Onyx Room

I am in the industry here in San Diego, l went to Onyx for the first time with a group of fellow industry members. Told the gentleman in front that looked like he was in charge that we hold a vip card that is fir industry members. He said that there was nothing he can do for us and we would have to pay full price. As l looked through my vip booklet it clearly states we were suppose to get free entry on a Thursday night that we were there. I will make sure all my friends and also felloe industry friends we are not welcomed and should never return. Yes fellow SIDEBAR, OMNIA, FLUXX, CAKE, AD, AND PARQ friends of mine, this establishment does not follow the guidelines for San Diego’s VIP Express industry cards. I will never step foot and spend a dime here again. Poor staff lack of knowledge. smh

Horrible experience. The people at the door need to be more educated. I had a guy tell me that my ID was fake and he was going to take it. I was so upset because they obviously did not know how to tell the difference between a fake ID and a real one. He wouldn’t let me in and I had to threaten to call the police because he was going to take my ID away. Get more educated or experienced people to know how to check ID’s from out of state better. Rude staff. Don’t go there

HEYYYYYY! this club aint so bad! lol 2 dance floors! one top for hip-​hop. one bottom for latin music. the drinks. umm not too sure. i pregame before hand soooo. the bathrooms are really close together. share men and woman hand sink with a waiter there. cover is like 10 bucks when i last when. soo if you have nothing to do and just want to dance. this seems like a nice place to go. dance causal i guess/?

Wow I was so disappointed with my time there. Here on business and heard great things about this spot from several people around San Diego so a group of us decided to try it out. When we arrived it was very sparsely populated, even for a Thursday night, and the vibe was not at all what I was expecting. We ended up drinking our first round and then we left to move further up the road to find more fun.
Drink prices were as expected in San Diego

I would leave a review on the actual club, though the doorman would not let me in. He was convinced my driver’s license was fake. Me and my friends stood there for 10 minutes while he looked at my ID. He even threatened to call the police. We asked him multiple times to just give it back and we would just go somewhere else. Then his conclusion was that it was fake and he was going to confiscate it. My real ID which I needed to drive. I felt I had to tell him my life story of obtaining the driver’s license before he handed it back. I know it’s just procedure, but next time actually get a scanner machine to make sure it’s real instead of making up stories. Very awkward and lame experience.

Onyx is very unique compared to other night venues I’ve been to! I absolutely love it! They definitely know how to throw a good party and make it worth your time!

This place is one of the cooler clubs in the gas lamp if you really dig on the Urban sort of feel. It has a cool exposed brick and the bar staff was actually pretty cordial, which you don’t always find in a nightclub atmosphere.
Bathrooms have the whole unisex concept thing with the one big longer sink. Overall we really enjoyed this spot and thought it was the perfect mix of dance club and big bar.

I had a terrible experience going to this club, I went on my birthday with my sister and before coming here we had a couple drinks like most people. Unfortunately I had eaten way too much of the fatty food and for someone who usually eats healthy and who used to be 500 pounds, my body automatically rejects the fattiness. I had to use the restroom to throw up because I was not going to obviously throw up all over the dance floor. So we were having fun and all of a sudden one of the guys that works there pulls me to the side and tells me I have to leave because I am too intoxicated, to which my sister asks how is she too intoxicated if she is not falling, she is not doing anything. We both just wanted a logical explanation to why we were being targeted, so I asked «just because someone vomits does that mean they are too intoxicated?» All these guys at the door except for one or two who work at that club were uneducated and didn’t even bother to give a proper explanation, the worse one was the one who told me I had to leave, he even threatened me with jail when I was asking how am I too intoxicated. Last time I checked this is the US and I have the right to an explanation if something unfair is being done to me. They treated us like we assaulted someone or did something wrong which we obviously didn’t, all we wanted was to celebrate my birthday; my sister was crying because she wanted this to be a special night for me and not even 20 minutes in we were thrown out.
Don’t come here!!!

