Clueless servers, my son ordered a shake. They scraped all the old, sticky, thawed and re-frozen I’ve cream from the side of the container to make it. Disgusting. My Chicken Fried Steak was about 3″ in diameter with Luke warm gravy. None of the dishes were above a 3 star in taste. Giving it 1 star due to poor food quality, completely lame service with only two tables in the whole place and the fact that they were out of several things on the menu. Must be staying alive serving alcohol at night.

Mighty Kong Muffins! SITREP Thanks to Joe the Wizard, this was for me a new yummy Sunday brunch stop we tried OFF the Sacramento«grid» for a change! On…(wait for it… wait for it…) STOCKTONBLVD! THESETUP The décor is definitely kitschy with LOTS of King Kong pictures, figurines, references, etc.etc. It made for a fun ambiance. We actually had a group of about 16 for this outing, including several vegetarians, and hardcore meat-eaters, so it was an opportunity to see how diverse and extensive the fare at Mighty Kong Café was truly. THEMENU Delicious French Toast, Homemade Sausage, Home Fried Potatoes, Crispy Hashbrowns, Omelets that melt in your mouth. It is fantastic and delicious. We also shared a large basket of yummy muffins of various flavors(and fiber contents! I got the one with the MOSTFIBER!) THELOWDOWN A great place to get a delicious breakfast and brunch over the weekend!

Monkeys, Muffins, & More! Ooh ooh ooh ah ah ah!!! I returned to Mighty Kong after a yearlong hiatus for a UYE brunch. In my absence, they had undergone a complete facelift! I actually thought I was in a different restaurant when I entered. There was nothing but monkey business before, but now this place is looking pretty dapper! My brunch experience was filled with tasty temptations and fun! I opted for a mimosa to start, and then another, and another… yeah, a lot of mimosas! But, that’s what brunch is all about, right? Their menu is extensive, enough to please most palates, including the UYE crew. I demolished a towering plate of fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with fresh fruit. Absolutely delicious! That left me swinging through the trees with delight! I also snacked on their incredible potato pancakes. Forget those boring hashbrowns and house potatoes. Mighty Kong’s apes really know how to spice up their spuds! The waitress had her hands full with our large party, but she was able to make us feel like kings and queens of the jungle! She did well with getting our orders out promptly and splitting all the checks. She also brought over a huge platter of their famous bran Gorillalicious MUFFINS with different tasty flavors such as chocolate, apple, and blueberry. Plus, their muffins are touted to be healthy(low fat, low carb, high fiber, and high protein), so that means I can eat more than one(like a whole platter in one sitting)! Even though I had carbed-out on those pancakes, I devored a muffin too and washed it down with more mimosas! Needless to say I left in a food coma, dreaming of more muffins, monkeys with muffins, and King Kong on top of the Empire State Building with a platter of muffins! Take note that they do have limited hours — closed M-W and only open for breakfast and lunch. But, rumor has it that they may be serving dinner soon. I love that they’ve been revamped and now they’ve been stamped with my approval! This primate palace is definitely worth a trek into the jungle of Stockton Blvd(south of the UCD Med Center), but just be wary of King Kong!

MK is delicious. They make their food from scratch and you can tell. They recently added a bar, and it’s a beaut! Pay close attention to the hours, as it tends toward being somewhat finicky in my experience. One of my only complaints is regarding the new bar stools. They are bulky, heavy and I actually tore both of my pants pockets trying to keep from sliding forward. I know… wth? I will be back!

Our next brunch expedition led by Joe K., took us Unilocalers through the asphalt jungles of Sacramento to the corner of Stockton Blvd. &12th Avenue: A destination all of us hungry Unilocalers were looking forward to! The staff had our tables staked out and ready to serve. At first, I felt that our large party would be overwhelming for the waitress who was in charge of taking care of us. But Leigh Ann took the plunge and handled our orders with a down to earth smile and maintained a professional flair. Our brunch began with some serious libations made from soju cocktails. I had the $ 3.00 mimosas and after browsing through the limited breakfast menu, it didn’t take long to choose from some tempting selections. I ordered the vegetarian omelet which included sautéed tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach folded into melted Swiss cheese. The combinations of flavors were outstanding and made for one of the best veggie omelets I’ve had in a long time! Included was my choice of some delicious, crispy house potatoes and a side of rye toast. My boyfriend had buttermilk biscuits and gravy, with crispy hash browns and bacon. Every bite of food was good until the last! We were also treated with some tasty complimentary homemade muffins that came in a variety of flavors to choose from. The Mighty Kong Café did a great job creating some delicious meals, surrounded by a fun, interesting restaurant, with an awesome staff that made us feel welcome! I look forward to taking another safari here and exploring the menu further. They offer fresh, seasonal dishes and use local ingredients. Open only for breakfast and lunch. Parking isn’t easy and requires finding a place along the neighborhood streets, but well worth the effort!

