Sushi Fukyo has closed permanently — and it is so unbelievably depressing. But all is not lost! Mas is now at Sushi Spot in Tarzana — he’s only doing dinner shifts right now but will start doing lunch/dinner in September. I have a preference for Sushi Fukyo but where Mas is now is pretty dang good too, although I have to confess that anything made by Mas is good. Go check it out!

If anyone knows where Mas, the chef-owner, has gone, please post! Was this the best sushi place in LA? No. Was it a great neighborhood spot that I was glad to have nearby? Yes. The blue crab handroll was always awesome. And the sauteed chiles were a good opener. Simon’s Café next door is also suffering even though the food and service are great. If you haven’t been, do check it out! The location is not that bad! C’mon, people, support your(good) local restaurants!

I don’t know what happened… About a month ago my co-worker and I walked up to Sushi Fukyo with visions of yummy sushi dancing in our heads, only to find the place closed?! At first I thought maybe they were remodeling but when I called the phone # on their website, it was disconnected — you don’t change your phone number during a remodel. I have no idea where Sushi Fukyo(and Mas) have gone. If anyone finds out if they’ve moved to another location, please let us know! I’ve never found a Crunchy Roll that compares to theirs, the Santa Ana Heat was one of my favorites, and Mas was always a great host/chef.

My girlfriend & I came here for dinner on a Monday night because we didn’t feel like cooking. I ordered the Shrimp tempura dinner, which consisted of 5 pieces of shrimp tempura &3 pieces of vegetable tempura. I also ordered a Crunchy roll. My girlfriend ordered the sashimi dinner. First came the Crunchy roll. The order came with 8 pieces. It tasted good with the sweet sauce that they put on it and it was indeed crunchy with the flakes of tempura that covered the roll. We had to wait 15 – 20 minutes for both the sashimi & shrimp tempura and there were only 3 other small parties in the restaurant. The shrimp tempura was oily, but not crispy. Not the best tempura I’ve had. The sashimi didn’t taste fresh at all. I wanted to give them a good review because the service from the waitress was good, but I will not be coming back.

If you’re serious about your sushi, I wouldn’t recommend this place. When I went, the place was empty(although, to be fair, it was lunchtime.) The service was good and the owner seemed friendly enough, however the fish slices were thin and seemed more room temperature than fresh. Also, I’m always skeptical when most of the sushi rolls on the menu are actually deep fried instead served raw. Really, the sushi is the only thing I don’t like — the place is comfortable, the service is good, and the only customers I saw seemed like regulars that enjoy their dining experience. Unfortunately, I can’t get past the sub-standard sushi offering. Wish I could give it more than two stars, but with better sushi options nearby, I can’t justify it.

This place is rather dim on the lighting for table seating area… i guess that’s ok if you’re not really trying to see what you’re eating or the people you’re eating with. had assorted sashimi appetizer. presentation was nice but the inconsistency in size for the different fish was a bit odd. –obviously not all slices are going to be same, but they specify the number of slices in an order. the salmon and albacore were super tiny slices(which they compensated for by adding an extra slice of each– but which also leads me to believe that it’s some left over piece or the very end piece– which then leads me to question the freshness). Also wondering why the tuna was extra cold, comparatively speaking. the ikura was also really cold… but good. friend ordered rolls. they were average in diameter, basically same as all other restaurants, but they were super thin… it’s like they took a half order and halved those. i don’t normally order rolls at all so i can’t really comment the taste. i personally don’t like imitation crab. presentation was nice. the green beans(not edemame) were yummy. but why did they come out before anything else? you’d figure cooked things take longer to come out– besides miso soup. the server was very nice, was more or less good about tea refilling. there was some lag time towards the end, like taking forever with the bill, but i’m just going to assume that was because it was closing time, and she was closing out the register or something. their fried banana dessert… SMELLEDAWESOME… tasted wasn’t as awesome as you’d expect from the smell was it was still pretty damn good! it’s one banana cut into 4, deep fried, dusted with cinnamon, laid over vanilla(you have choice of green tea) ice cream drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauce.