This club is downstairs underground.
There are two different rooms. The first room has the largest bar but the smallest dj stage.
While the other room has the smallest bar but with the bigger dj stage.
The first room could definitely use a remodeling, because it looks like I just walked into some hole in the wall casino bar with ugly carpet. The other room has a few VIP tables around the back walls, and it was a tiny bit nicer in there. I can say that it’s pretty well air conditioned, but at the same time it wasn’t super packed on a Thursday night.
I solely came here to see a special guest DJ. Otherwise, this place is definitely not on my top list to go to. It’s pretty ghetto. The main room is like the ratchet room and the second room is just like whatever else alternative music they’re hosting that night.
I feel like this club has potential, but they can definitely start with remodeling the whole place cause it looks grimy.

This is the best bottle service experience I’ve ever had! Showed up at 11 and the line was really long but Daniel got us in right away. It took a few minutes to pick a bottle and then these hotties came out with flashing lights and confetti and a birthday sign for my girlfriend. Daniel and the girls came back and checked on us pretty often. The best part is the express lane to the bathroom and not having to walk through a bunch of people to use the bathroom. My girl and our friends had a blast. Thank you Onyx!

CHECK IN FOR $ 5 OFF COVER! I wish I did. We went on a Thursday night and it was $ 5 for girls and $ 10 for guys. Found out about the coupon when I was checking in randomly when we were on the smoking patio taking a break lol.
The entrance is very cool because it’s these stairs that go underground. It made me feel like the club was a secret basement getaway. The hip hop room plays good music, though pretty mainstream but it’s so loud that you don’t care because it sounds really good anyway. The edm room is pretty dead but the cooler temperature in there is a very nice break from the packed hip hop room.
Smoking area is by the entrance so you’ll have to climb up and down the stairs.

Checked our their Unilocal page and website before I came and I thought it was funny that they say they don’t allow Nikes or Jordans on guys. I was worried that you had to be really dressed up but it didn’t turn out to be that strict.
We came here on Thursday night at about 11pm there wasn’t much of a line and we had to pay cover. Guys were $ 10 and girls were $ 5. I wish I knew there was a $ 5 off cover with Unilocal check in –_​_​_​–
After you pay you get to go inside the fence thing and that is their outdoor patio/​smoking area. Not too crowded there were probably like 10 people smoking and chillin outside. Then to get in the club you have to go this flight of stairs. It’s like you’re entering a secret clubhouse. I could see it being troublesome for some drunk folks or girls with heels.
When you enter there’s pretty large dance floor with a bar in the back. This floor played hip hop/r&b popular music. It was pretty crackin. there’s like couches around the borders of the room so you can chill for a bit if you’re thighs are sore from twerkin too hard. This floor was pretty packed and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was another dance floor deeper into the club and down a few stairs. This second floor played more EDM-​y music and seemed larger or maybe it was just emptier. Not that many people on this floor and it was pretty empty/​spread out.
Overall it was a good time. Pretty crackin on a Thursday night. My only gripe is that water was $ 4 for a tiny Fiji water bottle but it’s Gaslamp so it’s to be expected.

This place was perfect. Celebrated a friends birthday last night. Got on the guest list and didn’t pay cover. Dj rags was the best upstairs. I kept getting drinks from a bartender upstairs. She was super sweet and made the drinks STRONG!!! The security guard even helped tie my friend’s shoe because we were already faded. I was so happy I went here.

This was my third time coming to onyx, but my first time experiencing bottle service. I cannot compared onyx to other Sandiego nightclubs because this is the only nightclub that has 3 rooms with different music playing. Anyway, my friends and I had an absolute blast. The place was packed, but what do you expect? The host Alex Razo made the whole process easy. Alex really made us feel VIP. I recommend you text him next time your here. 760−880−0424

My 5 friends and I came here for Rumba Lounge on a Friday night. We took the Bachata class which was pretty cool! We all like Latin music but more so the raggaeton so we spent the rest of our night in that room. The theme is woodsy, oak tables and couches that look kind of like trees or bushes. The big mirrors were cool. I liked the lighting especially. Not really daark with strobe lights like upstairs. I could actually see people and where I was going. Everyone had such a good time! There was a bunch of cute Latin guys that taught us a few moves. Music was really upbeat! We had a few basic drinks and beers from the bar. Sometimes there was a few minutes wait and sometimes they helped us right away. Went upstairs for a bit to check it out but preferred the Latin music.. Good vibes all around. I recommend it!