As I entered the Mighty Kong Café I could not help but be pleasantly surprised by the rich leather décor. The interior was warm and inviting and was much nicer than the rather stark exterior would have led me to believe. I chose to sit on a very comfortable stool at the bar since it was early on a Friday morning and I was the first customer of the day. Ordering breakfast was a most arduous decision but, in the end, the idea of «in house made» sausages was too much for my curiosity and I ordered eggs and sausage with potato pancakes and sour dough toast. The sausage patties turned out to be delightful and I kept patting myself on the back for ordering them. The potato pancakes were like hash browns with a little flour added giving them a bit of a novelty affect. Coffee was topped off nicely and service was great but that could be expected when you are one of only two customers in the place. Unfortunately I did not get around to tasting the muffins but here is a link to Carol P,‘s ROTD for their muffins.

This is one of those places I’d never find without the app. I picked up my date for a brunch outing and the place she wanted to go was on the other side of town and a chain that I don’t really like. I said, «no there’s this great place right near you. We should go there.» She asks where and I say«I just need to look up the address.» Closest and highest rated place? Mighty Kong. Named for the king of the jungle? Good start. We’re off. When we get there we’re immediately greeted and seated and two different people couldn’t be warmer taking care of us. We order and when we mention it’s our first time, we get FREEMUFFINS. Apparently they make these little tasty treats there from scratch everyday and we get two for just showing up for the first time. I got a walnut cranberry, she got a blueberry chocolate. Both were great and went well with the coffee. Then the food arrives. I get the chicken fried steak, she gets the chicken and waffles. The waffles weren’t the overly doughy standards but these thinner and crispier ones. AND it came with praline butter spread. The chicken? It was the first non-dry fried chicken since I’ve gotten to Sacramento. Juicy fall off the bone chicken with crispy coating around it. My chicken fried steak was a close second. AND it came with a homemade biscuit that was fluffy and took up the gravy like a champ. And as we were eating, the server, the chef and hostess ALL came to check in on us. And at one point my date got into a pretty heated endorsement about the value of different hotsauces with our server and really enjoyed herself. So to recap — the food was great, came out fast and the service is about as friendly as is possibly without some mythical southern housewife appearing with a personal gravy boat. That kind of hospitality is tough to find anywhere. Tougher still with food that deserves it. All in? Best breakfast in Sacramento since I’ve gotten here. It’s off the beaten path but you need to start beating your way there to get some of it. It’s worth it.

My experience was the opposite of many of the reviews here: we had great service, but lack-luster food disappointed the ever-loving-ish out of me. Those mighty-kong muffins, while tasty, are far from mighty. They are tiny, tiny kong muffins. Seriously, the name totally throws off your expectations. I almost lost my tiny kong muffin behind my orange juice at one point during the meal. I mean, I ordered a whole meal centered around this muffin and it came as a thoughtless afterthought to my yogurt and other shoulda-just-ate at home breakfast items. That poor muffin, maybe it was picked too soon, needed some more time to grow, mature, and see the world. What a shame. Also had the french toast, which was not battered well, dry in the middle, and tasteless. As the saying goes, I really wanted to like this place. It’s in my hood, it’s a funky building, and our area needs more cool, relaxing places to dine. I’ll try it again for lunch because I really want this place to succeed. They have a cool bar I can picture being a nice place for an afternoon pint.

I’ve only been here twice because they seem to be closed whenever I try to go, but this place is one of many gems on Stockton Blvd… The food is great and the atmosphere is cool. I couldn’t care less about service, personally, I have a soft spot in my heart for rude Chinese service, I love it… But Mighty Kong’s service was great, my girlfriend always had a full cup of coffee and my water was always topped off. The food does take a while to come out, but that’s only because it’s made with TLC and comes out FRESH. I had the BLT with shredded pork belly… twice. I’ll probably order it again when I go back, I’ll never get to try the other food now =/ I really liked the muffins because they taste homemade, and relatively healthy for a muffin… So if you like the over-processed, sugar glazed ones you can get at your local supermarket these probably aren’t going to do it for you. Don’t get me wrong, I like those too. All in all, this place is just good. You get a lot of bang for your buck even with the increase in price I saw another review had mentioned. Don’t miss out on this place!

