I have eaten at smok’m Mikes twice, I didn’t like it very much, the food was poor at best. I won’t be back

We’ve eaten at Mikes a few times. If you really know bbq then you’ll want to try this place. As you walk in you’re greeted by the waitress. You can sit on picnic style benches or regular chairs. Service has always been good and friendly. I’ve eaten here during a Thursday lunch hour and it was packed with people. Most places in the Sugar Land area cook their meat in a gas oven with pieces of wood thrown in. This guy serves true pit bbq. Drive around the back and you can see it. I always get the chopped beef sandwich. It’s loaded with meat and served on Texas toast. I like the toast idea because you taste more of the meat than a bun. Mike doesn’t put sauce on his meat, but has his homemade sauce on the table. I believe in this concept. If a bbq joint serves their meat covered in sauce then they’re trying to hide the taste of the meat. Think about it. Why are most bbq joints afraid to serve sauce on the side? Is it leftover, dry, or fatty? I for one never liked a soupy chopped beef sandwich. I’ve never noticed a large amount of fat in Mike’s chopped beef sandwich. You can actually see the meat and the«bark.» Most places you don’t notice or taste the meat because they poor sauce all over their meat and sandwich. There’s no telling how much fat is drowning in the sauce at these other places. There are some bad points. I don’t really like their fries and their onion rings have the tempura style batter. I have ordered their fried pickles and their ok for being the frozen/breaded pickles. Fried ok is ok. If he would start hand dipping his fried items it might make things better. Regardless, I’m there for the bbq and I think it’s good.

Just moved here from Penn State and have missed having some good BBQ. Been to a lot of places in the area, nothing has really impressed me. However, checked out Smok’n Mikes, and have to say, I was great. Have to try out the Ribs. Juicy, fall off the bone, nice smokey flavor. Brisket is awesome as well.

Love love LOVE Mike’s. I’m surprised at the review that calls the place«unwelcome» because it’s the most welcoming atmosphere I’ve ever encountered at a restaurant. Mike is one of the nicest guys ever, and the waitstaff is always super nice and super friendly. Admittedly, the food is a bit fattening. Some people don’t like alot of the fat in their meat but all my friends love the falling off the bone tenderness, the handmade bbq sauce and the delicious fries. I personally like the shredded beef sandwich and the baked potatoes. It’s a good price for good award winning bbq. Highly recommended.

This was actually my first BBQ in Texas. I was starving to death when my husband came home with it so I dug in while it was still hot. The ribs were like jerky. I’ve only had ribs 2 or 3 times in my life and I’m pretty sure they’re not supposed to be that way. The brisket was really fatty and I spit out most of it. The beans were very bland and the sauce was whatever. I actually wanted it out of my house b/c the smell was permeating everything and it was grossing me out. Really wanted to like this place but I’m sorry it was pretty gross. I give it 2 stars b/c my husband ate a lot of it, but he was hungry and I’m sure that was the reason. I’m kinda scared to try more BBQ now.

Nice place, business was a little slow when we where there but on the plus side Mike came out to say Hello & see how things where going, that doesn’t happen that often. The BBQ was VERY tender. My Wife had the Ribs that fell off the bone. The price is good but the portion size is a little small but still a good meal.

Darn good, finger-licking, smokey, melt in your mouth BBQ! I got the 2 meat plate and 1 side. I always have to go for ribs, brisket, and potato salad; the staples of BBQ in my book. First of all, the ribs were huge! These were no baby back. fingers in your cheeks ribs, they were spare ribs! I didn’t even need to put sauce on them. They were so moist that the meat melted off the bone! The flavor was smokey and the rub was perfect, yum! The brisket was juicy, moist, and tender. Their homemade sauce paired well with it. The potato salad was a nice palate cleanser between each bite of meat. The staff was super friendly! Unfortunately this place is so far from me but well worth the drive.

Mike is awesome and takes pride in his ribs. I think the best in Sugar land. FYI Smokin’ Mikes won four out of the five categories for brisket and ruled the tenderness category for ribs at the 3rd Annual BBQ Smackdown

Smok’n Mike’s Real BBQ is a nice little joint that does up some great BBQ. I ordered the two meat plate with two sides and it came out within minutes. The brisket was tender, juicy, and had a great smoke flavor. The ribs were fall off the bone tender but still had a good«bite» to them. I chose beans and coleslaw as sides and both were tasty.

You know how when a new restaurant pops up really close to where you live and how you want it to be really good? Well, they aren’t always. Smok’n Mike’s Bar-B-Q opened about a year ago really close to where I live. I kind of forgot about it and then the other day I saw some young men on Hwy 6 with yellow posters for the place. The advertising worked. My husband and I ventured in there for a late lunch/early dinner(4:30-ish) on a Sunday. I know, it’s a weird time to eat unless you are 65+(no offense to the senior citizens who may be tech savvy enough to be reading this). So, we head on in. We find a very clean and empty restaurant. It’s like going to a picnic indoors. There are wooden picnic tables with wooden benches(no backs to the benches — see photo). There is a TV showing sports. There is one man waiting for his to-go order and us. We walk in and walk directly to a very large sign that appears to be the menu. A woman asks us if we are there for take-out or dine in. We said dine in(even though we got the distinct feeling that ‘take out’ was the correct answer from her point of view). She told us to have a seat. At this point I get a little confused. Where is there a huge menu on a wall and a counter with a tip jar if we are to sit down? Whatever, we follow directions. So, we pick a picnic table, check out the menu and decide on our food. I ordered the chicken sandwich and onion rings. The husband orders sausage and chicken with beans. Our food comes quickly(that’s a plus!). My sandwich is good except for the little bits of bone I find in the chicken(it’s the broken up chicken you typically get at BBQ places, not quite shredded, but not a breast). The BBQ sauce that is brought out with our food is warm and very good(tangy like I like it!). My husband’s was fine. The beans were definitely bland. The onion rings were hot and crunchy but that’s it. They didn’t really have much flavor. I liked the BBQ sauce but not at the expense of having bad side items. We decided to go ahead and try the pecan pie. We love the pecan pie at Goode Company on Kirby, and we were hoping for a suburban counterpart! We were disappointed. Our waitress asked us if we wanted it heated, so yes we got it heated. When we started eating it, it was ‘right out of the box’ from a grocery store type of pecan pie. We thought they would have homemade pecan pie, but this was totally gelatinous… just not good. It was truly one of the least ‘inviting’ experiences I’ve had in a restaurant. The waitress who came to our table seemed so unhappy and definitely seemed like she didn’t want to be there. We felt weird when the cook/manager came out and greeted us and then proceeded to sit at the neighboring table staring at us eat saying nothing. strange strange and stranger. My husband paid and couldn’t get out of there fast enough. When I asked him in the car why he was in such a hurry, he said he just hadn’t ever felt such an unwelcoming atmosphere. I wanted to like the place, I really did! Mostly for the fact that it’s 2 minutes from our house. I think it had a few redeeming qualities(the Texas toast and BBQ sauce), but we won’t be back.
