Lots of food was cold since it sits out. The dim sum was cheap, but not very good. I’d recommend skipping this place for another dim sum restaurant(loads in the area)

Lots of variety in this little hole in the wall, but almost everything we got was stone cold! The chicken feet were the only warm thing(not hot), and were pretty good, but the salted pork and egg was cold and tough(with very little egg… and pork…), as were the dumplings(good taste though). The sweet rice balls were really good — to share, for sure. The place is pretty dingy and the pricing is made for tourists. Oh, and they were out of porridge! Really?

Great dim sum take away, but they also have upstairs seating should you want to eat there. Excellent food.

GOINGTAISHANESESTYLE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This place has a fresh assortment of all kinds of good to great Dim Sum, some of the best is steaming hot(see pics). The women who took care of us & were from the same region of China (TAISHAN) & spoke the same dialect, were super-nice to us. They told my lovely wife that the CHICFEET I SOLOVED there were prep & spiced TAISHANESESTYLE. Many people of this region had/have emigrated to the US& my wife constantly meets people from her hometown. Then they surely yack it up, my wife makes new friends, & we get even better service. The prices were far lower than any fancy place, but of course the three tables, chairs, & such were utilitarian. The only draw back is that if the door was open too much your steaming hot DIMSUM would get cold & not taste so good.
The good thing is that you can order small batches at a time & thus prevent this. They also have an assortment of deserts. Between the taste, the variety, the nice service, & ample seating, I love the place. It was not fancy, but it was far better than the super-popular take out one across the way. I have NOT A CLUE why this place is UNDERRATED. I was glad, since it was not crowded on a weekday. It was much better than the fancy, but horrid places that get low grades, in health inspections in C-town(that Unilocal alerts you to)… but poor sanitation & service is common, in all but, in the UBER-priced ones that are out of C-town & in the business areas of SF. You are likely fooling yourself if you think that the OVER-YELPED places, that have absurdly LONGLINES, if the Bay Area are that much better in kitchen sanitation(especially certain Waterfront ones!). You need to realize that many OTB Chinese who come here & cook, do not have a clue about our standards in food prep nor storage. My MIL surely does not, but my Nephews & Niece thrive here anyway. Even my wife leaves things over-night to my horror. We both had bouts of mild poisoning at home… ugh! Her brothers, are on the opposite pole & own restaurants in either SF Bay Area or Vegas, and get a «A» with health inspections. I have been back in their kitchens many a time, and I tried to get my wife up to those standards. Anyway, & in conclusion, if you want good fresh DIMSUM&CHICFEET ””””””””””””””””””” that tastes great, & don’t mind the ambience of a humble hole-in-the wall at bargain prices, go here… LOADSOFLOCAL OTBCHINESE(WHODONOT Unilocal) SURELYCOMEHERE!

It was a raining day on Sunday and we went to Chinatown for Dim Sum. Of course, we used Unilocal to search for options prior to arrival, and found a few places with great ratings. Unfortunately, when we got to Chinatown we realized none of these places have seating areas! Given the weather, we had to settle for this place because it has a dining area. Well, the ratings were accurate– the food really wasn’t that good. Many of the items were served cold, including the pork buns they took out of the steam tray! It was also strange that my food items were served to me on a thin paper plate, because I didn’t have a place to pour soy sauce into for dipping! So, I’m giving this place two stars, one for having a dining area, and one for the food server being reasonably friendly… but sorry, no star for the actual food.

Just like the rating says: Meh. I’ve experienced better. Had pork dumplings and turnip cake, three each, $ 5 total. At least the price wasn’t too bad.

Tiny place with a good amount of seating compared to other fast food dim sum places in Chinatown. The food is mediocre but it’s as homemade as it can get. «Homemade leftovers» is a better description. Tastes like my grandmother made it but it’s been chilling for a good day; still delicious but the quality isn’t amazingly fresh. I love how there’s a good amount of seating here and each table has condiments available. I love smothering my dim sum in hot sauce and soy sauce. And it’s so easy walking over to the front and ordering more food. Another plus is their thai tea! Very satisfying. 3.5÷5

Possibly the worst siu mai I’ve ever tasted. This is also very expensive compared to other competitors. I did not even finish my food and that NEVER happen with dim sum. Won’t be back again.

Terrible. Literally the worst dim sum I’ve ever had. The steamed pork bun had cloyingly sweet dough, and we couldn’t eat it all, and ended up eating the pork with a fork. The fried rice wasn’t flavorful and contained several rock hard grains of rice, as well as overcooked peas. The taro puffs were cold, since they were kept unheated on top of the glass display case, which was gross not only because they were chewy, but because cold pork filing is unappetizing. To be fair, the cilantro shrimp dumplings were tasty. P. S. The bathrooms are super icky.

