Breed discrimination rears its ugly head, keeping gentle, friendly bullies and other breeds out of needed play — playtime is one of the things they need the most. Unfortunate shortsightedness.

First and foremost let me say that the owners of the Howliday Inn have NO problems with bully breeds. I should know, I worked for them for 14 years when they used to own a dog boutique on Hawthorne and then the Howliday Inn. When I worked at the Howliday Inn we ALWAYS accepted bully breeds (I personally own a Bully breed) IF THEY NO LONGER ACCEPT BULLY BREEDS PLEASE BE ASSURED THERE IS A VERY GOOD REASON! Yes, the saying is true «a few bad apples ruin it for the whole bunch» :(I have absolutely no doubt that it wasn’t heartbreaking for them to decide they could no longer accept bullies but, understand that their knowledge and compassion for bully breeds is very extensive. I am sad to see negative reviews for this reason and yes, I am sad they have had to make the decision not to accept bully breeds anymore but, this business is fantastic and the owners are absolutely wonderful. Sadly they cant be there ²⁴⁄₇ or I am sure they would still take your precious bully… They also have employees you know. They have to make the best decision for the dogs and employees in their care and in no way was this decision made lightly. :(

I’m glad to see that negatives about breed restrictions are allowed now. I posted one a couple of years ago that was removed because I had not used the service– even though I couldn’t. Catch-​22. Obviously the negatives about pitbulls come from people who know nothing about the breed. There are aggressive dogs of all breeds and that applies to pitbulls. Instead of allowing dogs in based on a behavioral assessment this place uses breed profiling where bully dogs are concerned. They may assess some breeds that have concerning breed characteristics but, unlike someone else’s comment, their approach is «mindless» where pits are concerned. I have a different dog now who is mostly sharpei with some pitbull. I know enough not to contact them even though I live very close.

I don’t support any business that doesn’t accept bully breeds or pitbulls.
Anyone who thinks that a dog is aggressive based on BREED is severely uneducated and close minded.
ANY dog can be aggressive. I’ve worked for multiple dog daycares/​boarding kennels and the most aggressive dogs are never the pitbulls or bullies.
The only people who discriminate against breeds are the ones who truly don’t know anything about dogs.

This place was recommended by a dog trainer and a doggie daycare employee who worked at other places. My dog loves people who work here and they manage to keep the dogs calm most of the time. For the Pitbulls, it costs more to have high risk dogs since needs more insurance. If the owners are not confident to have such dogs, why force it?

My dogs LOVE this place, and our older dog has been going off and on since he was a puppy and they were at the old location.
Regarding the breed ban: When we got our second dog, a mix of just about everything it seems, we brought her in for her evaluation day and this is how it went:
«Looks like she’s part Sharpei»
«Is that a problem?»
«We’ll see.»
There was clearly a potential concern with my dog’s behavior, but they were willing to take a chance. If they’d turned her down I would have understood. Everyone there obviously loves dogs and just as obviously has to make tough decisions to ensure the dogs they do take have a safe and happy environment.
So it’s not just a mindless breed ban; it’s a reasoned policy based on known traits of several breeds.

I don’t support bigotry towards people or dogs. Way to encourage the stereotypes Howliday Inn. You will not be getting my business, nor will you be getting any recommendations from our Veterinary Clinic. Get with the program, hire people who know can interpret dog interactions and screen based on temperament, not breed.

Our dog LOVES the Howliday Inn and so do we! We have been bringing him here since we rescued him in 2013 to give him more socialization. He loves his daycare days (yes he knows when they are) and we know he’s in good hands when we have to board him. He always comes home very happy and tired. Definitely recommended!

The only place I trust to watch my LOLA!!! From the beginning it was a great-​worry-​free environment! First they did a evaluation for a day and got a sense of how she behaved in «toy land» which are dogs under 10 lbs. The owners are so sweet and I trust them and their staff to take good care of Lola when I am out of town.
I love contributing to family owned businesses! Keep it up Howliday inn!
Ps I knew the negative reviews would be about «breed discrimination» I think the owners are doing exactly what they need to be doing to keep all the other doggy visitors safe, and I appreciate that!

Yes, very good. My dog loves this place and the employees. He never looks back when I drop him off, and he always come back to us happy. I am so happy that this place DOES NOT ACCEPT KNOWN AGGRESSIVE BREEDS. It makes leaving my wee dog there much less stressful. I know there are good dogs in the aggressive breeds, but as business, I can understand why the Howliday Inn can’t take a chance. I applaud them for thinking of the safety of others…

THANK YOU for not accepting KNOWN AGGRESSIVE BREEDS! People are entitled to like those breeds but giving a good business one star because they don’t accept a known aggressive breed is just petty because they aren’t even rating the business on anything other than that.
I am thankful the owners care enough to screen dogs who attend.
The place is a big room for dogs to run and play, with attendants right there with them, cleaning up constantly. They have a little outdoor patio area for the dogs as well, so there’s lots of fresh air and daylight. The overnight kennels are relaxing, dim, and clean. Out of all the places I scoped out, this seemed the most comfortable for overnight and the owners seem to really care about the dogs.
Prices are fair.

