YMCA of Greater Seattle – Dale Turner

It’s a nice, updated, clean place to work out. All the equipment is in good working order, with all sorts of new cardio machines. It can get really busy in the mornings. The two level, covered parking is great on those cold, rainy mornings. The pool is also very nice however there’s usually only a couple of lanes open due to water aerobics and other organized activities in the pool so you need to come early and be willing to share the lane. They have a great two story rock climbing wall that looks like fun although I haven’t tried it yet.

Tonight I canceled my membership after 2 months and originally, I was hesitant to join the YMCA because I figured that there would be a ton of kids running around. I understand that it’s a facility geared towards activities for the whole family. However, the real issues for me are when teenagers are disrespectful towards other members and aren’t considerate of the time they spend in the hot tub while other members are sitting on the side waiting. Or when there are teenagers fighting in the hallway and a boy trying to go into the women’s locker room. I went to notify the front desk staff of this and another member had also complained right before me.
These teens don’t have any parents around and younger kids are left to run around and play on the cardio machines. I’m friends with a former YMCA staff member and she said that this was often a complaint even when she used to work there and I see things haven’t changed since another Unilocaler wrote about this back in 2010.
It’s just not worth paying $ 50 — $ 70 a month for a single membership. They should have a single person membership for $ 30 since I don’t have kids using the play center and I can’t use the pool due to bratty kids. So that leaves me with classes and machines. I can get that at another gym and pay less.
Pros:
— Facility is large and newer
— Supervised play area for kids (Great for those parents that actually use it.)
— Large indoor pool and hot tub
— Cardio machines and individual TV’s
— Wide variety of class options throughout early morning and evening hours
— Parking in the garage has been easy
Cons:
— Monthly cost is too steep compared to other gyms
— They limit the hot tub to 6 people at a time (this is when the kids hog it and no one enforces a time limit, yet the lifeguards are always on top of kicking people out if too many people are in at once).
— Staff are not very welcoming or informative. When I first came in for my trial period, they didn’t offer a tour or tell me about my free personal training session. I learned more about the center from another member that I met at a class.
— Staff doesn’t enforce any guidelines or take actions when kids /​teens misbehave.
— Showers are dirty and people leave clumps of hair on the floor

I was a member of the YMCA for 9 years. I went into work out one night and put my belongings in the lockers provided and locked it with a combination lock.
When I was done working out, I went back to my locker to get my belongings. My lock had been cut and my back pack was gone with all of my personal items. My wallet with my Drivers License, Credit Cards, my keys and all of my clothes.
I went straight to the front desk and told the staff. The first response I got was sorry there is nothing we can do.
What, all of my belongings were stolen from their facility and he did not even offer to call the police.
I was given the managers phone number. I called the next day and several times after. I did not receive a call back for almost a week.
I was told they would look into it. I did not receive another call for two weeks, after I called several times.
They offered me $ 50 off my next months membership for my troubles.
I don’t feel like my safety or security is of any importance at the Dale Turner YMCA.
I canceled my Y membership after 9 years and will not return.

Always clean and a friendly staff. Parking can get a little tight on weekends but we always end up finding a spot. If you have kids there is a free kids club so you can work out. Also tons of classes and fun activities. Also go in to find out membership costs it’s on a sliding scale.

The building is nice, the staff are friendly, but the weights area and cardio area are on the top level and about 10 degrees warmer than most gyms. It makes working out hard tough because you overheat more easily.
The only other issue I have is people bringing their children and sitting them on the various cardio machines to watch TV. When you pay this much for a membership, they should keep the kids off the machines if they are not actively using them. If your kid is just going to watch TV, leave them at home. Some people actually want to work out when they go to a gym.

Something for everyone in the family. This place has a ton of different options for everyone in the family. I am especially fan of the teen programs. I would recommend this place to anyone of any age.

I have been a member for about 2 years now and still LOVE it! The facility is always clean, they are great about making consistent improvements and upgrades, the staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the people who are members are friendly as well.
They are super family friendly and have plenty of great programs and classes. I appreciate that they have a facility improvement week every year and take input or comments from members seriously.
I still highly recommend Matt as a trainer! He continues to encourage me in my fitness journey and challenges me with new exercises. His abs & core class continues to be a favorite of mine!

I didn’t end up getting a membership here because the thought of paying to work out honestly makes me cringe when I can work out for free at the apartment complex I live in or with my body at home. However, this was a GREAT gym with TONS of classes that you can attended included in the membership plus a pool, hot tub, etc. There was a bunch of different machines you could use to work out all areas of your body, seriously everything you would ever need. The facilities were always clean and the staff always friendly! Loved it here for the few free trail sessions I had.

My son was petrified of going under water and we’ve done several group classes at the Y. Natasha recommended private swim lessons to help him with his fear. After three lessons with her he is wearing goggles, blowing bubbles and not crying when he gets splashed in his face. She is very patient and he looks forward to class with her. We are so grateful as swimming and water safety skills are so important.

I am a member of the Marblehead, MA YMCA. I contacted Dale Turner YMCA prior to my Seattle visit to see if I could use their facilities with my own YMCA membership card. The process was quick and painless, and I was able to use the Shoreline YMCA during my visit.
The Dale Turner Family Y is a great Y! The equipment are mostly up-​to-​date (especially the treadmills, which were top of the line), and the classes were great! I visited the Dale Turner Family Y three times in three days. I used the treadmill and rower, but also took advantage of three classes: yoga, pilates, and kickboxing. All the classes were good, although the yoga instructor was too fast in his instruction. The kickboxing class, though, was, well, ass kicking! It was AWESOME! I sweat a lot in general, and certainly during work outs, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten as a great work out as I did with the kickboxing class! I was drenched in sweat from head to toe after this class.
Overall, this was a great experience. The instructors, staff, and members of this YMCA are all really friendly. I wish all YMCAs would replicate this one.

