Had been to Mathew’s for lunch previously, and really liked it — comfortable, good food(the burger was amazing and totally prepared the way I wanted, medium RARE). Went for dinner with my daughter and had a great experience. Our server was attentive without being distracting. I ordered the pork chop and it was actually perfect, as were the brussell sprouts and potato pancakes that accompanied. Started with the beet salad — you cannot go wrong if you like the rich combination of goat cheese, beets and red onion(which I love). My daughter ordered the salmon, which was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was relaxed. Absolutely worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

Girlfriend and I went to their for lunch. Was a great surprise. Small restaurant with nice staff. Menu was small for lunch, but didn’t bother us. Tortilla soup was delicious. I had the cowboy burger And my girlfriend had the grill cheese. I loved my burger and she loved her sandwich. They make their own chips. I liked them and my girlfriend didn’t. Chips are little well done. I had the brownie dessert and my girlfriend had bread pudding and liked it.

I have been putting off this review because I am really on the fence about this place. Yes, I did end up giving it four stars but it easily could be a three. I am mostly on the fence because of the service. Not that our server was rude or annoying or made a big mistake, it was that she just didn’t seem to know what she was doing. Oh, and we had to wait for beverages and she was guessing who’s order was who’s. Anyway, I decided not to knock Mathew’s due to the service we received. She may have been giving wonderful service to the rest of the place! So on with the review. We met up with two other couples for a celebratory dinner of sorts. It was reasonably busy and we were sat at a table upstairs in the very back of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is decorated very nicely. It had a romantic darkly lit vibe which was nice but also a bit awkward for our table of six. So, the food and drinks were all tasty and everyone seemed to really enjoy their meals. I had the shrimp and grits and would definitely have them again and again. The grits were flavored well and the shrimp were, well they were shrimp — can’t really go wrong with shrimp! We ordered as much as we could to taste and be able to review and find out favorites. The pretzels were really really good and the pig wings were also tasty, but maybe a bit overpowered by the buffalo sauce. The not pizzas were hailed as another re-order item on the next visit. All in all the place is worth checking out. Hopefully you have better luck with the service!

Very good food, and not your average restaurant. Family owned and operated, gives you an awesome welcoming feel. Not only good for and cocktails, but great atmosphere as well. Definitely recommend.

Had a birthday dinner celebration there tonight and all of us really enjoyed our food. The Mathew’s steak was cooked to perfection, the roasted chicken was super moist and delicious and apparently the salmon was outstanding as well according to a person in our party. The sweet potatoes were a perfect consistency with just the right touch of sweetness and the brussel sprouts were just the right firmness and flavored well with bacon. We will definitely return to this establishment!

Have passed by many times and finally made it in tonight. The space is beautiful and very inviting. Enjoyed a great bottle of wine recommended by Matthew himself. The pork wings are definitely one of a kind and if you don’t make it in for the schnitzel and spaetzle special before it’s gone you will be remiss! Can’t wait for the next visit! The meatloaf is next on my list!

Very good meal. We were here for Brunch — just wanting a light meal. We were pleased with our selections: huevos rancheros and grilled cheese. Polite and prompt service. Would definitely go back again.

I’m reading positive reviews from other credible Unilocalers about this place, but my experience was not good on Saturday. We were in the area and I had heard of this place before and wanted to try it out. It was somewhat late for dinner(9:30ish) so we checked online and found that they were open until 11. I really don’t like walking into places expecting good food when they are minutes away from closing. However, we were there 1.5 hours before close. As we pulled into the side parking lot, we saw that there were to young children sitting at the bar… odd. As we walked in, there was only one party of two sitted at a corner bar table and the two little kids milling about the place. We didn’t see any employees and there were zero tables that were sat in the dining area. We waited a minute or two at the front and then I decided to head to the bathroom. I came back and found my wife still waiting to be seated. She said that she still hasn’t seen anyone come out of the back to either the bar area or dining area. It was just odd. When walking into a place on a Saturday night, and you are greeted by someone’s unattended children, you notice nobody else is eating there, and the place is void of employees, there are only two options, rob the place or find somewhere else to eat. Since I’m not into crime we headed across the street to a pizza joint that was open(and full of customers). Matthew… the place seemed nice, and others said they’ve been served good grub here, but you have some serious problems if this is a normal experience. And I’d say that the fact that you had no customers on a Saturday night indicates less than stellar past performance. Maybe change the name to Matthew’s Customers… because the fact that all of your employees were in the Kitchen meant lost revenue. Unilocal is asking if you offer Waiter Service… I’m checking the ‘Not Sure’ box.