Went here on a whim, plus the boyfriend wanted some Dim Sum. Wouldn’t come here based on service, yet I was amused by how deciding food was done here since I’m used to sitting down at a table and having food carts go around. Plus the staff seems to push recommendations for you more than friendly suggestions to get you to move on. For 10 pieces of dim sum and Thai milk tea, I think I spent about $ 20. Boyfriend said he liked the taste of the dim sum, and I thought it was okay. Setting isn’t the cleanest, but we handled it.

$ 20 for ha gow, shui mai, him bao, fried rice with two cokes. The shui mai had been sitting out and the pinch dough on the edge had become dried and hard. Unedible. We left half our food uneaten and then departed. Avoid this place

Went there for breakfast on Friday morning. It was one of the only place open before 10 in the neighborhood. Pros: absolutely delicious food, wide choice of Dim Sum, and menu with pictures to help you ordering. Cons: not the cleanest Chinese restaurant, takes cash only(Chase and Citi ATM at the corner of the street), few tables.

Tourist trap for sure. Took my wife around Chinatown and she was looking for a fried dumpling with pork inside. We came across this place based on its location(and obvious name). I felt snacky so she ordered me shu mai dumplings as well. Both items were too salty and packed too much MSG. Both items were $ 12 for 8 pieces total! Pass this place and keep walking, there are other spots in the area that are much better and worth the extra calories burned.

Good spot for dim sum. They have pictures on the wall just in case you struggle on ordering. Too much competition with 3 other dim sum spots across the street. There are a few tables. Cash only spot.

Sweaty, sticky, and the glass is covered in a thin film… you know the food is authentic. I’ve definitely had better dim sum, but I come back to this place more for the environment, which I realize sounds awful, but just reminds me of when I used to live in Asia and I love it. Cash only so come prepared. I don’t speak Chinese, and the ladies don’t speak too much English, but pointing at what you want works perfectly fine. I always get chern fun(shrimp in a fat rice noodle) cause its my FAV, and then try something else new every time. The sesame balls are decent, kind of too thick for my fancy but I can’t help but order one. If you’re getting it to go, they put your food in a plastic bag for you and give you a fork so you can eat it on the street. So authentic. So fun. I got 5 different things for $ 4.75… can’t beat that! Also, the dim sum just sits out all day and you definitely want to eat things hot, so I would suggest asking for the food from the bottom trays. There’s additional seating and a bathroom upstairs.

If you remember anything from this review let it be this. Don’t just come to House of Dim Sum because it has more open tables than other restaurants in the area. There is a reason for that. I decided to go to House of Dim Sum after realizing that I wouldn’t be able to sit down at the other two spots in the area that I wanted to eat and I regret it. Walking in, I was confused by what cost what and how everything worked so I quickly just chose a couple of the things that they had in the front and that was hastily suggested to me. They microwaved the noodles making them dry and gave us the last of their dumplings. Then I chose a couple more things as well. All said and done we ended up with a plate of noodes, 8 dumplings, a black roll, a shrimp roll and two arizonas at a total of 19 dollars. Me and my girlfriend were disappointed, it probably wouldn’t be enough to satisfy us, but we dug in anyways. The noodles were dry, but still had a little flavor and the black roll and the shrimp rolls were tasteless. The best thing on our Plate was the pork dumplings and the way the pork tasted still leaves me questioning the definition of pork. The only thing I can say about this place is that if you know what you want and they have it ready, you will be in and out. Other than that I cannot suggest it at all.

Not much of a selection, but if you have a quick craving for dim sum and want to be in and out, this is the place for you. Has mostly mainstays like shrimp or beef rice rolls(har /ngow cherng), shrimp crystal dumplings(har gow), phoenix talons(fong tzao), shu mai, egg tart(dan tot). Nothing too crazy. My favorite, the rice rolls, is how I judge a dim sum place. It’s the item that takes the most skill to perfect. House of Dim Sum’s rice rolls had the perfect chewiness and fluffiness, but they were a little too thick. Shrimps were cooked nicely, not overcooked, and had bounce to the bite. The sauce was balanced but I wish they smothered the rice roll with it, not just placed a dainty little container of it off to the side. In summary: Overall, basic, decent quality, cheap, and very quick. The fast food of dim sum.

Sadly, we blew it. We visited SF’s Chinatown and managed to find crappy dim sum. Dang it! We actually walked into Delicious Dim Sum, but they only had 2(occupied) tables, so we wandered over yonder to find somewhere else with seating. Curses! At House of Dim Sum, you order with an employee, and s/he’ll plate your food on a tray for you to take upstairs where there’s tables. The ha gao(shrimp dumplings) had a weird, elastic, rubbery texture that was extremely off putting. Fried sesame balls were hard and lackluster, and the char siu bao was 80% dough and 15% bbq pork, and 5% of some substance that was like misplaced mayo. Eek. The only really decent dish was the shu mai. Overall, the dim sum left much to be desired, and the establishment could have been cleaner too.
