I am not one to review companies normally as I am very busy and think that word of mouth is more than sufficient. However, in the case of Dave and Ken at Compustar in Waltham I have to rave about them.
I had a serious problem with my laptop and contact Microsoft Help Desk as I have an account. I ended up paying $ 149 for a service contract with them only to have them damage my software and programs while misdiagnosing. They not only did that but changed computer settings so that my computer would barely run.
I went to Compustar as my sister and nephew had raved about them.
After telling me about the diagnostic fee and the process, they took my laptop, cleaned the internals, repaired the heat sink, reinstalled corrupted programs, tested and repaired my poor computer and had it back to me in 3 – 4 days.
Their prices were ridiculously low and their repairs were done right. After the fact, when I had an issue with another program (not their fault) they reinstalled that as well and refused to charge any additional money,
I love when I can talk to a technician and have them actually explain a problem to me while assuring they can fix it.
Microsoft Help Desk would not even let me speak to the same technician any time I called. I have 4 different techs, 3 of whom made the situation worse. I ended up demanding my money back and spent less at Compustar. A month later, it is still working like new.

I just got back from getting help with my laptop. They are so fast and reasonably priced. I’ve been going to Compustar in Waltham for years. My brother who is tech-​fluent recommended them. I’m not a computer techie type and find it all so intimidating. David always explains everything including how to prevent further issues (such as viruses). It’s also a great place to purchase a replacement cord at an affordable price. Thanks, David!

I had this place fix a power cable connector in my PC, and they did this well, maybe slightly expensive (around $ 130, but I assume this is because it required soldering and taking apart a good amount of the PC, so I was OK with the cost.)
My issue with this place is when I went by to inquire about an iPad glass repair, I left my number and they told me they would call back with an estimate. Two weeks later, I called back, and was informed ‘They do not do that anymore.,’ regarding fixing the screen. I am fine with them not doing this, but not even calling me back was questionable at best.
The person who I spoke with was quite curt with me, and when I tried to ask him if he knew another shop that could repair the iPad, he hung up on me. I was quite astonished someone in customer service could act that rude, especially at such a small shop.

I had an oral agreement with David Chang (one of the owners) for him to replace my computer’s defective Asus 754 Socket motherboard for $ 195.00. Mr. Chang made several attempts to locate a compatible motherboard, yet ultimately told me that he was unable to locate the part, thus failing to live up to the terms of our agreement. When I went to pick up the computer, which was never repaired, Mr. Chang charged me a $ 45.00 diagnostic fee. At no point was I ever informed of this charge.
MR. CHANG’S FIRST FICTITIOUS ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED:
Mr. Chang’s response below, dated 03/​16/​2007 is from the credit card chargeback reversal reason. (He was successful at reversing my chargeback):
«I spend hours Diagnose PC.(The $ 45 is us store diagnose Fee) [UNDISCLOSED NAME] been to us store before for other Service. This time [UNDISCLOSED NAME] don’t want to pay for it. Because we do not want to fix and that why he don’t want to pay anything.

Mr. Chang is saying here that he doesn’t want to fix the problem, and that’s why I don’t want to pay. It’s puzzling to me why a computer repair service would say that it does not want to fix a problem. This changes later, as you will see. Also, I was never at the store for service beforehand, though I once bought a computer case from the store. I fail to see the relevance of this issue though.
MR. CHANG’S SECOND FICTITIOUS ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED:
Mr. Chang’s response below, dated 06÷13÷3007 is from the Better Business Bureau complaint I filed:
«$ 45 is store diagnose fee. I have sign on the wall for my customers. I told him the motherboard may come 3 days. But it did not. He does not want to wait another day. There is nothing I can do.»
Notice how a «sign on the wall» suddenly appears in this version of events. There may be a sign there now, but there was absolutely no sign then. This actually changes to a «giant» sign in a third fictitious account Compustar gave to the Attorney General. I did not include this account because there is no written record.
The main point here — the real contradiction is that unlike the first version of events where Mr. Chang mysteriously declines to fix the problem, now Mr. Chang is prepared to fix the problem, yet I don’t want to wait for a part. This version of events is actually closer to the truth in that Mr. Chang told me that there was a «two» day wait for a part that I in fact agreed to and waited for. After two days of my computer collecting dust in his store, Mr. Chang told me that he was unable to obtain the part, yet I had to pay $ 45.00 for zero services rendered, which he called a «Diagnostic Fee.» This fee never came up at any time and was never part of our original agreement.
I believe Mr. Chang’s two contradictory versions of events is strong evidence in support of the fact that Compustar cheated me and attempted to cover this up by lying. Liars cannot keep their stories straight because fiction is much harder to recall than reality. Police are well aware of this. That’s how they got Susan Smith.

Bought my pc from them about 4 years ago, it has been great. I have had to have it cleaned out a few times and they have done a great job, fast reliable service!