This is a very unique place because There were a Japanese guy chef and caucasian girl chef. The girl chef actually said hi to me when I walked in. I was surprised I had to pay for parking there. Serioulsly? I had to pay for parking for this place? I was disappointed when they said no monkish liver. I was even more disappointed when the girl also said no uni. I almost walked out when I saw teriyaki dinner on the menu but I didn’t have time since I had to eat before my facial appointment at Burke Wiliams. Spicy Biscotti: what an interesting name. basically it’s spicy crispy tuna. The crispy rice was not as good as the other places but its tuna was tasty. 3 stars. Albacore: Room temperature sushi, not vinegary and the rice was overcooked and dehydrated. It came with a dipping sauce. 2 stars. Blue Crab Cut Roll: the girl brought it out and brought it back to the chef to make sure it’s the right order. It was my first time trying blue crab and me likey. It’s basically california roll with blue crab instead of imitation crab. It was delicious. 4 stars! Hokki Clam: the rice fell apart before I even touched it. 3 stars. Amber Jack: Chewy like Bubble Yum. 2 stars Red wine infused strawberries and mango ice cream: you call this infused? seriously? It was not infused, the mango was too ripe, but the ice cream was pretty yum. I told the girl I had to get be out of there in 10 minutes and asked if it’s possible to order that and got my check in less than 10 minutes. She went to the kitchen then said yes to me. 10 min ended up almost 20. 2 stars One thing I noticed… there was either no wasabi or very little wasabi underneath the fish 2.75 stars Sushi Fukyo is not yummylicious!

We got lucky in finding this place, thanks to Unilocal!we decided to go here after checking out a few reviews while heading home. Its a nice small restaurant with a very zen, yet fun character. They have little buddha candle holders at each table, then they have all these retro Godzilla toys that hold a Reserved sign, very cool and fun. The owner is very nice and the sushi was excellent. They make a few very unique roles that are fantastic. Rolls like Oh My God and Mighty Arnold were a refreshing take on rolls. Great mix of flavors that come together in a burst of yummy flavors in each bite. They also make a fantastic vegetarian roll! Plus the normal sushi is also very good. We’ll be going back here again, especially since its on the way home for us.

Horrible sushi. Really disappointed. The sushi pieces are small and frankly don’t look that fresh. The server seems friendly enough but alas, the food was not very good. No wonder it was empty when we were there!

Me and my bf were looking for a place where we could grab a bite right before a movie in the ArcLight Cinema at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. We saw there’s a sushi place in the very mall, but after reading a few bad reviews on Unilocal, and deciding we didn’t want Cheesecake Factory or P.F. Chang’s(which are also at the mall) we just thought we’d find another place nearby. Sure enough, Sushi Fukyo is very close to the Sherman Oaks Galleria Mall! So I called, and the very kind waiter explained about parking. It’s in the back of the property, but once you pass the restaurant there’s only a highway entrance, so make sure you make the correct turn. Once you park in the back(2 hour max meter programmable with coins or credit card), you can go in through the back of the restaurant. We sat at the sushi bar. The staff was very eager to please and making sure we were happy with the food, which is nice. And the sushi was superb!!! The Fukyo Roll(I uploaded a pic) is amazing — and the Oh My God Roll(I did predictably say OMG when I tried it), the Ninja Roll and the Mighty Arnold Roll. I think the reason why the place wasn’t crowded is because of a lack of advertisement(they don’t even have a website), because the sushi is GREAT! For dessert, we had a very uncommon in Japanese restaurants red wine infused strawberries and mango with vanilla ice cream. It’s warm fruit in a red wine honey-ish caramel with the ice cream. Light and sinful!(Which is a combination very hard to find) Can’t wait to go back!

Very friendly staff! Nothing out of the ordinary amazing or unique but it’s a sushi joint that I wouldn’t mind visiting again. That’s a lot to say granted all the sushi places all over LA(specifically, Ventura Blvd.)!

This place is very very good. Went there for lunch and ordered the«oh my god roll», «hot night roll» and a «spider roll». Very yummy… Very friendly service. I must say that compared to the other places I’ve been to around Sherman Oaks this place is pretty damn good.

