Probably the most under-rated chinese/sushi in town. I like this place as it has great prices, promp friendly service, quality ingredients, and a fair atmosphere. I don’t eat sushi but my girlfriend says its one of her fav’s. I had the generals chicken and sweet & sour pork which were both very good. I can always tell when they use quality meat and make their sauces from scratch, which they definitely do both of. However, some of my family wanted to order the special(in big black print on the entrance sign) which they did not have the ingrediants to make. Also, their booths in the front dining hall are really awkward and some of us were uncomfortable throughout dinner. However, I like this place and will be back.

We went there to have their AYCE dim sum, which apparently consists of very undercooked paper wrapped chicken, oily pot stickers that aren’t cooked through either, some bun that who knows what’s in it, and crab Rangoon which was probably the one edible thing. For $ 14.95 I would expect real dim sum or at least something other than raw pork and chicken. Service was awful too. Complete waste of money.

I used to eat here with my family way back when I was a kid. I went last weekend and it wasn’t as good as I remember, but perhaps it was an off day for the cook or something. The positives: The portions were very nicely sized, and the lemon chicken was very good, save for a piece which was almost entirely gristle. The pot stickers were large and tasty. The hot and sour soup was hearty. The negatives: The egg foo young was not good. It suffered not only from a lack of gravy, but a complete lack of good flavor. The booth seating was remarkably uncomfortable. We were very happy to be leaving because of it. I’ll go again because of how much I used to love it in the past. I will order completely different items, too.

Oh boy, here it goes. Before reading further, I want to express how much I enjoyed the lunch specials and dinner menu for the Mandarin food. This review, however, is for the dim sum/AYCE portion of the restaurant — which, in all honesty, I don’t even know why they bother offering. It was so awful, they’re just doing a disservice to themselves. When we sat down, there were three other people at the bar and one sushi chef. We arrived during lunch hour and the whole place — sushi area AND restaurant area — was dead. I didn’t mind because it’s a Monday and I’ve been to the restaurant portion before when it was jam-packed AND empty, and it was always delicious food. Unfortunately, I was wrong to think that an empty sushi part of the restaurant was okay. Firstly, we sat at a booth, which always makes me feel like I’m not getting as quick or as good of service(but they were dead, so we were the only table to help). There were four adults, three of which were AYCE lunch, and one toddler — we were brought waters, and they didn’t bring ANYTHING for the toddler in our group, or even offer. In fact, I don’t recall them ever actually asking WHAT we wanted to drink, just bringing water and moving on to food. I’m a bit of a pain when it comes to ordering sushi from a booth because I can’t share a massive plate with everyone else — it grosses me out. He humored me, though, and brought an additional marking menu for me to make separate orders. The person in the group ordering Mandarin food ordered way before anyone else, then the pair across the table from us ordered on their sushi menu, and finally my marked menu was taken. Again, they didn’t ask if we were ordering anything for the toddler… I suppose they just assumed she’d be sharing with us, which we ended up doing, so it worked out. I’m just a little perturbed by the complete lack of acknowledgment for the toddler altogether; in any other restaurant, people ask what the child will be drinking or eating, etc etc. I’m upset about all of this, and she’s not even my kid! The Mandarin food came out way before any of the sushi. I’d say she was eating for about seven or even ten minutes before we finally got any of our sushi. The pair that ordered together got their massive plate, which seemed to be missing a few things that one of the two had ordered — and, finally, mine came out… to my surprise, it was covered in items I did NOT order, and neither did the other people eating AYCE. Just… random sushi rolls that had almost nothing to do with what I wanted off of the menu. ANDTHETASTE?! I couldn’t even tell you what kind of fish was in each roll, because they all tasted EXACTLY the same. The rice was so over powered by the vinegar that each roll tasted sour and tangy — and not in a good way. The scallops were mushy and soggy, and almost like dissolving scallop ‘goop’. I ordered five hand rolls and only two long rolls(I hadn’t eaten at all yet today at that point), and I’m pretty sure I got SIX long rolls. How in the world am I supposed to eat all of that, even if I’m really hungry?! Knowing one of the golden rules about AYCE sushi(that you pay for what you don’t eat), I asked for my ordering card back and pointed out that I’d no idea what in the world I was given, but that I didn’t order it. Fortunately, after pointing it out, we didn’t have to pay for any extras. I’d say that’s probably the only thing that this place got right the whole time we were there. Other than that one good service(not charging us extra for their mistake and wasted food), we were kind of left hanging out for long periods of time, the food came out at different times, our youngster was ignored, and the sushi tasted FOUL. And«dim sum»? How can you even consider it a «dim sum» menu without even having Shu Mai or Shrimp Gao?! They also need to change the name to their«pork buns» to read, «SALTED Pork Buns», as the filling was definitely salty pork. The egg custards were soft and bland, the paper wrapped chicken was lifeless and greasy… but the sesame balls had a very happy amount of red bean inside of them, which I appreciated. I will stick to this place for their DELICIOUSMANDARINFOOD, but based solely on the sushi/dim sum experience and the service, this place gets only 1 star. Ignore the sushi, stick to the comfy booths on the restaurant side and the delicious(and extremely well priced! What a deal!) lunch specials.

I went here for lunch the first time in a while yesterday and I have to shave off a star. The sushi chefs were a bit slow for only eight people total at the sushi bar and when I ordered my dim sum the pork spareribs were super super dry — like they’d been sitting under a lamp for two hours. It will be a while before I pay another visit. Otherwise the food was pretty average.