I enjoy the place, and the people around, but Tea Party Thursdays has been a bad experience. I’ve been harassed by the head promoter of top shelf, Justin Miller, who claimed to be the owner of the place, and tried to kick me out due to personal reasons. I paid to enjoy my time there, avoided him for respect of the club and my close friends, only reason why I would even go there in the first place is to support the rest of my friends and fam, just so happen we know the same people. I never started the confrontation, my friends and fam can vouch for that and even security. Besides just that one person everything else is fine.

Please change the DJ. Just trash. You know those DJs that play throwback songs that aren’t old enough to be throwback, this is him. All night! I don’t think I heard anything released after 2010.
This was a Saturday night. Hopefully they have a better DJ that called out sick last night.

Bottle Service:
I recently purchased bottle service here for my birthday on a Saturday night. We were at the tables up stairs closest to the DJ booth. Getting 17 girls somewhere together at the same time is difficult! What I really appreciated was that they didn’t give me a hard time when people showed up late. Called a number from face book and reserved with Daniel who was really friendly and knowledgeable. He checked us in just before 10:30 and had us pick out some bottles. The booth was roped off behind a rail, really comfortable and the bench is pretty big, not cramped like other places. They put up a couple balloons and confetti at our table, nice touch! 2 girls brought out our bottles with some light sticks and confetti. They poured our drinks throughout the night and were pretty good at checking up on us to make sure we were happy. The girls even came to dance with us when they had time. There were also light sticks and a little confetti drop that was super pretty!
The music was really fun!!! A pretty good mixture of pop and hip hop. A lot of people actually dance at this club and not just grind on each other or nod their heads. It was a really good party crowd except for a few people who got too drunk. That was really entertaining watching them get dragged out Lol. Bathroom line was a bit long later in the night but what can you expect. Didn’t get to check out downstairs this time but have been there before. I can’t dance to Latin music but that’s what they play down there!
Overall a great experience. Will do bottle service again!

My gf and I got in here even though we were wearing sweaters and boots– definitely lax on the ladies’ dress code. There’s usually someone at the corner handing out free entrance tickets so be sure to grab one of those. We ended up downstairs where the reggaeton was on full blast. Only downside was the DJ didn’t play the song we requested!

One star because I can’t give any less. Quite frankly I am disappointed from the first and only experience I had at this establishment. The staff scheduled on 1÷9÷16 at the main entrance are in need of some customer service classes and not to mention guidance on what is legal and what is not.
Few friends and I got in line and the majority of us got in perfectly fine. But one of our friends was singled out. She had an out of state ID that seemed suspicious to the bouncer. Not only did they make a huge scene calling it fraudulent, but also decided to confiscate the ID ruining the entire night. They referenced an out-​of-​date ID guide to verify the ID was real or fake. When they collectively decided to confiscate the ID, not once did they call their manager to help us out. Instead they told us that we needed to seek out a policeman ourselves. Meanwhile the entire party is waiting outside of the club wanting an answer. All eight of us. With no help from the cops we ended up leaving not spending a dime in the place considering how they treated us from the start. I wouldn’t recommend going here if you’re out of state visiting. They may confiscate your ID too and then you’re out of luck.

Loved the music so much. Top hits mixed well. Not overly mixed. Each track played for a good amount of time and slid into the next one interestingly. There was a lot of «hype». Crowded on a Saturday night but in a good way. The crowd was pretty cool. Nice, fun people. No creeps. There was girl dancers but they weren’t overly slutty dressed and danced pg-​13. I could do without them though. Security guards were respectful. And the drinks were strong! Woo. There’s a downstairs but didn’t see that part.

