Rick’s Frozen Custard

Didn’t know what to expect from this place but I left pleasantly surprised. I got the vanilla and chocolate custard and brownies, which was so good and rich. There was enough custard to serve 3 people. My coworkers both got ice cream in a waffle cone. all of our orders came out to less than $ 9.
The service was great and quick. The quality of the custard and brownies was good to.
Next time I am in the area, I will be sure to check this place out again. Loved it.

Rick’s is truly a summer treat. The custard is delicious, and very well-​priced! The venue itself lends itself to feelings of nostalgia; a small dessert store with outdoor seating and a bench swing, it’s quite the quaint shop. Parking has never been an issue for either.

Delicious… tastes homemade. I have only been twice so far, but wonderful each time. Staff has been friendly and nice, no complaints. 5 stars for taste and quality!

Another bookmark checked off! Since I was making a detour home, I remembered this shop being near by to where I was stuck at. I was able to find this little charm pretty easy because of the big ice cream cone off the street. I looked over the menu and settled for the chocolate dipped custard cone. Pretty good price! It was a soft serve texture and the chocolate gave it that awesome crunch. This ice cream did not make my tummy hurt, since I am lactose intolerant I was nervous eating it BUT no problema over here, so I will be making more frequent detours home to Rick’s!

Where I come from in Maine, there are ice creams stands all over the place – at least during the summer. Here in Hamptons Roads, however, it can be difficult to find them. There are numerous FroYo businesses every time you turn around, but ice cream stands –or frozen custard– are few and far between. That’s when I was so excited to find about Rick’s Frozen Custard (RFC) in Portsmouth on Airline Blvd. After three visits, I’m starting to become addicted to this place, so I owe them a review.
Do you know where Frozen Custard was invented? Coney Island, New York back in 1919! Frozen Custard is similar to ice cream except that eggs are added to the regular cream and sugar. Not only does it make the texture smoother, it makes it stay cold longer. There’s your new bit of information today!
RFC is a cool and interesting building – you can only walk-​up to the window or go use the drive-​thru. I think the drive-​thru is awesome, but I doubt I will use it. For me, it’s all about the experience – walking up to the window, ordering my favorite dessert, and sitting outside to soak up the atmosphere. All of the tables are outside under a covered pavilion, and my favorite is the swinging chair – so relaxing while eating my treat.
The menu consists of cones (or a dish), sundaes, and concretes – their concretes are custard with toppings added in. My favorite so far has been their Strawberry Shortcake Sundae – amazing! (OMG! Factor) I can’t believe with their prices. For example: a small cone is $ 1.50, a Strawberry Shortcake Sundae is $ 3.25, and an «All Shook Up» concrete is $ 3.25. Compared to FroYo places, I find RFC to be a steal.
I love RFC (if you could tell) and I highly recommend you visit them. Order a Strawberry Shortcake Sundae and eat it on the swinging chair. You’ll be happy you did.

My daughter was wanting some sweets so we made our way over to ricks. We opted for the drive thru because I had a sleeping toddler in the back. The drive thru took about 15 minutes for me to reach the window. I ordered a BBQ sandwich and a cup of vanilla custard with pound cake for me and my daughter ordered a plain hotdog and a cup a chocolate custard. The BBQ was amazing I was not expecting that at all maybe a sub par cookout BBQ but no, I was truly taken aback by how delicious this was. The vanilla custard is always delicious but the pound cake was a little dry. My daughter liked everything she had. For all under 10 $ we will be back.

I have been coming to Uncle Rick’s for such a long time now, easily 20 years or so. They actually have a sister location in Newport News on Jefferson — I’m not sure if that location is still open, though. But, on with the review.
This is such a cute little place. I just love frozen custard, not to the point that I have to have it all the time (I don’t like any frozen dessert like that except Mrs. Smith’s Frozen Pies) but when I have a taste for it, I will drive across town and get some. I usually get the FUDGE ANA which is custard with banana slices smothered in hot fudge and nuts topped with whipped cream and a cherry :) I get it with EXTRA FUDGE (I sure do!) and I always go through the drive thru. Lots of teenagers work here and I’ve never had a problem with the service or the food quality. I think I might stop by there today and let that hot fudge warm my fat soul. Best frozen custard I’ve had, check it out if you’re in the neighborhood!

