The word that comes to mind to describe this tiny store is the Spanish word bodega, although the proprietors are African, not Mexican or otherwise Latin American. And as already mentioned, said proprietors are about the friendliest convenience store dudes you’ll ever meet. The kind that never fail to ask you «How’s work?» or «How’s school?»
And the chicken is damn good. Nice and spicy and flavorful. It’s my favorite fried chicken in the city, and that includes Ezell’s. Just don’t wait until too late in the day or it’ll all be gone, and they only make the one batch every morning.

I drunkenly walked to this store one fine evening to buy some smokes. I came home with fried chicken instead. I don’t really know what happened to me when I was in there and I all of a sudden forgot what I was getting. The fried chicken was quite tasty though or was I just too drunk to know better. But my neighbor who frequents that place said that they do have the best friend chicken in the area.
The two guys that work here is super nice. If you want something and they don’t have it, wait a few days or a week and mostly likely they will have in stock. They have great selections of beers too.

This is a home away from home. My boyfriend lived approximately 30 ft. away from this grocery before we moved to Chicago. These guys are the nicest people in Capitol Hill. This convenience store felt like a modern day «mom and pop» store — very welcoming. After my first visit they remembered who I was — down to the fact that I would buy two red bulls on the days we were hungover, to the fact that Vampire was our wine of choice when we were obviously too lazy to walk to the nearest regular store.
Howell Grocery, you’ll always have a special place in our heart. Just don’t sell out due to the land value in Capitol Hill before we have a chance to move back.
