I’m seriously bummed. A friend from Wakefield who came to McCurdy’s with me once has been dying to go back, and we made plans for last night. After a frantic beer run to Madeira’s, we got to McCurdy’s around 6:30pm and the door was locked. We looked around to the window where the open sign is, and there was a sign that said«Gone Fishin.» Their facebook page had this message: «Sadly, McCurdy’s Junction House has closed it’s doors. We enjoyed feeding you all… Thank you very much» That sucks! Ever since this place opened and I fell in love with it, I have been eating there as often as I can afford just to help keep them going. I don’t know what the combination of circumstances made them close their doors, but I wish they would reconsider.

I’ve been to McCurdy’s a few times now, and everytime I leave I’m underwhelmed. I really like what they’ve done with the place(definitely an asthetic improvement to Wings/King to Go), and their menu is fantastic on paper but every time I get my food, it’s just not as good as it could be. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but it’s never as good as I imagine it being — like when you use your grandma’s cookbook and it just doesn’t taste as good as you remember. I am glad to see they have real silverware and dishes now — the plastic was a huge turnoff.

I still don’t know quite how I feel about this place. On the positive side, our servers were super friendly and the menu was kind of interesting(gotta love a place that serves a Thanksgiving turkey dinner all year round). Also, as everyone else has mentioned: BYOB! I had the portobello sandwich, which was only ok. It didn’t have a lot of flavor, and my bread was stale. BUT, the roasted carrots that came on the side were awesome. I would eat those any day of the week. I also tried my dining companion’s fish and chips, which were decent, but not exactly a reason to come here(especially since you can get pretty much the same dish at almost every restaurant in Providence). The décor is a little bit too holly hobby for my taste, and I don’t understand who would ever want to sit in that weird closet turned«private» dining area. Also, as I was waiting in line for the bathroom, I have to admit, the place felt a little bit dirty to me. Still, I might be back if only to try the turkey dinner…

This place rules. BYOB and awesome food(particularly the appetizers). Some noteworthy delicious apps: Sweet Potato Pancakes Fried Goat Cheese The Chicken Wings(can’t remember what they actually call them) The Beef Soup(again, I don’t remember what they call it) I enjoy the red lightbulbs and the yard-sale picked random furniture also.

For a vegan, this is a so-so place. There were a few vegan options but nothing was spectacular. I had the portobello sandwich which wasn’t listed as vegan but can be made vegan. It was pretty good. My wife had the vegan polenta which I thought was terribly plain and was better suited for breakfast. So… The price tag on the polenta was far too much for what it was. My sandwich was appropriately priced at around $ 9 or something. Also– this place is BYOB. If you’re vegan, I would suggest only going here if you’re with a bunch of carnivores NOT on a vegan date.

They are only open on Fridays for lunch and I happen to have lunch there before. The decorating is very homey feeling with the kitchen tables and what not. This establishment is about a year old I believe and it’s owned by a family, a man and his son work the kitchen for example. We met the owner and he was very friendly. The restaurant doesn’t server alcohol, however, they are a BYOB(bring your own bottle) place! I had a cup of clam chowder and a chicken caesar salad for my meal. The chowder was good, different than what I was used to but it was tasty. The chicken was cooked nicely and I was surprised with the amount of salad I was given, it was quite large. The dressing was ‘okay’, it wasn’t amazing but decent. I would suggest them to either serve less of a amount of salad or different plating. They put the dressing on the side and I made a mess trying to mix it into with my salad. The person I went with ordered a different kind of soup, which they said tasted good and also got a different kind of salad that they absolutely loved. It was the spinach salad. I was surprised when looking at the menu, their sandwiches for example are different than a regular pub style place. It’s all homemade cooking, you get open faced turkey sandwiches which sounded very good.

I’ve heard of this place before, but I always thought it was a bar with the typical bar fare. When a group of friends invited me out for dinner, that’s what I expected, but what I got instead was a cute, quirky, little BYOB restaurant with a menu full of comfort food at a reasonable price. Each piece of the puzzle was a great surprise. My favorite part of the décor was the mismatched chairs — just like my home. We started by sharing the stuffies and fried goat cheese. Both were savory and tasty. Now I do have to say that I have never tried a stuffy before, so I can’t be a judge of this in comparison to other places, but I was satisfied. I ordered a cup of the beef stew and a small salad with the balsamic dressing(house made) for my entrée and while that might seem like too little for a meal, with the 2 apps, it was the perfect amount. My favorite dish was the beef stew. Warm, hearty, and tasty stew served over mashed potato was perfect for a winter’s day. The servers were friendly and helped each other out with our orders, something that you don’t always see, but I liked. The vibe of the place and the servers matched. There were some great specials, and I will echo the other reviewers in the nice surprise of a fair amount of vegetarian dishes. One of my friends ordered the butternut squash cornucopia and seemed to enjoy it. This place will definitely go on my list of places to frequent with out of town guests.

