Pirate’s Pizza

Hoisting the hefty box off the counter at Pirate’s, I couldn’t help but wonder just what we’d gotten ourselves into.
I’d seen photos online, but hadn’t ever encountered one of these in real life. The box seemed to be bursting at the seams, barely containing what was inside. I was honestly afraid. These mythical beasts have a reputation for being large and in charge, and somewhat intimidating to most people, so we decided to leave it in the box until we got it home.
As it would turn out, all that build up was hardly necessary. What I thought was something dangerous turned out to be something to be admired and eaten! The box had a really heavy pizza inside, covered from edge to edge in copious amounts of ooey, gooey mozzarella, rich red sauce, very large pepperoni, and a towering crust!
Turns out, as usual, the pics on Unilocal don’t lie. This pizza lived up to each and every one of them. That said, it could’ve been better. One easy fix is in this Pro-​Tip: Ordering your pie well done is good move. It’ll guarantee your pie is piping hot when you get it home and all that melty cheese will be nice and crusty on top, and melty beneath.
The reason for three stars here is that the crust: topping ratio seemed a bit off. The crust is delicious, but I think there’s just a bit much of it. I realize this is something Pirate’s is known for, so if you’re a fan, this is my personal opinion.
Would I return to Pirate’s? I think so. I’d like to put my well done theory to the test!

The service was great. I came with my mother and little brother. My mother and I shared a medium chicken artichoke pizza with pesto sauce (The white sauce doesn’t taste that great with this pizza ^.^) and OMG it was huge, we got to take about half of it home. We got my little brother a mini pepperoni pizza which he enjoyed a lot. Their hot wings were a little soggy but they still tasted alright.

Not sure why this place has really good reviews, came here with my boyfriend and had to ask to be seated and I had to ask to get something to drink because no one helped us. We ordered garlic bread and it was literally a hot dog bun with garlic on it. The pizza was alright but I won’t be back.

Incredibly happy to have walked into this place. We had a long busy day, were tired, and very hungry. It was close by so we took the chance. From being greeted by a friendly, though clearly busy waitress, to diving in to our first bite… it was awesome. She warned us there was a huge group and the kitchen was swamped, yet they got our order out in decent time and the food was phenomenal. We ordered 2 pizzas, and one was half and half, so we actually tried 3 of them… all equally delicious. I was partial to the Greek, the favors were wonderful. They don’t skimp on cheese or toppings. The waitress was helpful and 2 other helpers came by to make sure we got everything we needed.
I feel like I found a new favorite place to go, and there isn’t much better feeling to find a «new to us» pizza joint. I can’t see myself going anywhere else now, honestly!

Great experience. We had stopped at the grocery store nearby after driving to Reno from the Bay Area. We were hungry and decided to give this place a go since it was nearby. The server was so friendly and went above and beyond giving our 18 month old extra snacks and such as we waited for our food. The food was great, everything was great! I will make sure to come back next time I’m in the area.

Wow! If you have not been to Pirates Pizza I highly urge you to swing by. The restaurant has an older décor with the red and white checkered table cloths and tons of silk plants. The waitress is friendly and quite attentive as well. I have recently discovered their ginormous calzones that are stuffed full of ricotta, mozzarella and marinara sauce, and then your choice of toppings of course. The dough is crispy and baked to a golden brown. The pizza is just as impressive. They have a thick crust that is always baked all the way through. The toppings are generous and the pricing is fair. Our friends and I meet there every week and we are truly impressed with the total package pirates has to offer!

Do not let the name fool you, great food and great prices. I’m just visiting but I have eaten here twice, both items were better than expected. Family oriented, large dining area. I recommend this establishment!

Been there a few times for the pizza (thick crust) and salads. Superb pizza. Service can be hit and miss sometimes and a bit slow sometimes. But I love their pizza

I had so much fun here. Great food AND great service!
We had a large half chicken and artichoke/​half meatball. Thick crust on a recommendation from our server. It was phenomenal!

We were there on a Tuesday at about 7. Was pretty quiet but I can imagine with food and service this good they’re probably pretty busy during «regular» hours.
I’ll be back.

As soon as Kim brought me my personal pizza I knew it was fate that I decided to drop by. As soon as I took the first bite I realized that I can now die in peace knowing that I have led a life well lived. Delicious! Big servings for the price! I don’t think i’ll ever go to a different pizza place. Kim is also very kind and will take care of you!

