it looks like this place closed down… well, GOOD. i don’t know anyone who went here and DIDN’T get sick from the food. don’t go here, even if it reopens elsewhere:(

Is this place a joke? Because it’s hard to figure out whether it’s a real restaurant or not. It took forever to figure out when it was opened, then when we finally did it was such a disappointment. The interior was so ugly I felt uncomfortable, so cheaply decorate with cracks in the floor just waiting for you to trip on them and fall. The sushi is overpriced and OK at best, not to mention feels like the portions are very small. The waiters seems lost, like they’ve never had customers and don’t know what to do, which sounds about right because they were so empty. The sitting is awkward, want privacy? Too bad, you get to make new friends with the people slabbed right next to you, and the bathroom is so hard to find and again ugly décor. Overall it was just a cheap exoperience, oh well, thank god I know better than to set foot there.

THISPLACEISNOWCLOSED. Never got to try this place, we have driven by this place so many times and finally got around to trying it but when we walked up there was a tiny sign inside the window that said they had closed their doors and that they appreciated all the support from its customers.

Is this place closed now? I went there on Wednesday night yesterday and it looks stone cold like it’s been shut down. Certainly hope not. I love the flavor of the food here.

Sad to say this but Surfside Sushi is now closed as of November 18th. The owner would like to thank everyone for their support and business the last 15 years!

My favorite sushi spot in PB. Ike at the sushi bar is incredibly funny and talented. My favorite roll is the Rachel Roll. Yes, named after me. :) It comes with spicy tuna topped with salmon. Their rainbow roll sin shrimp is great too. Their sushi is great and their prices are reasonable. Don’t forget to check out their 60% off rolls Monday.

PROS: … ample parking(it’s a paid lot but they allow 2 hours for restaurant patrons)… nice people… comfortable… the game on TV… reasonably quick service(please note there were only two other parties in the restaurant)… CONS: … pricey compared to most sushi places… sushi was OK at best… … remember there are at least ten other sushi place in the MB /PB area … go ahead and try them first…

Very nice sushi place. They have a great 20% discount on sushi during happy hour. I really love how Surfside decorates your sushi order. When it comes to the table it looks like a piece of art. Service kind of slow sometimes, even not during busy time.

I have driven by this place for over 10 years and never bothered to give it a brief glance. Last night wife and I decided to venture out and made a stop here and I tell you what, truly a gem in the rough. Chef Ike, was fantastic with accuracy, presentation, and most importantly service. They have an excellent selection of fresh fish and and a variety of daily specials. The presentation and quality of food made this place one of my top sushi joints in San Diego. If you are lucky you’ll get to try the Spanish mackerel or the sweet shrimp. Of course, what is evident and what comes with great presentation and freshness in the seafood world, is the price and you will have to pay higher then average prices. Happy hour is every day from 5PM to 7:30PM. With 20% off of all roles and various drinks. But the killer deal comes on Mondays with 60% off. We will be back

I’ve been to some of the«première» sushi joints in SD and even though Surfside doesn’t come up in the conversation with the Ra’s and the Harney’s, it probably should. The sushi is just as good if not better, and the atmosphere relaxing and comfortable. If you want a top notch specialty roll, order the Bentley. It’s $ 20 bucks a pop, but you truly get what you pay for. It’s amazing. The fish here is quality and the guys behind the sushi bar crank out amazing rolls. Some of the other reviews of Surfside Sushi are bland and lame, but when it really comes down to it, this place holds it’s own in the sushi heavyweight battle.

Happy Hour 20% off Sushi from 5:30 — 7:30! Bonus! Unlike some of the Sushi restaurants in San Diego this one is owned, operated, and staffed by mostly Japanese. My wife can speak to the staff in her native language and get a response in same. Many will agree with me that«anyone can cook anything.» I dabble in italian, Mexican, Thai, Mediterranean, Cajun and Japanese myself… However, people with a tie to the actual region(grew up there, actually learned or studied there, etc.) seem to do it better than others. Surfside has a nice little place at the end of the strip. The food is VERY good offering new and inviting variations on sushi as well as many traditional and American favorites(California roll, Crunchy roll, Eel roll, etc…) We came in here and got our Sushi fix, my 7-y/o is a huge fan of Sashimi, I had some wonderful new spicy tuna rolls, as well as a mushroom appetizer that was phenomenal. My knock down my a star is not necessarily the restaurants fault. They have a short covered entry way and patrons will sit there to smoke making non-smokers walk through the smoke to get in or out. This shouldn’t happen. Smoking area should not be right in front of the entry way. Smokers hate me if you want to. You have a right to smoke, but I/we have a right NOT to have to deal with it. Give this place a try, get there for happy hour it’s worth it! Sláinte!

Be on a sushi roll lately(boooo puns) and this place just kind of disappointed. Maki was just too expensive for what you end up with — taste is ok, but not worth the price. Regretted going here on Saturday night, just wasn’t a $ 50 experience, felt like we got jobbed. Heard Monday is fun, but a business shouldn’t be judged on happy hour alone.

