So my wife, father in law, and I decided to give this place a try after seeing the reviews on here and we stopped by cause we were in the neighborhood. It began when we walked into the gas station and off to the left a bit to enter the food/dinning side of the business. As I approached the counter I was greeted by a curtain of flies buzzing around. I thought… Ok, i’m with my family and I started getting that feeling I do when I have kinda committed to eating somewhere and notice I really don’t want to, but don’t want to be objective or seem stuck up so I went ahead and approached the counter. This is where it went south. There were two gentlemen working the counter. One dressed acceptably and one in a dirty black t-shirt and jean shorts. They both seemed nice enough and the one that was dressed a bit more on the professional side seemed to be being trained by the other gentleman who made it clear early on that he was«not the manager». As I do whenever I approach an establishment I started looking around at the overall cleanliness of a prospective eatery. This place was very unsat. The cutting boards had large gouges in them that were filled with whatever it was but looked as if someone had colored them in with black sharpie. The board being used to make sandwiches on was also filthy and promptly being scraped off with a dirty dough scraper that was placed back on the board, without being cleaned off and/or sanitized. Most of the pans on line were covered but the ones that were uncovered barely had any product in them and the condiments had a dried ring of what looked to be a mayo and mustard blend they were using. and then it was onto our sandwiches. When I asked about different specifications or stock levels of different products the answers were very unsure and unaware. They were not sure how things were made or if they had certain kind of breads. This made me feel as if these gentlemen were very unprepared at about 12:45 pm. The bread did look great, but was being kept in what appeared to be plastic trash bags. Not the most aesthetically pleasing storage container but effective, sterile, and better than having flies landing on your bread all day right? Well IF a piece of high protein meat or cheese was to drop off a dirty hand/glove into such an environment as a bag closed up with the amount of moisture bread gives off if would harbor bacterial growth like none other. As my suspicions continued I took a glance at the meat slicer that was visible from my side of the counter. It was ABSOLUTELYFILTHY! Caked bits of meat that were definitely not from just being used. The slicer was totally dry and put up. It was surly not being used currently as they were pulling pre-portioned deli meats out of the deli counter with the gouges and sharpie on the board. At this point I should have just stopped everything, I was so torn, I thought lets just get through this and we will throw away the sandwiches. Id rather throw 20.00 in the trash than embarrass my father in law. Anyway while I was noticing the slicer my father in law and wife got to order. Myself and children did not. Why? you might ask, because on top of the cleanliness issues, it took them so long just to make two(2) sandwiches we literally ran out of time. The employee wearing the T-shirt was taking a phone order while the one helping us out was asking him questions about every other step during the process of our order. The employee helping us out scraped the rest of the crusty ring of gelatinous blend of mayo mustard off the side of the insert and spread it onto my wife’s turkey sandwich and asked the other where the back up was. He answered there was no more prepared. So squeeze bottles of each were retrieved from the fridge under the deli counter. Unfortunately the tips of the mustard bottle had not been cleaned off in so long that the guy could only get product to shoot out of two of the three that the bottle had. They ran out of leaf lettuce, which was also not backed up, and were fishing out the last few tomato and pickles from the juice in the bottom of the pans. In fact not one product on the line really screamed fresh to me accept the lettuce they brought out toward the end of our experience. After the two sandwiches were done my family all went outside and I could not help myself. I told them I would be right out and I approached the counter. I asked the taller gentlemen with glasses on that was doing the instructing if I could speak with him for a minute. I preceded to bring all my concerns to his attention. I asked him if he had a sani-bucket. He said he did and I recommended he keep it where the public could see it to assure them that the place was being sanitized. I then told him about the cutting boards looking so bad and the possibility of cross contamination with the dirty slicer. He told me the manager of the place is the only one that is allowed to use the slicer and he was not allowed to. Poor standards to set. Gotta go.