This YMCA is clean, with nice equipment, and seems well staffed and run. It’s actually surprisingly nice.
People seem pretty mellow in there, too. There to work out, but no one is up tight about it.
We take our kids, and they love it too. The child-​care facilities are really good.

I love almost everything about this facility. There is no contract to join, the membership fee is reasonable, the cardio and weights equipment is fully functional, I’ve never had to wait for a machine, and the class schedule is extensive. The pool always has 2 guaranteed lap lanes, even during aquatics classes. The location is easy to access by bus, bike, or car, and there is lots of parking in the parking ramp adjacent to the building. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
The only thing I wish they would change is their enforcement of their rules. Another reviewer mentioned that young children are not supposed to be in the spa (whirlpool), but I’ve also seen very young children – even toddler age – in there without adult supervision. The life guards have looked directly at this happening multiple times and done nothing to enforce the rules. Similarly, there are rules posted about children playing in the cardio/​weights area, yet there are frequently young kids with no supervision playing on machines and not wiping them down when they leave; staff walks right by this multiple times and does nothing. I am all for a family-​friendly facility (in fact, that’s one of the reasons we joined the Y vs. other fitness centers in the area), but if parents are not going to follow the rules and watch their children during a family visit to the Y, the staff needs to step in.

Recently I moved to another area and have been using a new YMCA that had no customer service. I miss Dale Turner and their great and caring team. They do stand out against other YMCA’s.

What can I say, this facility is awesome.
I’ve been to two other YMCA’s in the area, downtown Seattle and Bothell. Nothing wrong with them, but they are old. What’s not to love about Dale Turner Y? I love everything, especially the huge pool, the court facility for basketball and volleyball, and the children’s «Adventure Zone.» They offer all kinds of classes, from exercise to learning new skills, to cooking. They have family nights of all sorts: Christmas shopping, movie night, parent night out, potluck. The cardio equipment is nearly second to none, with personal video on nearly every machine.
Since we became members (8 months ago), the one area I would fix immediately is the weights. The area is simply way too small, and the equipment needs upgrading. Not everything can be 100%, even the staff, but this is pretty close.
Due to it being a Y, and its location, be warned that this is a very family-​oriented location.

When to Y as guest of member. It very spacious location with plenty of work out aerobic equipment and range of newer Weight Training Machines and free weights. Membership includes a towel service with is night touch and over the facility is very clean and well cared for. The pool is a 4 lane 20 meter pool that is kept on warm side which is find with me. There a small hot and kids pool with fun waterfall as main part of the play area. Overall if you live close by this place is worth checking out for membership.

I was recently here as a guest of a friend. The facility is beautiful! Everything is new and squeaky clean. Parking is available in the garage, a few spaces around the building, and on the street. The staff that I saw and encountered were friendly.
One of the gyms has a rock climbing wall. Although my child was not interested in it, I had fun watching other kids climb. The gym itself was very large and left plenty of room for running around. The pool is fantastic and I love the slide in a separate section from the rest of the pool. I didn’t make it upstairs but saw a number of different rooms here and there with tons of activities going on.
I used to work out (then I got lazy and accepted it). However, I recently lost some weight and find myself with more energy. I’m currently looking for a gym and I’m glad my friend brought me because it was the nicest YMCA I’ve been in.

They have everything you need, AND MORE! I have been going here since March of 2012, and I have not stopped! Very clean facility, which is a must for me in a gym. The people are beyond nice and always go out of they’re way to help out.
Also one really nice thing about they’re membership is it is on a sliding scale. So your membership fee is based upon your income. They have yoga, arobics, physical therapy classes and more!
Just a great place to workout, trust me!

I like this place. The people at the front desk are usually always happy and friendly. The place is very clean [in fact, I think it’s closed for a week right now while they super clean it].
They’ve got some good classes. Advanced Pilates is great, the rock wall is fun if you can ever figure out when it’s open. Avoid going on Zumba nights, and if you don’t have kids, go when the daycare is closed and the place is empty! When the kids are there they sit on the machines and watch tv, but I guess at least some of them walk slowly =)

I loved this gym. I really did. I went here for a few months before my introductory rate expired and my rate went up to $ 60/​month. Yikes! I enjoyed the clean, new facility and personal tvs but not enough to spend $ 60/​month on. Definitely a nice, new, gym with lots of extras for someone who is willing to pay the price. I think the price is much more reasonable for a family but for a single person it just didn’t make sense for me.
Another reason the YMCA wasn’t perfect for me is they don’t open until 8am on Saturday and Sundays. Not ideal for someone who wants to get the workout out of the way on the weekends!

I’ve been a member for over six months now and joining was the best thing I ever did. The staff is friendly and I’ve never had a poor customer service experience during check-​in or from any of the lifeguards. In both departments, some are more personable than others but no one has been outright unpleasant.
The fitness area upstairs is well maintained with plenty of machines to go around. The locker rooms can get crowded during peak times but I’ve always been able to find a locker, just not a lot of changing room. Water pressure and temperatures are both decent too.
I like coming here because it’s not a place where people come to be seen. They come here to work out for whatever the reasons and they go. Stop in and ask for a tour, they will gladly oblige and you can see for yourself how cool this facility is!