Had dinner for two on Friday, August 28, 2015 and we both left highly disappointed. It was our first time there although I did attend a wedding rehearsal there in March and found the catered food good. Unfortunately this time was a disaster from the start. We started with Crab Cakes and Popcorn Scallops with fried spinach. Compliments for the Popcorn Scallops(okay) and fried spinach(tasty) but the crab cakes tasted fishy and smelled old. It was edible but certainly not something I would order again. The Popcorn Scallops came with a cocktail sauce that was very good but came in a small dish. We asked for more and after sitting a while not wanting to eat them without more sauce we had to remind our waiter(friendly but new). We had a Urban Chestnut beer and a Cab wine — both were good. Dinner consisted of the pork chop in maple syrup and bacon with a side dish. As it was steak night, I ordered the Ribeye medium rare, creamed spinach, and the horseradish whipped potatoes. The pork chop arrived with the side that we never received. The chop itself was swimming in ¾ in of maple syrup with a pile of peaches on top of it. I tasted the chop and found it dry. My dinner companion felt it was a bit too much and was expecting it a drizzle, not soaking in an overabundance of sweetness. The dry chop had no flavor and the peaches/maple syrup was all that you tasted for the entire meal. It looked and smelled like a breakfast plate of french toast and fruit, not a dinner of a well-balanced pork chop cooked to perfection. The Ribeye was paper thin and had a excess of marble. The restaurant was so dark I couldn’t tell if it was cooked correctly but it didn’t matter as I found it to be fairly tasteless. The waiter asked if I would like garlic butter on my steak which I said yes to and expected a small amount applied to flavor it during the final cooking process. I receive a large lump of butter that surrounded the steak which I pushed off with a fork before it drowned in it. The ribeye may have been covered in a peppercorn that wasn’t properly ground as I bit directly into several larger ones during the meal, not the most pleasant tastes. I found it to be chewy and lack the gamey flavor you expect from a ribeye. In short, it was cheap piece of meat and tasted like it. The Horseradish Whipped Potatoes were cold, room temperature as best. I informed the waiter who apologized and went off to get a replacement, neither he nor the potatoes ever returned. The cream spinach was good and the only thing I ate. The potatoes went untouched and the majority of steak remained on my plate. The waiter was kind by not offering us dessert. Our bill was $ 99 for 2 appetizers, 1 bear, 1 glass of wine, and 2 entrees. We walked out a little lighter in the wallet and had nothing to show for it. We will not return and cannot recommend this restaurant to others.

Absolutely loved Mathew’s Kitchen. I’m new to the area and had heard about«pig wings» so I thought I’d give them a shot. I’m so glad I did. The bone slid straight out with ease and they had a nice kick to them. Also ordered a beverage and as a bartender myself I can tell you that they definitely don’t skimp. Will be back and bringing friends.

I had a ceasar lunch salad with my sandwich a few days ago and it was great. Tonight I wanted something light to take to work for dinner so I called and asked if I could get the dinner ceasar(grilled romain) with a few grilled shrimp and they said no problem. I assumed the dinner ceasar would be larger than the lunch but was I suprised when I opened my box. There were 3 individual spears of grilled romain and 3 shrimp. It looked like soemthing someone didn’t finish eating. The shrimp were great and what salad I had was good but it was half the size of the lunch salad. I learned my lesson at fast food drive through’s to check my meal before I drive away, I should have done the same here. Very VERY disappointed(and still hungry at work)

I’ve tried twice to eat at Mathews Kitchen and both times they have been closed during their posted hours. I’ve heard great things, and I love to support local business, but I’m done. You know how you get business? By being open.

Pig wings, son! They’re so good. The staff couldn’t be nicer. They’re great. I appreciate Mathew’s efforts to do good things for the community like the Festival of the Flying Pig.

