The food is very flavorful and tasty, great for people who love spices. I personally don’t like spice, but I agree that the food was delicious. The staff are helpful, and make great effort. The prices are fair, and the portions are plentiful. Chef Geng’s is a great resturant!

Food is tasty, decent portion, but super greasy. Service is typical Chinese restaurant = no service, rude, and they speak Chinese to the Asian diner(me) and ignore other non– Asian diners. Had to ask for water. Ordered a Coke, came as a can, had to ask for a glass of ice. Minimum to charge credit card is $ 20, which is against Visa and Mastercard policy. Look at how much greasy is in the shredded pork in garlic sauce. Juicy pork steamed dumplings are meh, with more than typical amount of fat in the juice. Will not return due to bad service. No wonder during lunch rush on a Friday, there were only 10 diners in the entire restaurant.

Love this restaurant! I feel like I was in my hometown Shenyang!!! I always go there with my closest friends. All of them love this place! The cold noodle is really delicious! Much better then Korean town’s. Also the spicy hot pot is really good. Try the beef roll! The price is really good. Not expensive at all, really worth it!

this place serves authentic northern chinese food! The food is delicious, my favorite is bell pepper, potato and eggplant dish. Noddle delight is ok. sweet and sour pork is the best. and don’t forget to leave room for sugar coated fruits for dessert.

dongbei regional cuisine. their five delights special is reminiscent of japanese hiyashi chuka. good sized portion that you could split as a light lunch in hot weather. their take on korean jjangmyeon(cold noodle) isn’t bad either. as i went on a pretty hot day, i went with those two dishes. you may want to wait until the weather gets warm again.

I normally come to this restaurant every week, as they have very tasty food and friendly service. However, I am completely DISAPPOINTING today. We order the sour cabbage with pork soup, it’s NO taste at all but oily. I bring it up to the server, and I heard he reported to the chief. Finally, they didn’t come back to me, with NO even a simple apology ! I am not trying to get any benefits, as it’s understandable nobody could be perfect. But I think it’s very important that they SHOULD care about customers’ comments and feeling.

Wanted to try something new and came across Chef Gengs. This place is pretty new so we didn’t know what to expect. The place wasn’t busy at all when the 4 of us came around 7:30pm. We were seated immediately. Workers were super friendly and attentive but they mainly spoke Mandarin so just be patient if you don’t speak. Food came out quickly and was amazing! Five delights special: what a unique pleasant mixture of textures and flavors. The noodles were cooked perfectly and were mixed with a variety of vegetables like cucumber and red cabbage. Warning: the hot yellow mustard sauce can be a little overwhelming. Peking style pork: pork was tender and mixed in a sweet Peking sauce. Great when rolled in the wonton skin Cumin lamb: probably their best dish. The cumin wasn’t overbearing but adding a nice taste. Not too spicy either. Sautéed onions were a nice addition. Delicious over rice. Stir fungus and cabbage: loved the fungus. Sautéed nicely. Sauce was soy sauce based and not too salty. Nice vegetable dish to feel a little healthy. Bonus: portion sizes were very generous. There was plenty of food for our group of 4. We definitely all left feeling stuffed. Great customer service and decent prices are always a nice addition. Can’t wait to come back and try all their other dishes.

I came here once with my girlfriend. The food was average and I think we paid more than it was worth. We tried the popular dish«cumin lamb» and it does not qualify as a Chinese dish, it was more like a try hard Mediterranean dish that failed. Not to mention it was over powered with grease and oil. It didn’t taste good like people say it does. The juicy dumplings tasted ok. I would not come here again and would not recommend to people who like authentic Chinese food. The food is mediocre and a bit pricey for the quality.

Order four dishes. Overall, for my own opinion. It is just OK. The lamb skewers not marinated long enough, cook not long enough. It is juicy but tasteless. The fried pig intestine are over cooked and like eating crispy cookies. For me, will not come back. Also, the servers. They never ask you anything unless you wave your hand for them. What kind of customers service this restaurant is providing. Noise level are high which very typical Chinese restaurant.

