Very good place to grab lunch ! They have a lot of lunch platters to choose from. Very cheap prices. I have been twice for lunch and the survive was great and food came out perfect. My only complaint is the chicken quesadillas don’t come with sour cream. A side order of sour cream is an extra dollar. Kind of cheap if you ask me . Definitely worth a try !

This place is great. Good food and good service! I got the number 6 from the lunch menu and loved it. Salsa is so flavorful and fresh and the chips were good too! A+

Good, but far from the best. I had a chili relleno and it was covered with a white cheese sauce, which I didn’t care for. Actually everything had this sauce on it. Maybe some would like it. Service was good, though.

Our go-to for a sit down Mexican dinner. Get the queso fundido and a combo platter, drink a Modelo with your friends, have a good time. Apparently some other Unilocalers are upset about the wine selection(it’s a Mexican restaurant, what do you expect?), but seriously grab an import beer or a Jarritos if you’re abstaining. Good food, good prices, casual atmosphere.

we had dinner last night food was excellent but service was horrible there was only three tables in the restaurant but we still had to wait almost 15 minutes for someone just to come and take our drink order. we ordered our food at the same time, they never came back and checked on us other than bringing the food(which was the cook not the waiter) and the check. We only got our first round of drinks never any refills. This is sad because this is the second time this is happened to us at this place and we wanted to give them a second chance thinking it was just a one time coincidence. it used to be the best place in town for good food. will not return until they change their waiting staff. The only reason I’m giving it to two stars and not just one was the food was excellent.

This is a great restaurant as far as the food and service. Tables are a bit small and the seats a bit worn, but the food is great and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Parking is excellent. Everything on the menu averages between $ 10.00-$ 12.00. We had a Chimichanga special for $ 7.95 each that included beans and a salad and it was great! Coming back for sure…

The best Mexican restaurant in all St. Augustine…. Enchiladas, burritos, guacamole and chips … Try the Dos X BEER. Always in frozen mugs. It’s a small place maybe … But it’s good. You wold see.

This is a small restaurant, the waitstaff was very pleasant and friendly. We had to wait to be seated because half the tables needed bussing, which was cleaned up pretty quickly. We had the Fish Tacos, which were very good, not the best I’ve had, but very good. Nachos Supremo were a bit mushy. Margarita on the rocks, very good, didn’t skimp on the Tequila. Great for a quick bite, not a fancy nite.

If you are really craving Mexican food and in the area check this place out. I thought the waitstaff was sweet. Food is really good and prices are reasonable.

Very disappointed! This restaurant was across the street from my hotel. The reviews weren’t bad, and it was just starting to rain. I ordered a glass of Cabernet and a nice water while I looked at the menu. I was given the coldest glass of wine I’ve ever seen without ice in it. Also chips and very spicy, very delicious salsa(but in a styrofoam cup). I then ordered a chicken enchilada, and queso fundido y chorizo. The food came very quickly. I taste the wine is horrible. I let it sit for a few more minutes so that it is not so cold, taste it again, and it is just horrible! I think it was in the fridge for a few days and turned. The chicken enchilada was delicious. Good meaty, and a nice mole sauce. The queso was soupy with a thick layer of chorizo grease floating on top, making it even runnier. I said something to the waiter about it being extremely soupy and not having a spoon to even get some out of the bowl to put on a tortilla. He never did anything about it, nor the terrible wine(rung as merlot). I made sure that the hotel knew of the poor food and wine. I’m sure they will consider this information before recommending the restaurant to other hotel guests!

My boyfriend and I wanted to find some authentic Mexican food, so we decided to try this place and loved it. Very good enchiladas and rice. The nachos with beans and cheese were hands down the best I’ve ever had. We ordered sangria; the pitcher was huge and it was delicious. My only gripe is the service. The waitresses were just standing behind the counter ignoring us. We stood there awkwardly for a few minutes before seating ourselves, then someone came over. The place was pretty empty, so it isn’t like they were slammed and couldn’t acknowledge us right away. Other than that, the experience was great.

Waited 5 minutes before being greeted. All the waitresses walked right by me never saying a word.

Epitomy of suck. Basically empty restaurant and told us there was a 10 minute wait. Rude and no one ever said anything to us after we sat and waited. Won’t be going back for sub par Mexican.

Great mexican food at a good price. The steak is rib eye cut and is declious. The salsa is great tool! They have hotter salsa in the back that you have to ask for and it’s hot. Our whole family loves it!

When frequenting a Mexican restaurant for the first time, I tend to prepare myself for the worst. Most Mexican joints I’ve been to are mediocre at best, and the experience usually ends in disappointment. Happily, this was not the case with El Potro! Our party of four was seated promptly on a Saturday evening. Tortilla chips and salsa were brought out first… two baskets of chips and two bowls of salsa, which impressed me.(«She’s easily impressed,» you say. Ah, but I assure you, I am not!) The salsa was almost gazpacho-like; it tasted fresh and bright, and had a nice kick. We ordered the guacamole, and it arrived soon after, freshly prepared. It wasn’t particularly noteworthy, but it was certainly enjoyable to us hungry folks. Next came our pitcher of margaritas. For about $ 16 we each had 2+ glasses of the stuff, a real bargain! They were pretty tasty, too. So far, so good! Combing through the extensive menu, I just wasn’t seeing what I wanted. I was really in the mood for chimichangas, but they didn’t list a vegetarian version. Deciding to take my chances, I asked the server if it was possible to have a special meat-free chimichanga prepared. It took a bit of dialogue and a consultation with the manager, but they were more than happy to accommodate my request — resulting in a fantastic Spinach & Mushroom Chimichanga platter. There were two good sized chimis on there, each filled with a layer of rice and a flavorful blend of sautéed spinach and mushrooms. Topped off with a red sauce and touch of creamy, mild white cheese, and served alongside a generous helping of refried beans, these chimis were satisfying on many levels. Everyone at the table agreed that they should be added to the menu! The beans were really good, too — thick and savory, very well seasoned — and, the manager assured me, completely lard-free. Other meals at the table included shrimp fajitas, a combo platter with chile rellenos and a bean burrito… and something else I can’t remember, unfortunately. But all of these things were thoroughly enjoyed as well. It should be noted that our server was attentive, sweet, and super friendly. She scored extra points by catching a comment we made about it being Mom’s birthday… later bringing us a complimentary fried ice cream, complete with song and a birthday candle. Very thoughtful, and a perfect ending to a great meal.

This is one of the few Mexican food restaurants I’m willing to go in the Jacksonville/Saint Augustine area. I work not far from here and eat here probably once a week for lunch. The prices are reasonable, the lunch service is quick, and the food is authentic. I particularly like the Lunch Fajitas for flavor, presentation, & value($ 10 for more than I can eat). The staff is very friendly, albeit a little unconventional. They frequently have their baby behind the counter being spoonfed his lunch, or when you walk in the hostess will jump up from a booth where she was sitting to seat your party.(But IMO that just makes it feel like a family-run establishment and adds to the overall experience.)