Sad about the fact that they discriminate against certain breeds. I will not give this place my business. Won’t support a business that doesn’t support my cause.

My dog loves this place. Let me make that clear MY DOG LOVES THIS PLACE. as a pup she would go crazy as we pulled up, we had a 7 year gap as we lived in Texas and had our first day back… guess what dog is the happiest dog ever today, mine.
We’ve gone to many dog boarding places over her 9 years and the difference here — big bed areas, big play areas and a safe environment.
Most places in Austin made you pay per 15 min play time, here it’s a like size play for all all day long. She comes home exhausted (and happy as a clam). Don and Pam, as well as the rest of the staff, are still super cool and love my dog too. I can’t say enough great about this place.
Side note, the folks citing being shocked by no pit bulls or pit mixes… please most places are this way. And frankly I feel safer for my dog they aren’t there. I have my reasons based on many experiences not media hype. I’m sure their dog is the exception…
But again, only place my dog has ever been crazy excited going to. Have to love it.

If I could give a business more than 5 stars I would! My dog Samson and I LOVE the Howliday Inn. Samson started going to the Howliday Inn when he was just 12 weeks old in 2010 for daycare and overnight boarding. Pam and Daniel and their staff (Jocelyn, manager) are amazing. They treated my dog as if he were their own. You could trust them with everything. It was such a relief to go on vacation and know your dog is ecstatic to be there. My dog would cry on the way there with excitement and literally drag me into the building. He was also exhausted when he was picked up after running around with all his doggy friends all day. I’m sad that I can no longer bring Samson there as we recently moved to the East coast. But, I would recommend them to anyone looking for a top notch daycare/​boarding facility to check them out. Awesome!

Wow, what a nice place to take your dog for a day of play! I am very happy with this place. The staff is super nice! The place is big clean and has an outside area for the dogs. The one thing that is missing is a web cam.

This is the first time in the 13 years that I have had my dog that I have ever experienced breed discrimination.
The Howliday Inn refused my dog for daycare based solely on the fact that he’s a pit bull. I called to make an appointment for a play day and they told me «we do not accept pit bulls.»
Unfortunately, the woman who I talked to at the Howliday Inn said that it’s commonplace in Portland. *Cringe* How about we judge beings by their character? This isn’t a new concept.
Real dog lovers love all breeds of dog. Shame on you Howliday Inn.

We’ve taken our dog here multiple times now, for both overnight boarding and day boarding. He loves it! He’s so excited to go in, and I’ve never been worried about his safety while he’s there. They seem to really care about the dogs, and my lab is completely worn out every time he comes home from day care. I definitely recommend them!

I just moved here from Orange County Ca. and needed to find a doggie daycare for my lil 5lb chihuahua. When I came in for our evaluation, the Owners Daniel and Pam were so sweet, friendly and very very attentive. Their calm and comforting demeanor really made me comfortable as I was a bit hesitant to leave my dog at any daycare cuz he is so small. Seeing and hearing how much the Owners are involved and the love and care that you can just see from them and their staff really makes this place stand out afar from all the other doggy daycare’s.
They gave me a tour and I was even more relieved to see that they have a designated area for small dogs, which they call Toy Land lol!!!
We went through the boarding facility and its very quaint and seems very relaxing for a doggie hotel. Nice dim lighting, very clean and classical music playing! They showed me the daycare area and ITS HUGE!!! It has a cute lil patio area and it was so cute to see alot of the dogs out there sun bathing.
My lil one comes very frequently now and he always falls asleep in the car after I come pick him up. I highly recommend this place to everybody!!! See you guys next week!!!

We have been bringing our 8 month old chocolate lab here for about 5 months. We love it there and so does our pup!
Our pup is ALWAYS super excited to go there and is tired from playing all day when she is done.
The staff is very nice and attentive and they always remember me or my wife when we come in and know which pup is ours. They are also good at responding to emails when you have questions.
I highly recommend Howliday Inn for your dogs day care and boarding!

Howliday Inn’s attentive care to our dogs, Tedbear and Guinness, is priceless. Owners, Daniel and Pam and everyone who works at Howliday Inn are as sweet and caring as can be, not to mention truly knowledgeable not only about how to care for dogs, but about our dogs, specifically! They can recount what happened during the day, and are incredibly warm and friendly to us owners.
Our dogs skip (and bark) into Howliday Inn at least twice a week for daycare (and don’t look back!), and every time we leave, we know we’re leaving them in good hands.
We feel so grateful to have found Howliday Inn, thanks to Unilocal,and we recommend it very highly! This is care with soul. :)