I stumbled upon this restaurant because I came across delicious looking photos posted by Robert P. Boy, was it a great find! The funny thing is that a long time ago, it used to be another restaurant I loved too. Glad I can come here and reminisce. I hope this one is here to stay. Service was wonderful here and the place is well kept. Even though there is an abundance of Chinese food in this area, it’s still quite hard to find one that does a good job overall. I think Chef Geng’s definitely comes close to hitting the mark. I love that they have such a wide variety of items on their menu. I particularly like the bean thread salad and cumin lamb. Both were yummy and tasty. The lamb doesn’t have a game-y taste either. Recommended!

I just eat here but it’s so chip four the lunch special. They tricked me in big plates of lunch specials so I eat way a Lots. Midas well buy a bunch to try it all. It’s all good dough when fried but side of water helps the thirsty ness. Might come back but never no what’s up. Tank U!

Nine of us squeezed into a round table for eight to enjoy the lunch yesterday. If you prefer your group to be seated at one table, limit your group to nine. It’s a small place. Located in the very convenient and massive Garvey Shopping Center at Garvey and San Gabriel(park on the San Gabriel Blvd side), it was easy to spot the large restaurant signage but parking was horrible. Why 4 stars, and not 5, if we enjoyed it so much? The fried rice, maybe shrimp fried rice, was disappointing. They used spam and frozen peas and carrots, which you can easily make at home. Don’t get me wrong, I love spam fried rice and make this often at home but so it was shocking to see spam with frozen peas and carrots which was not noted on the menu. Enough said, that was disappointing. We ordered 10 dishes but they were all brought out one at a time, including the 2 orders of green onion pancake. Don’t get that. After our order was placed, I remembered reading about a complimentary dish for over orders over $ 30. We called the server back to inqure which she offered the cold seaweed salad. If we didn’t ask, I don’t believe she would have offered it to us. Otherwise, service was better than average Chinese restaurants. They do accept credit cards. Cumin lamb, green onion pancake, sweet potato cake, braised green beans, salt pepper fish fillet, nagaimo with snow beans, hot candied sweet potato were all very good, especially cumin lamb. Extensive menu with lunch specials but if you can’t read Chinese, you would not know it is offered weekdays only. Not very many people came in for lunch yesterday and I would hate to see this new place not survive. Not a place for bargain lunch at $ 12 per person with very little left over and we had only one man in the group but the prices were fair for good tasty food. Looking forward to gather another group to try other dishes soon.

They have almost 170 dishes, which is amazing. We spent more than $ 30, so we got a cold dish for free. We had 2 people ordered 4 dishes for only $ 36 + tips. And their food taste good. No need to wait in line, service was nice as well.

I knew we really liked Chef Geng’s when, right in the middle of our meal, my guest called to a person looking at the menu on the front window, «Come on in, it’s good!» Chef Gheng’s opened only 10 days before we arrived, but trust me, Chef(whomever) spent considerable time in northeastern China learning the culture, cuisine, and most of all, how to make people happy with dishes that, I imagine, taste like you were in Liaoning. That’s where our lovely waitress said she was from. Winters in northeast China must be harsh and growing seasons short. People from areas like that seem to have a deep appreciation for what they have and what they can offer their guests. Today we were grateful beneficiaries of that devotion. Onion pie was first on the list, because cheap($ 3 lunch) and I wanted something to compare with Beijing Pie House. No comparison, but no problem; Chef Gheng’s has far more to offer. We had«Five Delights with Glass Noodle,» and Cumin Lamb. Both remarkable for what I can only imagine is authenticity, because both were familiar yet quite different from anything we have experienced before. Cumin Lamb was perfect – bold, but safely so. Often a dish with cumin + chili is too hot, but my guest(timid palate) deemed it easily manageable. I have a steel palate, so barely noticed it. I thought the cumin was warm, inviting, and comfortable, like an old tweed jacket. We ordered«Five Delights» just because of its appealing name, and it was an absolute star. To call it a salad… do they have salads in Liaoning?, don’t know, but it had 5 distinct super fresh vegetables under a canopy of tender, sweet glass noodles, and a mustard-spicy sauce that gave us the notion it was made from scratch. We are already planning a return trip… with friends we want to impress with our keen knowledge of China’s northeastern cuisine and gracious hospitality. *****5 stars!*****
