At the end of a long day on our way to our motel in Napa, we decided to drive thru this A&W. Even though we didn’t go inside, the young woman taking our order was so helpful and polite, it was incredible service for a drive thru. My husband was so pleased that they had veggie burgers since he is a vegetarian and had thought he would only be having fries and root beer float. He said the veggie burger was delicious. Our float were generous and we also had cheese curds, one of my midwest favorites! The employee arranged our order to cost the least amount by bundling part of it in a meal. She also gave us coupons for the future. It was a great experience from someplace we didn’t expect to be talking about days later.

Look, this is Napa. We come here for the foie gras and the cabernet. AND the root beer made with 100% real cane sugar. OK, well that last part is for some of us. If you’ve traveled a bit around this valley, you know that once you’re north of the Napa town line, you’ve entered the Siberia of fast food and most other national chains of any variety. Except for Restoration Hardware coming to Yountville with a wine bar, but that’s another story. This spot in St. Helena is a bit of an oasis in that regard. I know I just moved from frozen tundra to desert, but bear with me, the point is, as fast food goes, these folks work hard to give you a good experience and great mini corn dogs among the many other treats and there’s no other chain for miles around doing anything like this. One thing I must point out is that the current(Autumn 2015) management is completely on top of keeping this location clean and in doing hands-on training with staff. The staff here is friendly, the root beer tops, and you can ring the bell on your way out to demonstrate your approval. If you have a special request, say loading up a Coney Chili Dog with Cheese Curds, they will make it happen for you. Also, if you’re looking for some great deals, go ahead and sign up for their text message service. There’s indoor and patio seating as well as drive-through service. The grill guys are great and you really get the feeling that the staff knows how to work together as a team and get things done. Also, this is a place when you want to chill out with some ‘60s tunes every time. No random music, this is part of the experience.

I went here for lunch today and was not satisfied with the customer service. I said the meal was to go they made it for«here» and I got my daughter a kids meal and they forgot to give me the cup for her drink and when I asked for a cup they gave me a mini polar swirl cup and that is literally the size of a mini Dixie paper cup(the size of your ring finger) and when I got home my papa Berger single did not have cheese but my papa Burger double did have cheese and the fries taste like they were cooked in the same oil as the chicken tenders if I have to pay these outrageous prices I want my food to be served the way I expect it and would like to have better customer service. NEVERGOINGHEREAGAIN. I would rather drive 30 minutes to Napa to get fast food. If I could give them less stars I would

Paid $ 11.65 for a chicken burger meal w/onion rings and drink. Not sure what numbered meal it was, but burger was tiny and nothing special at all. The onion rings were the only redeeming quality of this visit. I’m still hungry and I will never go back.

Needed food desperately after a visit to the hospital went much longer than anticipated. Their veggies were fresh and the bacon tasted like bacon we’d cook at home. They’re a bit pricier than I would have expected out of a fast food restaurant but they gave us the sustenance we needed for our lengthy drive home. The root beer on tap was a nice touch also. Yummy.

So apparently, I’ve been checking in on the old listing, and even wrote a review for the old listing. Oh well. Its still the same to me. Its your average fast food chain. So that’s three stars right there. They get an extra star because of the nice people who work there. They’re always friendly and helpful. They tell you what kind of deals they have that’s better than the order that you just asked for. Also a bonus, is that when you order a root beer and dine in, they offer a frosted mug for your use.

Just bad… Dirty and disorganized. Also expensive! We are talking airport fast food expensive… A regular little cheeseburger is 4.49… They had 3 combos priced between 9.99 and 10.99… Not good value compared to other fast foods.

First time at a A&W and definitely impressed. This location is good opposite to the fancy and shmancy restaurants in the wine country. It is budget friendly and worth every buck. I ordered the #5 single bacon cheeseburger and my husband ordered the #2, the double. Our food was not only tasty but it was presented well. It did not have the sloppy look of your average fast food joint, which made the experience even more pleasant. The cashier was super friendly. He was training someone and the trainee was very nice too. The restaurant is clean and we’ll kept. Will be stopping in the future again.

Lupi was the counter person that helped and I was so thoroughly impressed by her outstanding customer service. She greeted me immediately and treated me like I was a friend she had been expecting. I was tired after a long and late drive and didn’t have any idea of what to get. Lupi made a few suggestions and I want with it(she even made my chocolate shake extra chocolatey). We talked while I waited for my food and it wasn’t one of those«jeesh, I wish I could get out of talking to her but I’m hostage until I get my food» kind of talks, it was very nice and engaging. Food was ready and Lupi sent me off with my meal and a smile. Beyond the service being so good so was the food. Chicken Sandwich, wow, full of flavor and quite a nice size chicken breast as well(filed me up!), the onion ring were soooo good, the chocolate shake too was delicious. OH! and you have to try the corn dog poppers! Why can’t I buy these in a retail format, they are AMAZING!!! Anyway, if you are looking for some good fast food and great customer service, hit up this A&W in the evening and say“hi” to Lupi1

Theyre known for A&W root beer u find at grocery stores, but i remember our family always hunting down an A&W drivethru as we drove to Vancouver, CA during summer vacations. i was probably 8 or so and was just ho-hum, but now eating here as an adult. i can appreciate the rich root beer flav in the soda and the food items. i had a hamburger with fries. Avg fast food taste. but i did get my share of free refills at the self serve beverage dispenser

I really wanted to like this A&W, but they make it hard to support them. TL;DR The rootbeer is delicious, the food is alright(though overpriced) –and the management is horrible. Go somewhere else. It’s not always easy to eat out in St. Helena on a budget, and the idea of a cheaper-than-gotts burger joint is appealing. However, the prices are only slightly cheaper than Taylor’s/Gott’s, and the service is slow and unpleasant. One night I came in at 9:20(which is 40 minutes before closing) and their large lady manager was grouchy and rude, loudly saying, «Ugh, I hate how people think it’s okay to come in this late.» That being said, the understaff all seemed nice and friendly, though service is sometimes slow. One cool thing is that the rootbeer comes in a frosted mug if you eat in. I was very excited to see that they had reopened, but it’s disappointing to see a good restaurant idea like this go to waste. There are much better places to eat in town. What you end up getting is lukewarm comfort food for the price of high-quality cuisine.

We purchased a few vege-burgers and they were some of the best we have found at fast food places. The fry’s and onion rings were good also. It goes without saying the root beer float was the best. It was a very busy day with the car show going on but there service was still quick and freindly.

Came in at 9:30 for dinner. Sat here and had to listen to the very loud night manager complain about her job. Complain that everyone comes in late to eat and she can’t get her job done. Complaining about management and how they don’t giver her enough man hours to complete her job. Honestly I don’t care nor do I want to listen to it. Root beer is great food is so so if I come back it will be to get some root beer. Food was made her words to the staff and to the whole restaurant was this is the best I can do it’s not going to be good but if he’s mad oh well. I for sure won’t be back. Her comment was he can be mad really he can I don’t care. Her name is Lynn.

The St. Helena A&W is open for business once again! My wife & I just ate bacon cheeseburgers and they were delicious! The onion rings were hot and tasty too. We each had a signature A& W root beer float as well and if you eat at the restaurant they still bring it to you in a large frosty mug.
