We visit Redding often and eagerly looked forward to a time we could visit Jacks. We both love old school places and were in love with the hype of this place. *Sigh.* Granted, we should have ordered differently. But that isn’t what the three stars are about. If I am going to drop $ 25 to $ 40 on a steak dinner, I expect a few things. First, I expect some atmosphere. If you are going to go old school, then dump the red vinyl and black metal chairs and find some used wooden chairs to use. The tables and chairs don’t have to match, but they should be aesthetically pleasing. And comfortable. Dump the new neon in the bar. It is tacky. The place us just… ugly. Fine, if I am doing a quick and cheap meal, but no good if I am spending serious dinner money. There seems to be a secret menu, as the lady in front of me had creamed spinach– I kind of like the idea of regulars having some kind of special treatment. We both ordered the Jack’s Stack. I like the idea– good meat, variety, value. However, I should have noted that I don’t like gravy over my meal. The meat was good, and there was lots of it, but I just wasn’t interested in eating it. I think I enjoyed the salad more. All in all, we probably won’t go back. If I want ugly atmosphere and acceptable food, I can find that for a lot less money.

I can’t find anything wrong with Jack’s — they know what they do well and they do it every night consistently. The service is on point and the drinks well made — they’re stiff but it’s what you want when you go to Jack’s.

One of our favorites. Birthdays, anniversaries, special celebrations all end up here at the best old style steakhouse ever. Best food, salad and cocktails in Redding.

Reputation is deserved. A bit dark but I’ve never had anything but great steaks.

This place is amazing. Wonderful vibes as soon as you enter the building, and extremely attentive service. I really enjoy and recommend the blue cheese dressing for the salad, it is delicious and they bring you all you can handle. Excellent cuts of meat, and the prices you would expect for a high quality steak meal. You won’t be disappointed.

This place is pretty great. Not fancy, not well-lit, but they know how to treat a steak, the service is friendly and attentive, and the bartender(apparently) knows every drink by heart. There is no official cocktail menu; just ask for what you want. Our steaks were cooked the way we like them and quite nice. And one would hope so, because there are about two dishes on the menu that don’t involve a steak of some sort. Jack’s also does not skimp on the toppings. Every leaf and bean in the salad was absolutely coated in blue cheese dressing(which, for me, is preferred), and our baked potatoes came with dishes piled high with chive sour cream and butter. I’m one of those weirdos who likes a glass of milk as well as a cocktail and this is where my only complaint lies. I don’t know if the milk was old or if it was the brand, but there was a definite flavor of old fridge in the glass. Other than that, I was very happy.

First of all, one should know, this is more of a bar than a restaurant. It is very small and old fashioned. Very old fashioned. It is also very dark. So dark that there is a little flashlight attached to the bill to see where to sign. We were seated quickly and our orders were taken quickly. The menu is small. Most meals consist of steak, potato and salad, which is completely fine with me. It was the reason I visited. Even though I was born in Redding, I live 100 miles south but had only heard good things about the sizzling steaks at Jack’s. After our order was taken, the drinks came out quickly as the bar was about 6 feet away. However, it was over one full hour before we were even spoke to again by an employee. During this time, through the neon, a casual glance into the corner under the front window revealed a nasty German cock-roach. Although, it was apparent the bug was dying, it didnt make the visit very appealing. Having once owned a restaurant, I know the constant battle it is to keep pests at bay. We were already eating what turned out to be fabulous steaks, but the wonder is if the critters are in the front, it is likely they are in the kitchen too. I didnt want to make any sort of scene, so when the waitress came back I motioned for her to come closer to whisper and point out the visitor who was still in his final death throws. She bent down to look closer, but said nothing and walked away, taking our check back with her. I thought maybe she was going to credit us something for our«inconvenience» of having to dine with the German. She quickly returned and the check remained as it was. I didnt expect any discount really. I just thought they would at least pick the little guy up! - My suggestion– If they do nothing at all else… please clean. They obviously know how to perfectly grill a New York

Jack’s is a must try if you live in Redding. Great Steaks, that usually come out Rare or Very rare no matter how you order them. The steak will come out seared with great flavor and juicy meat inside. I love their home made blue cheese salad dressing and the bartender has a heavy hand.