I come here for their happy hour(which offers AWESOME deals, but varies day to day)… And if you come for HH, come early Bc the line gets pretty long before surfside even opens… My husband orders sushi here. We have tried many Japanese/sushi restaurants in various areas in SD, and he’s happy with the rolls he gets here.(Their crunchy roll being one of them) No complaints. Their chicken karaage is probably one of my favorites out of all the karaage I’ve tried at other places. Their agedashi tofu is good too… Dining inside where the sushi bar is located is nice and intimate. It leads to a patio like dining area with more seating, and that area is good for larger groups… Overall a casual vibe, and HH can be a little chaotic, Bc if the crowd and the amount of sushi they’re whipping out and serving… But it’s a fun and yummy experience. Worth trying!

Awesome! Might be my new sushi spot. Great sushi and awesome service! The sushi chefs Ike and Zo are super nice and funny. My favorite roll from tonight was probably the snake roll. I’ll definitely be coming here more often!

This was the only sushi place that I hit up during my stay in PB and I thought it was a good solid sushi joint. I went with the Chef’s Recommendation which was an assortment of sashimi(Toro, Spanish Mackerel, Uni, Yellowtail, Live Shrimp, and Clam) beautifully presented on a large clear platter. It included a live shrimp with the head removed. When the waitress brought it to the table, the head was still moving even though it was detached from the body… now that’s fresh! My friend was apparently starving as she ordered 3 different dishes; which, aside from the ramen, I don’t remember the other 2 despite trying them both… that’s what I get for writing a review nearly a week after I’ve been there. Anyways, they also offer a few of the usual Japanese beers, along with a decent sake selection.

Still just ok. Food is good, specials are good, service is just not that great. Have been twice in the last year when it’s not crowded, sitting in a good /viewable spot and just had really slow service. The only roll I’ve had there that I disliked was the pizza roll, mainly because it’s made with a pizza top that sits across the top. The rest of the rolls were great.

It’s sad when your server treats you badly because you don’t order very much. Came here today, a Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant wasn’t very busy at all. Ordered one spicy tuna roll to share because we just wanted something light. We saw our completed roll sit on top of the sushi bar for 10 minutes, waiting to be picked up by our server, a non-smiling, older Asian gal. She walked by it at least once and ignored it. When we finally got it, it was tasty, but not very big or spicy. They were also skimpy with the wasabi. Took forever for her to bring us our check, and she didn’t check on us to see how everything was. Our check came to $ 9.16 for one roll and 2 waters. Not worth it, in my opnion. Also, the ladies room smelled like a sewage or gas leak. Yuck! Won’t be coming back to this place.

A-Ok. I only come on Mondays to get my sushi cravings out of the way. I’ve been here numerous times and the wait varies when I go depending on the day and depending on how many people I go with. The crunchy rolls used to be a lot better. Now when I order them, it comes out tasting premade and cold. The panko crumbs aren’t even crispy anymore! I think it’s cause they know every table orders at least 2 plates of it so they just make a whole bunch in the kitchen. Get the rainbow, caterpillar, spicy tuna, spicy hamachi, and crunchy! Keep in mind you get what you pay here on a monday night. The sushi isn’t the best, but it’s good for the price.

I’m only going off of Monday Happy hour(their 70% off deal for rolls). This is DEFINITELY pocket-friendly for college students who don’t want to spend 20+ bucks but want to get full off of sushi rolls. I normally line up an hour before they open at 5:30 and usually the line isnt long. Still have to wait a little to sit, but that’s okay. Their sushi quality is pretty good, but nothing to boast over. You get a little bit better than what you pay for. So, don’t bring your richer parents or coworkers– they will not be impressed at all with the quality. Normally as a guy who eats a little more than the average person — I’m very content/full with 5 rolls. I come out spending around 15 bucks after tip. Their waiters are very busy so if you want assistance, you will probably need to use smoke signals. Just kidding. But it’s not the best serving but it’s understandable. In the end, COMEHERE once. You wont regret it unless you come too late(they stop their happy hour at 7:30 — indicated by turning on the house lights).

When I found this place I knew I had to drag my BF here one night for 70% off sushi. I texted him at least 5 times at work making sure he understood that there would be an hour long wait. But of course when we actually get there he complains about how I didn’t warn him we would be waiting… Moving on. The wait did take us about an hour but we were prepared with our Kindle and Nooks. I thought that it would be a line but it’s like any other restaurant where you put your name on the list. So don’t just blindly stand in line and get your name on the list. Maybe you’ll see the hostess we had that was really freaky looking with cat eye contacts and blonde hair. We finally got seated at the sushi bar and was able to give our order directly to the sushi chef. We got a crunchy roll, spicy tuna, caterpillar, and rainbow rolls. I expected to wait at least another 20 min but was pleasantly surprised when the rolls came out in less than 5 min. After watching the chefs I found out it’s cuz all the rolls had been premade and were sitting in saran wrap just waiting to be cut. So not really the freshest. We walked out with a bill of less than $ 20 which is pretty good for sushi.

70% off rolls aka a stuffed stomach for under $ 10? I’m down for that! Caterpillar roll and spicy yellowtail roll are always my favorite. I like to strip some of the rice off the rolls so that I can consume more fish meat than rice. Shady, I know, but imo these guys add too much rice to their rolls :/ This place I only come on Mondays for the cheap sushi. Other than the incredible deal, the rolls are just a bit over mediocre, and the long line if you show up a minute too late might drive you insane. Either come twenty minutes early, or prepare to wait as long as two hours!