One of the first restaurants I took my husband to when he first moved here so it has special meaning. We both love the Chinese food here. The owner is very friendly and always says hello to every table and asks if there is anything we need. I love the food and the service is always prompt, I have never had a bad experience here.

we went again, and they were just as nice as last time. the owner spent 15 minutes trying to find the giants game for us, and then when she found it, she gave us a free beer for the victory :)

Good sushi and including the Chinese appetizers makes this a good alternative for sushi in Reno. Nothing I had for sushi was good enough I’d tell someone to go there specifically to try it verses some other restaurant, so I’m going to stick with three stars. A positive thing to recommend Yen Ching is that none of the sushi tasted old. So many places have variable freshness. And they do it for $ 13 for lunch, which is more than reasonable. I started with unagi, which is my litmus test for sushi. It was good. Definitely not old. The tamago was good, too. What they list as dim sum I think most people would recognize as just appetizers. The pork bun and sesame ball they offer is something you see on dim sum carts but most of the other items aren’t offered as dim sum. They were good, too. The Yen Ching 2 had an odd crunchiness to it that was offf putting. The sushi chef put together a special roll that included salmon and another fish. It was tasty but it was also huge and filled me up. The upside down shrimp was probably the most disappointing thing I had. Yen Ching is good for sushi and I’d eat there again. Hiroba is still my favorite place for sushi. The sushi is good enough that I want to go back and try their Chinese food.

Yen Ching is probably my favorite sushi hangout in the Reno/Sparks area. Although the quality of the fish is not up to par with let’s say Hiroba, what pushes them to the top for me is: 1) you are almost always able to get a seat at the bar no matter when you go. 2) the chefs are engaging, funny, and always ready to make your next roll. 3) and finally the girls who take your beverage/dim sum orders(did I mention free dim sum w/all you can eat?) are extremely nice. So keep up the good work Yen Ching!

OK, it’s about $ 14 for the all you can eat lunch, which includes all the dim sum and regular items you want. Each person can get one«specialty» long roll as well, which are written on the wipe-off board behind the chefs. I did get scolded pretty harshly by one chef for«changing my order» to the all you can eat, which was his misunderstanding. I think he thought I wanted the happy hour deal for some reason. Also, I think he was pissed because we got in at 3:15 and they agreed to give us the a.y.c.e. lunch price(lunch ends @ 3:30 there). So, almost docked a star for an angry Asian man with a knife shouting at me, but they get to keep the star cuz they followed through by honoring the lunch price. Also they had $ 1.50 Coronas! You’re pretty much losing money by not ordering a couple of those!

Another great meal at Yen Ching– never fails. I could eat here everyday(and I amost do eat here every day!). Authentic, home cooking but soooo much better and tastier. Extremely professonal wait staff. The best kimchee too and I know my kimchee. My favorites are Garlic Chicken, Hot&Sour Sour Soup, Mongolian Beef, Peking Duck, Szechuan Prawns, Snow White Chicken, POTSTICKERS!!! This is my favorite place for Sushi too b.c. their fish is ALWAYS fresh with very comfortable service.. . and FULLBAR! Generous portions too. They said they will add Korean food soon.. . hold me back! Affordable for my limited budget. Oh and they’ve been here for almost 30 years for good reason.

Went here with the fam last night because my sister craved sushi but also chinese or thai food. Should have thought better. The service was so bad in a restaurant that was not busy! The table they sat us at did not have any silverware or napkins and these were not brought until after the food started coming out and my mom physically had to get up and ask them because I think our waitress may have been avoiding eye contact with us… I don’t know. Then they didn’t bring soy sauce for our sushi when it came out. How are you calling yourself a chinese/sushi restaurant and not automatically have soy sauce on every table… at all times! Our food was brought out one dish at a time over a time period of about 45 minutes. My dad asked for hot sauce 3 times. Just some of the things I can think of now. I don’t know if it was a bad night or what… but they need to step up. On a good note, their tofu in the seafood pot… delish!!! I would definitely eat that again. Sweet and sour soup was loaded with goodies. Singapore rice noodles were also tasty. I’ll just order take-out next time. The snow peas in the Snow white chicken were chewy? It was wierd and not that great. A couple of the other dishes were mediocre at best, but not terrible. I’ve got to say though. The service really ruined the night. And not just in a Chinese restaurant service kind of way. It was way beyond bad.

I come here often for sushi on my lunch break because its right down the street from my work. Usually if you make it before 4pm and after 1:30, you can pretty much get a sushi chef to yourself and the service is prompt. All you can eat lunch is about 14 bucks with a soda and a tip, I usually tip a bit more but, its up to you. And dinner is really cheap too under 20 bucks if you get a beer. They have a pretty good sized menu, and offer more«cooked» rolls for the people who can’t handle raw… So its a good place to take first timers, I really like the yellowtail nigiri, the upside down shrimp, and the spicy scallops handroll. Word to the wise, though… Ordering off the all you can eat dim sum menu, takes a long time and I always thought some of the stuff was a little shady… I like going there during football season, to get drunk with my chums and eat sushi, and I’d say some other locals do too… But ordering your food and the wait when its busy is a different story… Thats where the booze comes in… Gotta love them sake-bombs!!! They also serve chinese food too, But once I think sushi, its all over… And my heritage can take a back seat.