I will keep this short & simple. The hotel I was staying at in Redding, naturally suggest ‘Jacks’ over ‘Cattleman’s’ for a great steak. It was Halloween(Last Saturday) & my friend and I were greeted with praise & all of the crap that does not matter… We sit at the bar(while waiting), I had probably the best Beefeater’s Martini I have ever had. However the bartender ignored most of the guest seated next to me… L and I order a NY strip & the largest Filet they had on their menu, Salads are delivered… fine… okay, but we both received suspiciously looking similar steaks… They were sir loins(tough & not what we ordered… My main ‘Beef’(if you will) was the fact that our sever lied to us & tried to pass them off as a filet @ NewYork(instead of saying she made a mistake! The strange thing is, another server concurred that my steak was not a filet. We just got out of there! What a dump! AVOID this place!!!

Had the 16oz top sirloin medium rare. The steak was cooked to perfection and had some great flavor. Garlic bread was very good as well as the baked potato. The salad was the one weak point. It had too much dressing. But, overall the service was good and the food was delicious.

We’re from out of town, and came to Jack’s based on the great Unilocal reviews. The food and service we had was as advertised — a real step back in time, but very good and large portions. Then my daughter noticed a cockroach crawling towards me. I crushed it, it made a good crunch, and continued to eat. Yes, it was a little gross, but I didn’t feel like it was time to freak out. The building was built in 1938, so I wasn’t totally surprised. When our waitperson came, I very quietly let her know that there was a squished cockroach under my chair. She said that they haven’t had one in the dining room in a while, and for sure the kitchen is clean. Fair enough. Check please! I’m from the SF Bay Area, and I was a little surprised that there was absolutely no accommodation on the bill for our cockroach encounter. I have multiple stories from friends where a cockroach encounter in the Bay Area has resulted in some sort of discount on the bill. So I obviously felt no compunction to pay a full tip.

Jacks is a redding landmark expect very low lights, great steaks, and the best wet salad with blue cheese dressing. After having my baby I couldn’t wait for medium rare beef and a margarita. Jacks never disappoints from the garlic bread to the crust on the steaks. We got a side of breaded shrimp and the batter was crisp but not greasy with great flavor. Favorite special occasion spot in redding.

Best steak in Redding. Great atmosphere. Walking through the door sometimes feels like walking in to an old movie(maybe a cool mafia film?) and you can already tell that this place has history. It’s quirky, comfy and classy all at the same time. Don’t come here expecting a healthy green salads or a big fancy menu. This place is meat-and-potatoes(literally), and it’s awesome. They do have a couple non-steak options, which are delicious. But it’s hard to resist the tender, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth steaks, cooked to perfection. I also love the salad(although I understand it might no be what some expect). Shredded lettuce and cooked green beans SMOTHERED in dressing(always pick blue cheese). It’s like what I always wished salad would be as a kid. Simple. Genius. Extra tips: –These people are serious about their meat. If you are used to ordering rare/med rare, you might be more comfortable with medium here. –Baked potato=generous bowl of BUTTER + sour cream and chives -«the jack stack» is great. Because gravy

Pros: — We got seated right away. — Waitress was a very hard-working employee, and very attentive. — For some reason, I didn’t mind the small, jam-packed atmosphere in there. And, apparently many families don’t mind it either. — My bf’s steak was great. I tried a bit. It was an enormous cut of meat. I am not much for red meat but I regret not ordering it. — The baked potato, which was served with butter pads and a pre-made sour cream and chives mix, was very good. That’s what got me through the dinner and ensured that I did not walk away hungry. Cons: — All beverages come from the bar. Even soft drinks(they have coke and sprite only). So, the wait staff can’t just pour the beverages themselves, or give you a refill if you want one. — The fried chicken, priced at a whopping $ 18.95, was fried skin and bones. There was like 1% meat on four large pieces. KFC’s chicken is worlds better than this. — Salad was drenched in dressing. That is, the iceberg lettuce was drenched. There were no other vegetables in the salad. I loved that it was served in a plastic bowl and that the waitress dished up the first serving for us though… very touching! But jeez, throw in a few tomatoes — No dessert offerings.

Great old school steakhouse with good portions. I took some home for lunch the next day. I love it when I have to travel to Redding for work because it gives me an opportunity to come back to Jack’s

Jack’s, you should be ashamed of yourself for not making an exception to your no reservation rule with the young man from Make a Wish. Your restaurant was the ONLY disappointment for this young man’s special Make a Wish, wish. SHAMESHAMESHAME on you. This young man is battling cancer and instead of helping, you added to his stress on his magical evening. On top of that you were rude. There is NO excuse to be rude, in this situation. PERIOD! This is my fav go to place in Redding but I will never eat here again and I will tell everyone I know to boycott this establishment. Karma…