I live in CA, and will miss this place. I could go everyday it’s so tasty. I like the variety of choices, without it being overwhelming. The concretes and sundaes and chocolate dipped are all excellent and just wish I could have tried everything. I felt like the prices are more than fair and made for a decent treat.
The outdoor seating is nice, but it was so cold when we went we opted for the car. We did eat once outside.
I can’t wait to come back and this place will be on my go to list.

We love this place. It’s usually busy, but totally worth the wait. Their concretes are good & their large cones are huge! Yum!

I had a wicked craving for dessert, so I drug my husband with me to Uncle Rick’s. Our sundaes were ok, nothing special. But they were very inexpensive so I liked that! When I was ordering/​waiting for our food (and my credit card), the teenage girl who was working the walk up window, was only concerned about one thing… the teenage boys who were visiting her. The customer service I received was just horrible. But man, let me tell you, those boys were getting plenty of attention from her. When she gave me my credit card back she gave me the receipt copy that you usually need to sign. I had to ask her 3 times before getting a response if I needed to sign it. This is because she was not giving me eye contact (even though I was standing right in front of her). Her eyes were on the boys the whole time. From this experience alone, I will not be coming back. It’s annoying to be treated that way and not worth my money.

I only eat ice-​cream a couple times a year and when I do, I go to Uncle Ricks. It is the very best that I have ever had for frozen custard. The prices are awesome and the servings are plentiful. You must try it if you have to even drive a long distance. Get a hotel and plan a weekend trip and try out Ricks :)

Keep in mind this is custard not ice cream. They have a lot of toppings available for sundaes, concretes, smoothies, etc., but the custard flavors are chocolate, and vanilla. For a limited time they have strawberry.
They don’t really have bike racks, but the only seating is outdoors, so your bike won’t be out of your sight. The seating is well covered, and they do have a drive thru.
This place is great for an inexpensive treat.

Worst customer service experience of my life.
I attempted to get frozen custard for the family this evening as I pulled into the parking lot at approximately 9pm. I waited in the drive through line for 4 or 5 cars to place their orders and be served. The minivan in-​front of me had a rather large order that took nearly 10 minutes to complete. Finally as I approach the window after approximately 20 minutes I’m informed that the establishment closed «right before I pulled in».
I’ve been a customer for years and enjoy the custard but to let someone wait in line for over 20 minutes and not serve them is ridiculous. If you want to close the drive-​thru send someone out and put a cone or closed sign up after the last car you have decided to serve. From looking at other’s posts it seems this is a recurring problem. It’s going to take a formal apology for me to ever spend a cent here or recommend this place to anyone again.

Yummy frozen custard! We enjoy all of the options, but loooove the hot fudge Sunday! Clean tables, great service and great prices! For new patrons, the menu could be a little confusing so that’s my reason for the ⁴⁄₅ stars.

Love this place! The concretes are amazing and they have so many different choices for flavors and candies. Love the turtle! They do a pretty good job with staffing, and I’ve never had to wait «too long».

We like frozen custard. Found this place when we moved back to the area a few years ago. They make the ‘concrete’ which is a base flavor and toppings mixed in. You can also just get a flavor and toppings on top. It’s all outdoors, but they have a drive through. We hadn’t been in awhile and I will say this last visit the custard was different. More air perhaps? But we like the outdoor feel, and the staff are all very friendly. Mostly teens.
We aren’t as close to this place as before, so don’t go as often. But if we like it. I just hope we had an off day this last visit or I will change my review. Until now it’s been amazing!

I’ve had frozen custard all
over the USA and I would say Uncle Rick’s is average. It had too much air in my humble opinion.
However, it was good, the custard stand is very clean and the employees were super nice. You can’t beat the price either! Great Bargain for families.
