location was pretty straightforward. I was in-​and-​out within 10 minutes. The representative was friendly and he even pointed out about 9 places where the car was scratched — even spots that I had not noticed; this was an unexpected surprise. I would definitely rent from Hertz again.

I thought with Hertz because of their usually high prices that I would be in good hands. I made a call to Hertz 800 number several days after making the reservation through Orbitz, to ask Hertz some details about the reservation, and ended the call telling the rep (three times to make sure he would understand) that I would like to keep the reservation even though it was not directly out of the airport (which was the reason for the call). When I went to pick up the car (got a ride from family), I found out that Hertz had cancelled my reservation on that call. It took three calls to them to get them to reinstate the reservation because they (Hertz) told me there was nothing they could do about the cancelation and I was out of luck. Finally though, they did reinstate it, BUT by the time we got to the rental place after all the fuss calls and extra time in the car in rush hour traffic (the first address was incorrect due to Orbitz mistake on the address, Hertz said) guess what?! they had closed two minutes earlier, and told me that they had to leave because the computers shut down right at closing time anyway. So the desk clerk was GONE when we arrived two minutes after closing time, doors locked, dark inside. That is CRAZY that knowing we were rushing there (told them) that there is nothing they can do 2 minutes after closing time. I had to get a ride the next day there, and also missed my hotel for that night because I had no car to take me there or pick me up from the hotel in the morning. Yes, when I picked up my car that next afternoon the nice manager gave me a ¾th tank of gas, and that was nice, (but no car discount, just one day less cost since I had it one less day) and an upgrade to the very slightly bigger car (though still a very tiny economy car and not in the greatest shape– I usually get more of an upgrade (and free) when I use Dollar and no inconveniences to go with it), but I felt considering I had that much inconvenience I should have gotten more of a compensation because of all of the stress on myself and family members who had to help me through it with car accommodations, housing etc. That reservations should never have been cancelled (and by the way I received no confirmation email of the cancelation to alert me that it had been cancelled). Really thought that because Hertz’s prices are generally much higher that I would be in better hands, but turns out that the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is not always true in car rentals. In my experience, Dollar is much cheaper, the cars are great, and I have never had anything like this happen with them.

My Toyota Yaris rental had a flat when I found it in the parking lot after work. It was dark rainy and cold and there was no jack in the car (I know how to change a flat). I called the emergency road assistance number on the key. First they sent a locksmith ??, then an hour later a tow truck to change the flat. The person who changed the tire said there was a small screw that caused the flat. I never drove on it flat. When I returned it, I was charged $ 125.00 for a NEW TIRE!!. Never again. I used Hertz exclusively for 5 years when flying back and forth weekly to California, but my loyalty is over.

Was told I would be charged $ 2 /​day out of pocket after my insurance coverage for the Toyota yaris I rented. Had it for a total of 7 ½ days and got charged $ 24.38 (that math doesn’t add up) left it with a half a tank, of course they rake you over the coals in gas up charges $ 68.68 for a ½ tank. And was charged a deposit of $ 44 which didn’t get applied to any of the charges, or refunded. Terrible, I would never rent a car from them ever again. Should have gone with enterprise. Lesson learned.

We rented a car at this Hertz location through our insurance company while our car was being repaired. Arrangements were made by our insurance company and paid directly by them.
Really bad experience from the Hertz staff when I picked up the rental — particularly from the woman who checked me in. She proceeded to apply both high pressure and tricky comments to get me to add on their insurance and pay for their full tank of gas and return it «as empty as I’m comfortable with».
Yuck — she even tried to convince me that our standard, low-​end model Hyundai Sonata (with cloth, manual seats, etc) was a $ 38,000 car and that we better get their insurance to protect «her car».
They also refused to open their front gate 10 feet in front of the car for me to exit because of the danger of turning onto the street and made me back out of their lot for 50+ feet to exit (this was direction given by some rude, bald guy from the back office).
I was neutral on Hertz, but won’t ever rent from them again.

If you go here and are disabled, specifically almost deaf, better be sure to bring an interpreter or a friend with you so that you do not get conned into agreeing for upgrades of ANY KIND on a rental. The Associate was rushing through all the paperwork and DID NOT go over all of it in a way in which a disabled customer would understand in full. What really makes me angry is that at no time did the Hertz Associate give time or an option to go over the papers… it was just «sign here, here and here.» Consent was not given for the extra charges, why?, because the insurance company is paying for everything, not me. What this Hertz Associate did was con extra money out of a disabled person. $ 350 hold and wants to charge my account $ 95 for one day of having the rental, which, may I remind you is being payed for in FULL by my insurance company… not to mention that they already have the car back. This Hertz location has the most disrespectful staff I have ever encountered, even the manager, and totally refuses to give me the District Manager’s contact information. I will continue to never do business with Hertz from now on and will go with Enterprise instead as they have never failed me.
