We were searching around for a wine bar this weekend after a crappy experience on Pier 39… we figured if we veered off a little bit from the Embarcadero itself, we might get away from the more touristy places and find something that actually has some semblance of service. Google directed us here, and it seemed promising. A wine bar at the Hyatt? That has to be legit, right? Wrong! We entered through a door that had an awning reading«Enoteca Musto». But we found ourselves in some crappy sports-bar kind of place, Knuckles. We sat down all confused, staring at menus full of fried bar food. Where’s the wine? WTF? My husband went on an expedition and discovered a small room down the hall with a wine menu and a sign with hours posted outside(we were there well within business hours). The room was totally empty. Just some chairs and tables. We sat in there waiting for like 15 minutes and nobody came out. What in the fresh hell kind of wine bar is this? What a disappointment. And just now I’m noticing the previous reviewer’s assessment from almost 2 years ago… the only thing that’s changed since then is the service I guess. It got even worse. As in, nonexistent.

What a weird experience. Came in expecting a full bar with different selections of wine. All we got was a ‘private’ room with different seating arrangements. Enoteca Musto is basically Knuckles. We sit down and ask for a menu and get Knuckles’. We asked for EM’s menu. They don’t have one however there are two menus posted in the entrance way. Huh? Then the managers came and asked if we have any questions. Once again, we asked for the menu. One came back and fed us some bull. Something about a new chef and a new menu and blah blah blah. If that’s the case, shouldn’t they have some old menus before launching the new one? Why would you have a menu outside but not have a copy for the customers? HUH? 20 minutes later we ordered the house wine and a few apps. It was so so. The sweet potato fries were soggy but the wings were meaty and mild. The house Cab($ 5 before 7 pm and then it’s $ 8) was OK. Since we trek all the way to Fisherman’s Wharf, we decided to make the best of the situation. I had a good time chatting with my friend but definitely will not come back until the make the necessary changes. I feel like it’s a bit deceptive in calling the place an Enoteca when it really is just an overflow room for Knuckles. They share the same kitchen and bartender. Every Enoteca I’ve been to always has someone on staff that is knowledgeable of the wine list and be able to offer suggestions or pairing. No one was there. Just a server coming over to check on us. I really want to like the place but for now, I’ll steer clear and go to 360 Cellar for wine.

Am loving Enoteca’s monthly wine events! Last week, we enjoyed the Stonehouse Winemaker Evening. Looking forward to seeing how the crew over at the Hyatt hosts the October 7 German Beer Tasting in celebration of OktoberFest. Cheers, Molly
