3.5 stars, rounded up because the service was super good and let’s face it, there isn’t a lot of food variety out here in Lower Chattanooga or whatever the OTPers like to call it. ;-) My husband really, really likes hibachi. I know it’s not necessarily«cool» or «hip»(or whatever cool and hip people call it these days) to like hibachi these days, but my husband is a really nice person and I love him. So sometimes I like to go eat hibachi with him. It’s the least I can do since I don’t really cook or clean or any of that other stuff that wives are supposed to do(and also I already ate at all the Korean restaurants in the area without him). Anyway, Tokyo Steak House is right down the street from us, in this weird-ass location that’s kind of tucked into a bunch of trees on the side of Horizon Drive. There have been several other businesses in this location over the years and they’ve all failed, because really, it’s kind of a random-ass place to put a restaurant. Despite the weird location, there were already several parties seated and eating when we walked in. I guess they’re getting some business — probably because they’re offering 50% off dinner on Sunday-Thursday and $ 4.95 lunch specials on weekdays. There was even an Asian family eating at the table where we ended up sitting — which made me realize that I don’t think I’ve ever seen Asians eating hibachi before. I was scared to order«real» sushi at some random place, so I just tried a Dancing Eel roll. The roll was just okay. I do like maki sometimes, but I’ve had better. The eel seemed kind of fatty and mushy. It was edible, and it looked pretty, but meh. I wouldn’t really recommend the sushi here. Our hibachi chef came out very promptly. He looked approximately twelve, and he dropped his spatula when he tried to flip it in the air. But despite that, he did a really good job. I mean, his routine wasn’t the exact same tired schtick I’ve seen at every hibachi joint. It was a little different, and he was really nice to the kids that were seated near us at the table. He did some magic tricks for them and kept them(and us) entertained. Our food was really good. He cooked my filet correctly and the fried rice had a nice bit of spice to it and wasn’t too greasy. We weren’t there on a 50% off dinner night(I was starving and I didn’t feel like finding somewhere else to eat when I realized it was full price), but we still only spent about $ 25 apiece including the sushi. The portions were better than at Happy Sumo(the only other hibachi place we’ve eaten recently) and I think the prices were a little lower, too. One thing to note is that they don’t serve sherbet after dinner like they do at Happy Sumo and some of the other hibachi joints. This doesn’t really bother me, but I thought it was worth mentioning. In summary, Tokyo Steak House is a solid option if you like hibachi and want a fun, slightly cheesy dining experience. Be sure to go for dinner on a Sunday through Thursday or a weekday lunch to get maximum value. But even on weekend nights, the price isn’t terrible for what it is. Don’t bother with the sushi. The end.