Hip Hop music on top, and Spanish music on bottom. Two floors of fire ass music! What’s not to love?

Great place to meet new people have a night for yourself and friends will definitely try to go more often loved the music and the vibe

This club is great! First time in San diego and I had to come here with all my friends! Recommend it!

Onyx was dope! I mean for what it is; size, dance floor, mini bar, dancers, etc. The crowd was my type as well which was perfect. The DJ was playing good hip-​hop and rap music which were up to date and moved the crowd.
Me and my boys went on a Friday night was before Halloween but the area was still full of energy. Women here are still pretty shy with dancing with the guys but luckily I kept breaking the ice. I got to get my freak on with multiple women so that was great.
I think Onyx should be the first destination for an outing at night in Gaslamp because it’ll boost up your energy and it’s good enough to wear you out unless you feel like club hopping.

This is more than likely a 3.5 or 4, but I just wasn’t as amazed with it than I thought I was going to be.
I went for my 22^nd birthday with my best friends just in from out of town and for what it was worth, we had a great time. Would I go back again? Probably not unless someone really wanted me to go.
However, they basically have two separate night clubs. I loved the Latin room! I had tons of fun there — I wish I had spent my whole night there actually in comparison to the main room of the Onyx.
Pros: The drinks we got were pretty decent. $ 8 for a vodka cran, but that is the way of clubs and downtown in gaslamp. Dj was great fpr both levels. Go-​go Dancers were awesome too. Definitely a more positive upbeat local crown for the Latin section. The main part of the Onyx was your standard hip-​hop and EDM style music with the standard promiscuous men/​women, standard creeps, but at least everyone was dress well (per dress code).
Cons: No seating unless you buy bottle service ($$$-$$$$). There were either some rather sketchy guys there, and a surprisingly older crowd (the older variety were mostly single men/​women looking to score with the younger singles or pick up on those getting bottle service). Bathrooms were small. Ladies, you know this downside. Air flow… nonexistent in either level of this club. We had to step outside into the humid post-​rain air on several occasions to make our lungs feel like they were getting something fresh. We also didn’t see on the website that there was a cover charge of $ 10. We probably missed this on the website, but honestly, the Latin space is worth that alone, maybe 5 for the Onyx main floor. So it balances out? Meh.
All in all, a good night. But this isn’t the spot to go as a local for something amazing and extravagant as far as clubs go. I would rather go somewhere else and pay a little more, especially after reading reviews for Omnia! I would only go back on my own accord for the Latin side.

Somehow I usually end up in SD during the week when nightlife options are limited. I like to dance so Neo-​Soul Tuesdays is a life saver! Great hip hop and R&B, chill crowd, and good bar service. I think they charge a small cover, and there’s never a line. This is my go-​to spot on Tuesday nights in SD. Good times. :)

One of the better clubs we were able to get into, they played catchy music that made you dance and they kept good crowd control so it didn’t get stupid crowded. Fun night from what I can remember.

Lame club way over hyped and over priced went in and it’s super dead. Front door guy was a d — bag with a superiority complex. Had VIP passes as well as others and they charged us $ 20 each to get in. If it was fun I wouldn’t have felt ripped off BUUUUT THIS PLACE SUCKS! total scam… we went to «COYOTE UGLY» (a few spots south) and had a freaking blast no cover charge atmosphere was blazing and DJ and girls serving drinks were KILLING IT!

It really is just that, a room.
Not very big, not a fan of the crowd, or music.
No drink menus, also like to be inspired and see prices, not just order something off the top of my head.
Long line to get in, $ 10 cover which I thankfully got out of due to someone in line giving me free entry tickets.
Stayed for a few minutes, wasn’t feeling it at all.
Tried to give my husband a hard time about wearing sneakers, looking at the people inside, it didn’t matter one bit.
I’d rather go to any of the bars in the area, then wasting my time in line here.
Bouncers were nice though.