The food is tasty(and very fairly priced), but there were a few disappointments with Mighty Kong Café. — Never received any coffee refills. –Ordered muffins but did not receive them until we were done with the meal. –The waitress gave the table next to us a glass of water, the person didn’t want it, so she gave it to us. This was just weird anyway because she only brought one water(and there were two of us). –Food took about 45 minutes to come out. –The AC was blasting and the lady next to us asked for the fan to be turned off; the waitress said okay, but didn’t do anything about it. Overall, my experience really wasn’t that great. By looking at all of the great reviews, maybe I just happened to come on a bad day. Maybe I should give it another shot at some point.

The atmosphere in the Mighty Kong is, well, mighty. I’ve been meaning to try this place and am sorry it took so long. I walked in to get some take-out lunch one day, only to find out that they don’t serve lunch all day on Sat and Sun. They have very peculiar hours and on the weekends, it’s breakfast up until maybe 11, and then lunch — not both. As I turned to leave, I was approached by the Mighty Kong it’self — it turns out his first name is King. Pun intended apparently. King was very welcoming and enjoyable. He gave me a free muffin and explained that they need a new kitchen top to be able to do both breakfast and lunch items.(Didn’t understand, but didn’t ask). He explained that the bar was imported from somewhere interested, which I vowed to re-learn when i go there for a Friday happy hour. I left with just a muffin in hand, but have been back twice for lunch and also enjoyed the rice-alcohol bloody marys, which King assured me used twice as much alcohol to make up for the rice-booze content. Point, King. The place used to also be a boxing gym, which was memorialized by some classic photos on the walls from former fighters. Amidst it all were King Kong posters and memorabila. Fitting and fun, I thought. Their pulled pork mac and cheese appetizer has been taunting me and again, I wish they were open a little later on school nights so that I can come home from work and still enjoy a meal. Thinking about ordering muffins for the whole office though. Love supporting my neighborhood places!

After driving by this café dozens of times over the last few months my wife and I decided to give them a try. They were featured in the local area for having good breakfast, and so here we went. First of all, it is easy to see that nearly all the bad reviews came from last year when the café was under remodeling. I think that they, if open minded enough to try, would find the Mighty Kong to be better than they first experienced. My own experience was rather enjoyable. Being a breakfast snob it takes more than just some good coffee to make me happy(but you would be happy to know their coffee was actually quite good). I got the 2 egg breakfast which came with a potato pancake, toast and sausage(which I substituted for fruit). The eggs were perfect over medium with no runny whites(i have noticed that many places have trouble with this) and the potato pancake was hot, fluffy and delicious. I also ordered a belgium waffle on the side which was fluffy and slightly sweet all on its own. My wife ordered the pancakes which looked delicious as well, and she assured me they were. The waitress was very friendly and when we asked, she told us more about the restaurant, and the muffins that so many have written about. Since it was our first time there, we were both offered a free muffin on the house. They were decidedly bran-style but were good all things considered. As others have written, they were small, but since they were free, I cannot complain about the price. I can only assume that those coming in to buy them are looking for a more evolved bran muffin. That is what I would categorize this as. Overall, my wife and I really enjoyed the restaurant, and will definitely be back. I would strongly recommend this place for breakfast!

I ordered the muffin combo with yogurt and fruit, it was a pretty good deal considering all the food you get for around 5 bucks. But I was not expecting a very small bite size muffin which made me knock off a star for this review. My boyfriend on the other hand had a delicious potato pancake along with his omelet. The décor was interesting kind of a retro, hip place with posters of gorillas everywhere.

