Since this is the closest sushi place to my house, it’s my go-to. I’ve dined in a few times and it really is pretty dimly lit, but the service is fine. However, I usually get it to go, and 9 times out of 10 I’m happy with the sushi. The crunchy roll has become my favorite, but sometimes it seems to be made not quite as well. A little lacking in flavor. But I’m a wasabi addict so after adding that and some soy sauce and spicy mayo, it’s not something I generally notice. This might be on the upper end of what sushi places usually charge, but if you get one of the less ‘fancy’ rolls it’s nothing crazy. I’ve spent more on a manicure.

Worst restaurant I’ve ever been to they have horrible rookie survive that are all high schoolers and can’t even sit a family of 5 we wanted 1 hour also there food is overpriced for the port quality fish they give you. In conclusion I defiantly recommend that you should never come here or eat here or buy anything they have THANKYOU

I just a had to write a review; I eat here all the time and the service is magnificent! The servers are great! Amber, Mike,(that sexy redhead) Ashleigh, and Ryan are defiantly my favorite. They always greet you, and remember you it feels like your not just another number. By the way, there are 4 sushi chefs that are just great! Stephen best custom hand rolls, jay and Sean are my favorite to come in have a drink and pass time with, and Rob makes the best sushi and custom rolls I have ever had. Don’t believe me? All i can do is recommend that you walk your hungry ass in there, be swayed by one of these fine young servers, and be amazed by the food! I absolutely love sushi on the rock!!!’ You guys rock my sushi socks!!!

This is my absolute favorite sushi place! I love the owners and frequent their locations often. I have had the best experience with them catering events as well. Everyone raves about the quality and taste! For the best sushi in San Diego, you have to try one of their locations!!! Yummy! I’m getting hungry just drooling about it now!

Horrible service! Amber and crew are clueless! Whoever owns/manages this place ought to be ashamed. Do not go there.

Meh… Thank goodness for gift cards! We put an order to go: 2 bentos, chicken fried rice, a Bruce Lee roll, fried potstickers and edamame. It came out to $ 72! The food was just okay. For the amount we paid, it should be some pretty special food. Not worth it! I would rather make the 20 minute drive to Convoy and eat some real Japanese food.

This is one of my favorite sushi restaurant to go too. I’m surprised I haven’t written a review for this place. All the times that I’ve been here service has always been consistent and friendly. They have a pretty big menu and the food is always fresh and comes out rather quick. I love to order whatever Chef special they have on the board. I have never been disappointed. Their happy hour specials are amazing and I have convinced 2 little boys to eat sushi by coming here and I don’t mean eating California rolls– real sushi. Docking one star for parking as it seems no matter when I come here, the parking lot here is always a mess.

My daughter and I had lunch here a couple years ago and I remember leaving disappointed with the quality and price. A few days ago my daughter was very hungry and craving sushi so since it was too late to go anywhere else I gave them another try. I called in two cali rolls and 1 masago nigiri which came out to $ 21! Well, clearly the prices didn’t improve. According to the menu on the website(which i checked later) it shouldn’t have been that much but that’s what I paid. By the time we got home my daughter was super hungry yet after 1 bite she said she couldn’t eat any more. I tried it and found it was very bland. I think they ran out of rice vinegar and the crab just didn’t taste right. I almost never throw food away, but this was an exception. I realize there’s much more on the menu than cali rolls, but come on. That’s like the most basic roll that a lot of kids and timid sushi eaters order. If you can’t get that right, then there’s something wrong. Although the prices were slightly better, I’m not surprised their«express» restaurant down the road at the corner of Bernardo Cntr and Cam Del Norte recently closed. Won’t be back again :-(

Glad to see a real sushi place in the area. Almost gave 4 stars for a slow hostess but it’s ok.

Great for business lunches. The sushi is GREAT! Sit at the bar for faster, more custom service. They often have a new roll posted on their Specials board. The wait service is a bit slow, so if you’re in a rush(or on a normal lunch hour for that matter), save Sushi On the Rock for a more relaxed business day. Would be a great location for happy hour, but the waitress notified us that as of recently, they no longer serve alcohol.

I absolutely love this place. My family has tried many, many sushi places around San Diego and Sushi on the Rock has definitely earned its place on the top of our list. The customer service is absolutely great, and both the chefs as well as those at the front(waiters, waitresses, etc.) are incredibly friendly and contribute a lot to the great atmosphere at the restaurant. The sushi rolls are very creative and delicious, and I always look forward to seeing what the special is on the board whenever I walk in. My personal favorites on the menu are the Kitchen Sink, Slippery when Wet, The Viking, The Nighthawk(go Del Norte woot woot), and the Sweet Lew, and those are just the ones I remember from the top of my head. The portions are also quite generous compared to other sushi places– I’m currently visiting San Francisco and although had good sushi here too, the portion sizes were a lot smaller. Sushi on the Rock definitely gives more value for your money. And though the sushi rolls are delicious, the nigiri and sashimi are also quite good. I don’t order those as much but when I do I’m always content. I usually order eel, salmon, and tuna nigiri, and have had the assorted Chef’s Sashimi in the past. Definitely the best place to eat at 4S Ranch!