Good pizzas, pastas, breads, calzones, and other foods that are priced well. Cute décor as well:)

We always used to go to pirates and still stop by when we visit our son, who lives in Reno. They just don’t have pizza like it anywhere else, and I get a craving for that thick yummy crust!

Local owned!!! gotta support our local! Crust super thick and pizza pretty dam good. Restaurant nice pirate statues and pirate theme. Was kind of in rush being Halloween day. But I know next time I’ll be sure to stay around.

was working @convention center in reno last week swung by pirate’s pizza friday afternoon to pick up pizza for bunch of us to eat for lunch. damn that was a good choice on my part. was so good a couple of us went back for dinner saturday night when we got back from tahoe. kym was awesome. she took good care of us on the drink refills & was cool to chat with
friday i picked up a medium #9 deep dish pizza (for a medium it was huge) & brought it back. it got destroyed. one coworker was ready to get down on a knee & propose to a slice it was so good. when we went back for dinner saturday we each got small #9s to see who could finish more & it was just as good
i travel a lot & outside of the cities almost everyone thinks about as having great pizza (new york, chicago, new haven.etc.) this is hands down one of the best pizzas i’ve had while travelling.
the ingredients were fresh. the tomato sauce was a nice savory sauce not that weird sweet-​ish sauce some places try to pawn off on their pizzas & the crust was nice & thick at the outer edge & got thinner at the center. i liked the ground sausage & salami they used on the #9. the cheese was nice and melty without being overly greasy.
if youre in town for work at the convention center or just in reno looking for a damn tasty pizza swing by pirate’s & get a pie. a small deep dish is doable for 2 people unless youre a fatkid like me. a medium is good for 4 or more. a large im guessing youre feeding a team

I am sad to say but we have givin up on making this our to go to place for pizza… our last two visits were not good at all !! Mom got stuffed shells and they were horrible, then the waitress goes on to tell us that everything is microwaved and frozen!!! Total disappointment and the pizza was horrible… sad to say that whatever they did, changed chefs or just don’t care anymore, we will be finding a new place to dine!

I love me some pirates pizza! There is a reason they have been around since the 80’s! The staff is always super friendly, not super fast, but you can tell they are working hard! They have Greek food as well as Italian… Never tried their Greek, but love the Italian! Their tomato sauce is to die for! So what ever you do, order something with red sauce! I’m obsessed with their calzone! They have a build your own option and you get to pick 4 toppings! I always get black olives, pepperoni and sausage. (ya, I don’t get a 4^th topping) their calzones are HUGE! I always plan on having leftovers! The crust is hard on the outside and fluffy in the inside! And they old it with sauce, mozzarella, ricotta and your toppings A! Some people get it with ranch, I don’t think it needs it! The hubby either orders the rigatoni, lasagne, or spaghetti. He loves them all! We also usually get an appetizer… Either mozzarella sticks or fries (their friend are really really unique and wonderful! We love this place!

We came to Pirate’s Pizza to celebrate my four year old’s birthday.
Rose, the server, was exceptionally accommodating. She brought crayons and toys and lidded cups for our little boys.
The food was better than average and the beer is cheap :)
They have a Greek food menu which made me very happy. The tzatziki was garlicky and creamy, not watery
The pizza is super cheesy and the boys loved it. The only issue was a minor flubbing the calzone my hubby ordered but he seemed nonplussed.
We will be back :)

One of my top 5 pizza places that I’ve ever been too. The 7 cheese pizza is the
. Tonight we had a pepperoni pizza. We got the small knowing we would be needing room for our late night partying. The small was deff big enough for the two of us. The waitress was very nice and since we were the last ones there she told us to take our time and did not rush us. I can’t wait to go back for another delish pizza

Love this place! They have a great staff of very sweet/​attentive employees & there pizza is incredible tasting! :) I highly recommend the greek pizza which has gyro meat on it which I love personally! :D
They also have affordable brews if your looking to get your buzz on before or during your pizza experience!
I really love this place & hope it sticks around for many years to come!
Please try it if you are a mega pizza lover!

This place Rocks!
I had the Greek Pizza (Beef Gyro, Greek Olives, Feta Cheese, Red Onions, Green Peppers, Roma Tomatoes, Dolmade, Small Spanakopita) and the rest of the group went with a large Pepperoni, Sausage, Mushroom and Onion pizza.
My pizza was marvelous. Fresh Greek ingredients that you normally find in a salad blessed my mouth and warmed my tummy.
When I’m back in Reno, Pirates will be a stop.