Was in the Sacramento area and was craving french toast. However, when I saw that there was chicken & waffles on the breakfast menu, I could not resist. Was seated quickly and because we were first timers, the server offered us a complimentary«famous» muffin. I love chocolate and I was not a fan of their muffins. Glad that I didn’t have to pay for it. But as for our entrée, the portions were big! I should have split my order with my boyfriend. Plus: Loved what I ordered & the décor of the place. Minus: Their«famous» muffins

You first sight a lovely 100 year old bar from Chicago that is patiently waiting for city permits to be installed into the new re-model. It seems to be a two man show — one running the front and one running the back, so I was a little worried this was going to be an all day affair, but after taking care of the high maintenance table next to us, tea and food started flowing. The country fried steak was very interesting — it seemed more like roast beef, but the breading and gravy made this a top dish. The french toast was also tasty and dense as it should be. Excellent food for a very reasonable price. Watch out if you check the menu online; prices have gone up about a dollar across the board. We’ll definitely be coming back to try the chicken and waffles next!

Breakfast is good here and excellently priced… You can expect breakfast to be $ 4 – 8. I ordered the special. it was scrambled eggs, onions, garlic, and sausage with a hint of cinnamon. It also came with choice of home fries or hash browns and fruit with a slight hint of cinnamon covered with country gravy. Now you won’t be massively full, but you will be content with your delicious meal. The bran muffins are good, moist and tasty. Go here and support this restaurant, they have something good here that’s worth a look. The next thing on my list is to try their lunch.

Me and two friends ate there for the first time today after reading the reviews here on Unilocal.I ordered the Vegetarian«Tuna» Melt from the Lunch Menu.(see the picture I uploaded). Never having had faux-tuna, I had no idea what to expect, but let me tell you, it was REALLY good! Our waiter was nice and prompt(we were the only ones in there, and that may be why) but regardless, he was nice. Another employee came out and asked how we were doing, and offered us each a free muffin(their claim to fame). We were all pleasantly surprised that a bran muffin could taste so good! I tried the banana chocolate chip, SOGOOD! I would definitely pay for one of those in the future! The presentation of our lunch was awesome, something you’d find at a pricier venue, and the taste was amazing as well. I will definitely go back, and recommend all my friends/family! The décor is kitschy, which I like, with their Gorilla/Urban theme space. When we were there they had yellow caution tape around a gigantic bar they must have been in the process of installing. I hope they will do a mimosa brunch in the near future! I would love to go back for that! Good Job and Good Luck Mighty Kong!!!

This place is simply outstanding. The staff, the food, and the muffinS!!! The variety comes in all sorts and very scumptious. Ever since this place open, ive always wanted to come. It was always so tempting. One day, my brother and come here in randomness. Eating muffins was awesome. The food was cooked with love and the staff was friendly. They even offered us free muffins(we we the only ones here). The décor is really nice and trendy. I would come here more often if i had the chance. Definitely recommended. Pros: Food, staff, muffins. Cons: Hours, Parking Stars. 4

When I was visiting at my aunties home over the holiday’s i noticed a menu from Might Kong Café. I asked her about it and she raved all about the food and muffins. Unilocal the place and the reviews were pretty good, so my husband and I decided to try it for breakfast. We were greeted by Sandy with a friendly Hello. I ordered the 2 eggs with hash browns, sausage and toast. My husband ordered the french toast with sausage. Our food came out hot and fresh within about ten minutes or so. I was interested in trying the sausage. While we were waiting Sandy was giving us the low down that they do not use preservatives in any of their foods and that all the food is made on site. We were excited to dig in once our food was served. Everything was great on my plate. The sausage was to die for. Each order comes with two patties, but I only ended up eating one. Sometimes meat and I don’t agree early in the morning. Gave the other sausage to my husband he gobbled up all three patties and his french toast. Had a bite of my husband french toast and it is like no other; they make the bread on site and it is some type of Italian bread that I am unfamiliar with. But, it taste so yummy! We were given two muffins one an eye opener(ginger and cranberries) and persimmons with raisins. The muffins were YUMMY!!! Flake and got better with each bite. They are currently only open for breakfast and lunch but they will be serving dinner/wine/beer sometime in Feb. I will be going back for breakfast and to try lunch…

Went for lunch, not for breakfast so I didn’t try a muffin. Seems like I was missing out, so I’ll need to go back. But their lunch is definitely something to write home about. They stop serving breakfast at noon, so don’t try to get your eggy brunch here. Hearing this and after temporarily meeting with defeat, I turned to the lunch side of the menu and found plenty to lust after. I ended up getting the tri-tip sandwich($ 8) which was meaty and delicious. This place is inexpensive, bright and fun. It’s a midtown place in and at Oak Park prices. Awesomeness all around. Oh yeah, and make sure you check out the giant gorilla statue in the corner. It made a tablemate Unilocal in surprise when she first saw it.