This place is great… A cross between your moms kitchen(where you feel comfortable and homey) and an upscale restaurant(where the food is elegantly plated and tastes amazing). I love the way Mathew’s plays with both sides of the kitchen – the table is white cloth and fancy glasses(bring a first date!) yet covered in fresh butcher paper(bring the kiddos!). The menu is short and elegant but you can really order what you feel like eating… there’s no line about«no substitutions» on the menu. Then to top it all off, Mathew himself makes rounds to say hi to everyone and make them feel welcome. He does it so well that it makes you feel like he must know you from somewhere… To top it all off, the food is excellent. I’m so glad we have a place like his in St.Louis.

3.5 We came here specifically for their interpretation of chicken and waffles. I say interpretation because no traditional waffles were present. Instead, they fry 2 large chicken breasts in a waffle batter, the drown it in syrup dotted with tiny bacon pieces. It was satisfying, but way too sweet-the syrup pool was too much, a nice drizzle would’ve tasted better to me. Service was good. The $ 13 price tag for the dish just wasn’t worth it, I felt underwhelmed by the food. A side dish or some bread would’ve elevated it.

Went for lunch on a weekday. Pretty cozy atmosphere, dimly lit with some natural light. Good menu. Moderate pricing. Average service. Didn’t care for the teeny bop pop music, but the server said they play more relaxing music in the evening. Ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it was great. Wonderful bread. Got the Caesar salad with it. It was good but had too much dressing on it. The house made chips were warm and were tasty. My husband loved the pig wings and said there is no reason for him to eat chicken wings again, after having the pig wings. Looking forward to trying their dinner menu and will see if I can bump up their star rating.

I swung in here for lunch after a long morning of Black Friday shopping. Quaint comes to mind for the interior. They have a nice selection for their lunch menu with 2 soups, 4 salads and 10 sandwiches. Half of the sandwiches fall into the $ 9 price level, half in the $ 12 level, but every sandwich comes with homemade chips, pickle and a cup of soup or salad. I hadn’t gotten my fill of turkey from the night before, so I went with the turkey and havarti club on sourdough with a cup of the tomato bisque soup. Both were delicious! And it was more than enough food to fill me up even after a morning of combating crazed shoppers. Service was good, and I’ll definitely be back. Pros: great lunch specials, good service, delicious tomato bisque soup Cons: not much to mention here

The place is intimate and quaint and during dinner hours very dimly lit, making it hard to read the menu let alone see your food. It’s a good spot to be romantic or for girl’s night. Our waitress was Kayanna whom was very nice and knowledgeable but we noticed when we asked for our bill she was too eager to collect payment when she literally just dropped the check off 2 minutes ago. I tried the drink of the month a Pumpkin Brandy Alexander which was delicious. I would describe it as a pumpkin eggnog with brandy. We started with the popcorn scallops and fried spinach which was amazingly delicious and surprisingly went well together, loved the touch of parmesan cheese sprinkled over the fried spinach. We both ordered the fried chicken for our entre. The chicken was ok, but clearly needed more seasoning, the mashed potatoes with bacon gravy and the brussel sprouts with bacon were good. I was disappointed that the website states a roasted garlic cheddar biscuit but our dinner came with buttermilk biscuits which were cold… really!!! Also the website list the fried chicken as $ 15 but that’s not what the bill indicated. This dish is clearly not worthy of paying $ 16. How do you claim to brine chicken but the chicken is bland??? Again if you want fried chicken done right, go to THELIBERTINE or PORTER’S FRIEDCHICKEN Now the owner, Mathew whom was gracious enough to correct the over site and refund the difference understands the concept of customer service, but not his entire staff. The older woman with the long dark hair pulled to the back whom seats you and sits on the side of the restaurant completing miniscule tasks whom obviously has no idea of customer service, whom will run away repeat and future customers because of her mouth and worthless two cents whom had to issue the refund needs to know and learn the value of customer service along with keeping her worthless opinions to herself. It’s one thing to make a mistake, own up to it and correct it when it’s your fault but it’s a whole other matter when you lecture and belittle a customer for a matter that was your fault and resolved by the owner and not his peon. This woman is lucky she did this to my BF and not me!!! This place better figure out the value of a customer and customer service, ASAP!!!