*EDIT* I was a little disappointed tonight when I tried to go to McCurdy’s and they said we needed reservations for dinner on the weekends. There were like… 5 empty tables and we couldn’t be seated. Shouldn’t there be tables set aside for people without reservations? I feel like places that require reservations are always a little uppity, and that totally wasn’t the vibe I initially had from McCurdy’s. For that reason, I had to demote my review from 5 to 4 stars. *EDIT* I just tried the good ol’ junction house for the FIRSTTIME this week and could not BELIEVE I have been driving past this place for months without ever going in. Part of me wants to lie and give this place a bad review to keep it as one of providence’s best kept secrets. But alas, I can’t lie! I must spread the wholesome heartiness that is this fine establishment. It has such an unassuming exterior – almost dumpy looking on the outside – which is why I never quite ventured my way in until now. But once you open that door, there’s a beautifully decorated interior with bright festive table cloths and a homey eclectic mix of tables and chairs. MOREOVER, the food is just all-around good. Portions are enormous for a reasonable price, the menu selection is extremely diverse but carefully planned to match the season, and food preparation is clean, crafted, and wonderfully seasoned. It was just such a satisfying dinner all around. McCurdy’s Junction House is honest, wholesome goodness. Maybe McCurdy was an Irish American saint. And by wholesome, I mean BYOB.

Is it possible to subtract a star for TOO much great food? It probably is but to do so would be to do this excellent restaurant a gross disservice. Located slightly off the beaten path on the corner of Ives and Wickenden, there’s nothing in particular about McCurdy’s unassuming exterior or homey, cozy yet spacious interior that hints at a wonderful dining experience. This all radically changes when the entrees are served. The winter menu was fairly diverse(lots of pulled pork and chicken but each prepared with interesting nuances), meaning that my friends and I all chose something different from our typical new restaurant choices(meaning for me, something other than a burger). I chose one of the specials: a bbq chicken sandwich served with slaw and a side of mac and cheese. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Wrong. It’s one thing to have a meal add up to be greater than the sum of its parts but when each individual component of the dish(from the crispy, garlic flavored bread, to the out of this world slaw, to the creamy mac and cheese) is in and of itself so high above par then you know you have something special going on. Wait, did I mention that this delicious, probably should have taken a box home-sized meal was less than $ 10? For once, everything in moderation is not the ideal — this place takes quality and value(not to mention excellent service) to the extreme. Do yourself a favor, check it out. Remember, BYOB.

Am I the only one who finds the name completely unappetizing? I expected railroad theme, or possibly a grungey truck stop diner or maybe a dairy farm. Instead I wandered into a wiccan grandmother’s wide-open living room. The tables are awkwardly arranged around the room, including one secret table for two in a closet and the to-go bench cramped up next to the kitchen. The hostess table is also hidden away so when you walk in you really do feel like you’ve stumbled into someone else’s dinner. Service was ok given there was one waitress/hostess for the whole room. But I am def not a big fan of finding out a place is BYOB and without diet soda after I’ve already sat down thirsty. The menu did have 2 or 3 vegan options(not as many as we’d expected) but everything was kinda … eh. Nothing that I was dying to eat. I will say the BBQ tofu had some of the best BBQ sauce I’ve tasted in a while — not too catsupy or sweet. And I guzzled my squash/apple soup — perfect for a frigid day. I appreciate this place serves as a neighborhood spot to dine or takeout, and maybe I’ll give it another chance during another season to see if the menu improves.

Beautiful, delicious, friendly, and small. This tiny little restaurant has an interesting menu full of seasonal, unique and reasonably priced dishes. From butternut squash and apple soup, scrumptious salads, vegetarian dishes, steaks and even fish and chips on the weekend, there is something for everyone. I was surprised that they even had a large selection of sandwiches for the patron on a budget. We arrived on a Friday evening and the place was relatively empty. To our chagrin they said that all of the tables were reserved, but they happily put us on the waiting list. Within fifteen minutes(and a trip to the Madeira liquors, as they are byob!) we were sat at a lovely table for two. I ordered the grilled bbq pork loin sandwich and my friend ordered the sam adams battered fish and chips, which are only available on Fridays and Saturdays. My sandwich was phenomenal. The pork loin was grilled to perfection, was complimented by crispy thick pieces of bacon, and smothered in cheddar and yummy bar-b-que sauce. So very good. Not to mention it came with a side of the best damn mac and cheese I have ever put in to my gob. My friend said that his fish and chips were quite good too and came with a side of salt and pepper fries that were quite scrumptious. The place is quite charming in a distinct burgundy color scheme and wooden tables. They also have a faux fireplace(an interesting touch). I suppose it is easier to manage than the wood burning or gas type. I would recommend making reservations on their busier nights to avoid having to wait The service was stellar and friendly. FYI, they do charge a two dollar fee for BYOB per table if you bring wine or beer.