Sushi on the rock is one of the best sushi places I tried in San Diego. Friendly price and tasty sushi. As a big sushi fan, I can tell the salmon and eel are fresh. By the way, I suggest classic rolls [Rainbow]& [Caterpillar]. It will be the best place for Valentine’s Day.

Very very basic. I wanted to try a different Japanese restaurant in the Rancho Bernardo area because we wanted to see if there is a decent one other than aki hana. Why I give it 2 stars over 3 is for the value of the meal… Price vs Taste/Quality For lunch they do have a lot of specials on the bento boxes but from what I remember no sushi or sashimi was on the lunch menu. We got the beef bento box and the chef’s sashimi special. Bento box’s($ 10) meat had the texture and shape more of beef cubes with teriyaki sauce, the salad in it was decent, the brown rice was well just brown rice, but at least the California rolls were good. Keep in mind they were made with artificial crab still but still decent. Now the bad news. I was craving sashimi so much… The chef’s sashimi special was a serious waste of $ 25. I did not enjoy any piece put on that plate. Even the salmon and tuna were not up to par. It lacked that silky, cold, fresh taste you crave when you order sashimi. WOULDNOTORDERSASHIMIHEREAGAIN!

Best sushi ever! Best staff ever! I can’t eat sushi anywhere else. We have tried so many different sushi places and this is beat them all. They never failed us at all. We bring our families to have dinner or lunch whenever they come from overseas and I hear the same comments once they go back. They miss this place and they can’t enjoy the sushi somewhere else. The staff and the owners are amazing. They make u feel at home right from the first time. once u start coming back they will know what u like without u say anything. Go there u will never be sorry!

I have several complaints about this place. First of all, it is more dimly lit than some clubs that I’ve been to. Every time someone walked through the door, the flash of sunlight would temporarily blind me and I would have to start all over again adjusting my eyes to night vision. This is also the only sushi joint that I’ve been to that did not have a simple salmon roll on the menu, so I asked them to make me one. I wanted an avocado + cucumber roll with salmon on the top, which the waiter estimated at $ 7. The sushi chef messed up my order and gave me a roll with salmon on the inside, which I asked them to fix. The roll ended up being THIRTEENDOLLARS. The waiter explained that a roll with salmon on the top uses a higher/more expensive grade of salmon, which I’m perfectly aware of and do not for a second believe justifies that price. I live in San Francisco and I am very used to over-paying for my food, but this was a rip-off that I haven’t seen even in the Bay area. Maybe if it had been the best sushi I ever had, I could look past the price, but the fish literally had no flavor. I couldn’t actually taste the salmon, or my sister’s spicy tuna. I’m not saying I want fishy fish, but I should be able to taste more than avocado and cucumber.

Taste– *** Service– **** Ambiance– **** Parking– ***** Had an overall ok experience at Sushi on the Rock. It’s not my favorite sushi place, but it’s close enough where it’s very convenient. The chef at the bar was super nice and everyone was very helpful, I just didn’t find the food that delicious. Some of the rolls were innovative, but missed the mark for me. Definitely on the pricey side for what you get.

3.5 stars for an A-OK place to dine. In the ultra-competitive dining market in San Diego I’m surprised at the high ratings people give this place. The sushi is really average, and the prices are rather high. We came for dinner to try out the sushi and drinks, and we weren’t impressed by the quality of the food, especially for the relatively high price. We tend to be sushi snobs but we judge food by the quality and taste, not by the price. There are many other places with much better value and higher quality sushi.

I have to confess I do my fair share of Unilocal reading but don’t review enough. Sushi is one of my favorite food and I frequent this establishment a few times a month. STAFF: The staff at this place is hands down one of the friendliest group of people I have ever seen in a sushi restaurant and I have been to so many I lost count. Chef Robert is great at what he does and is always smiling, remember what his customers’ preferences are when making their food. Ashley the manager is just on top of it along with the rest of their team. FACILITY: Small, serene, and intimate. Very clean, modern and not too loud. FOOD: I am a foodie and an adventurous one at that. So in the world of sushi, the more exotic the better. The majority of the time I go with OMAKASE, which is whatever the chef feels like making that day, or what is best. IMO this is the way to go as it allows the chef to be creative and give you what he would recommend that day. The Hamachi, Yellow Tail Belly, and Uni are all awesome. Then there are some of Robert’s creative creations, its pieces of sushi and sashimi partying with layers upon layers of fresh delectable surprises. Ah, and you have to save room for their ridiculously yummy dessert. Fried churros with molten chocolate cake and gelato… yeap, its a happy ending. PRICE: Good for sushi and portions are healthy. They have price points for everyone, and their happy hour menu is one of the best priced list I have seen out there especially for the great quality of fish that you get.