I(very) recently moved into Sherman Oaks and am on the serious hunt for all the little local spots I might soon be frequenting. So, basically, I’m living by mobile Unilocal right about now. There are a ton of sushi joints within a 5 mile radius of my new home but Sushi Fukyo jumped out at me immediately on here so off we went to Sepulveda. I’ve driven past Fukyo a zillion times, even having had a good friend live directly accross the street for a while and never noticed it. The parking is a little tricky — it’s behind the building and the only ways to get in are before the restaurant on Sepulveda or over on the side, off Ventura — both of which are inconvenient when you don’t realize where you’re going! But once we got in, it was well worth it! The hostess was very sweet, the sushi chefs were friendly and attentive, and the other patrons at the bar make you feel like you’ve been coming here for years right along with them. The collection of godzilla dolls with«reserved» signs around their necks to mark reserved tables was fantastic and a nice touch in an otherwise pretty standard-looking sushi joint. The ninja roll, oh my god roll, tofu tempura, blue crab hand roll and salmon roll were all good-sized, great quality, and reasonably priced. All that food plus a Coke and a large Sapporo was only $ 45 so that’s definitely a good deal! I’m not gonna lie, saying the name of the restaurant made my roommate give me a «huh!?» when I got home but I will most surely be returning to Fukyo soon.

I’ll warn you now that I’ll be messing up the names of the orders! I went here with my fiancé last night. OMG… lieterally. They had an OMG roll that is GREAT! BTW I did say OMG after! LOL My fiancé is not a fan of Sushi. He usually gets the Tempura. He loved it. The shrimp were nice and FAT… Very fresh. I ordered the Shasimi. Hmmmm… AWESOME! The only reason I gave this place 4 stars is because we sat at the sushi bar and ordered a dinner plate. Chef mentioned that they don’t serve dinner at the Bar. =(So we moved. LOL I was like I want Dinner Dam it! I mean I’ve never sat at the Bar before so I was like why not. I’ll order a roll and dinner but it didn’t work out that way. I love that this place was empty. We were there and another couple. SWEET! The food was awesome! The service was awesome! I definitely gave my compliments to the Chef! We will be moving in soon to that area so we figured why not get to know where the good spots are! Thankfully we found a good one!!! Please try the OMGROLL! Once you try it you’ll say OMG! LOL

The man and I have been looking for a new sushi spot for a while, so we decided to give Fukyo a whirl. While it certainly wasn’t *bad*, we won’t be rushing back. We ordered hot green tea and iced tea for drinks — the hot tea was good, but I had to ask my waiter to refill it, and the iced tea was bitter — no bueno! We started with the sunomono salad, which was presented very nicely and tasted pretty good, but came with a little pile of imitation crab, chopped up. No sauce or anything — just fake crab. Most of the places in Los Angeles tend to serve real crab… just sayin’. The tempura appetizer arrived next. The batter was thicker than I like — not at all light and crispy. My shrimp hadn’t been de-veined. The man claims his were fine — maybe I just picked a bad one. Then came the sushi. We ordered maguro, hirame and hamachi. The fish was ok — not the best I’ve ever had, by a long stretch, and the rice was very«loose», so it was difficult to eat. After finishing our sushi, the waiter came over to ask if we had gotten everything we ordered… wait…isn’t that his job to know? We were missing 3 rolls — half of our meal! He walked over to the sushi bar, asked about us, and they started making our rolls. The rainbow roll was… ok…not fantastic. The other roll we got(Big Fat Jesse Roll, maybe?) was tasty — interesting combination of sauces. We had also ordered the Philly Roll, but by the time the waiter came back to ask if we’d gotten everything AGAIN, we were full, so we asked them not to make it for us. All in all, we won’t be coming back. It was fairly inexpensive, sure — but I’d rather pay more for a delicious meal!

Yes, I used to be a «SUSHISHEEP.» Always going to the same sushi spots, afraid of trying something new.(Sushi can be pricey and in these financially trying times I want a reliable bang for my buck, hence the sushi joint mainstays). But last night when Katsu-ya was packed more than usual and Iroha’s air-conditioner was dead, my sweetie and I decided to finally give this place a shot after driving by for ever. The sushi here is EXCELLENT! The REASON: This is a small place with a modest menu, therefore QUALITYCONTROL is much easier for the head chef /owner. I saw him personally approve every single dish before sending it out. And he is definitely very TALENTED, as everything I had was absolutely finger-licking delicious(the«Heart Attack» appetizer was especially memorable). When’s the last time you noticed exceptional quality control by the OWNER at one of the more popular«sushi factory» spots? (I even heard Fukyo’s owner tell a customer that he doesn’t DO take-out. Now if this isn’t dedication to quality, I don’t know what is!) And though there are some other small and quality-minded restaurants on Sushi Row(Asanebo springs to mind) Fukyo is much more moderately priced! GO, GO, GO! Before the usual 3 P’s take over and this place becomes Packed, Pretentious and Pricey!