These guys get better every time I go. They have a seasonal menu(wait… what? a take out place with a seasonal menu!?). All their dishes are wonderful. They serve a fantastic mix of gourmet and pure comfort food. You could not get nicer service. The sit down table service is great and somewhat new, but they blow any other casual dining establishment around right out of the water. I give them my highest praise.

If I was basing this review solely on food, McCurdy’s would get 4 stars, but the service bumps them down to 3. Stopped in with two other people for lunch, and it was not busy, there was only one other table occupied. The menu had lots of interesting choices and we ended up ordering 2 salads and a sandwich. Then we waited, and waited. It took over 30 minutes for us to get our food. During lunch. When there was only one other table in the place… we were all late getting back to work. When we did get the food, it was very good. Everything seemed very fresh and was tasty. The place itself is small, but feels very homey, like you are walking into someone’s living room. I am not sure if I will ever return to McCurdy’s.

Exceptional find. Try the Buffalo Tofu appetizer great texture and flavor. The Salt Brined Pork Chops and Steak Asiago are my favorites. Make sure to order the seasonal vegetables. So good you will eat here twice a week. Another benefit is that is is a brown bag take your own beer and wine restaurant. Package store a short walk down the street. It dosent get much better!

Menu is limited but everything… I mean everything, we’ve had there has been outstanding. If you’re into gravy try the meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes. Amazing. Oh, and it’s BYOB too. Plus plus.

Great, new restaurant. If you are looking for warm, home-style cooking this is the place to go. They have excellent options for vegans and meat eaters alike. I have yet to sit inside and have a meal(usually get takeout), but the atmosphere inside is warm and welcoming. It’s a great place to byob and escape with some friends during these cold winter nights.

This place is a bit of an enigma. Nice interior décor, well-thought out menu with some nice variety, but an obsession with being primarily take-out. Three of us went to dinner and sat in. The woman who took our order didn’t know anything about gluten and wasn’t very helpful — she also forgot to bring us our water. We got our food quickly(to be expected); we had polenta with sausage, polenta with tofu, and a portabello ‘burger’. Unfortunately it was all medicore — looked and tasted like reheated leftovers, and the burger came on stale bread. The plastic dinnerware was a big turn-off for eating in — is it really that hard to have a few real plates and silverware? I’m giving it three stars instead of less for the interesting menu, inside décor, and potential.

We really, really wanted to like this place. We may have had unrealistic expectations walking in, so it is a «maybe try again». But, no rush. True: good food(not great, and not as many veggie options as we expected based on reviews), at extremely affordable prices. True: BYOB — picked up a great bottle of Cote du Rhone from Campus Fine Wines on the way over. Be prepared for: Plastic. A lot of plastic. Our food was brought to us in jointed plastic containers, with 2 plastic plates and two sets of pre-wrapped plastic cutlery. Be prepared to: Drink out of Styrofoam. We arrived, there were two tables occupied. Granted, one of them was a larger party, but they had run out of all but one wine glass and a collectible china mug. A mug o’ wine. This probably would have been funny had we gone out for a pre-dinner drink, or two or three. However, they are new– supposedly this was the first time they had run out of glasses, but we still got water(after stepping up to the counter to order it) in Styrofoam cups. Be deliberate where you sit! It is not a huge seating area, and some of the décor is really cozy and groovy, but we also had a prime view of the trash bins and brightly lit kitchen from our seats. Based on other’s reviews, we were expecting something else. To reiterate: we may go back, but it will probably be for take-out.

Cute little place. Makes it’s home where King’s To Go and Wings To Go used to be — right across the street from the Fox Point Library. Their menu is varied — they a little something for everyone — vegetarians, vegan, GF, or even your established carnivore. The Portabella open-faced sandwich was extravagant — I can hardly bring myself to order anything else. The folks here were lovely and McCurdy’s is a great addition to Ives Street.
