Living on the West side, I try really hard to support businesses that try to bring better options closer to home, and while Lanta’s gives wonderful effort, they fall short in execution. Normally I love anything that comes in the form of a frozen sweet treat, i.e., ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, and finally frozen custard. The frozen custard sign was what really dragged me into here, mainly because as much as I love Neilsen’s, gas prices keep increasing and frankly, I’m kind of lazy to drive that far from my house. After walking into Lanta’s, which had an open and bright interior, I found myself craving something a little more substantial than custard(although I did get that too, mind you). I ordered a turkey avocado panini with french onion soup, that also came with a side salad. The panini was far too buttery, the bread seemed like the Sara Lee wheat bread you get from the grocery store, the sandwich was falling apart and the ingredients were barely mediocre. The french onion soup tasted like I was drinking a cup of soy sauce(and not the reduced sodium variety). The only thing I can say I enjoyed was the side salad, but I would have gone without the berry vinaigrette(which obviously consisted of thawed frozen berries). The only reason I would ever come here again is for the frozen custard, and I stuck to vanilla, which is normally a safe bet. It tasted as rich as it should, sweet, but not too sweet. But really, they do charge an insane amount for extra toppings, and I’d rather head over to Neilsen’s and get everything I want included in a good olé concrete.

Went for the first time last weekend, and with my wonderful wife, sampled the frozen custard. I’ve been a fan of Neilsens Frozen custard for years, and I have to be honest and say that the Chocolate custard at Lanta’s was really pretty close in quality, but the similarities to my childhood favorite ended there. My wife ordered the Vanilla custard with strawberries(at an extra cost), and it didn’t really measure up to the standard I’m used to. Lanta’s unfortunately does lose points for not having fresh cut strawberries, as the frozen variety really doesn’t cut it for me. The waffle cone tasted as though it was made in the store, but it wasn’t very crispy(underdone maybe?) and leaked melting custard through the walls of the cone, and pretty badly. They did seem to have some different options available, and I haven’t had the opportunity to try the food, but I worry that freshness may not be on the menu, as evidenced by gallons of flavored extracts in plain sight, when products made with real ingredients are generally so superior. All in all, it really wasn’t bad, and perhaps I’m a little biased, but I’d probably give em another chance. They do have potential, perhaps things will improve as time goes on and they refine their flavors.

Decent food, lots of variety of frozen yogurt and custard and tons of toppings to choose from. Their menu is online(bonus) and they offer a ‘Flavor of the Day’ for yogurt, custard and soup. The ambiance is stellar with bright colors, neat paintings and unique lighting fixtures. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We ordered: Grilled cheese with fries & soup, turkey artichoke panini and the bbq pulled pork sandwich. Part of the bread on the pork sandwich was soggy, but other than that, there weren’t any complaints at the table. The side salad you get with each sandwich was a nice change from the wilty, bland, crap you are use to in a ‘side salad’. They brought our custard to our table when we were done with our meals. We ordered the chocolate coconut yogurt(awesome. couldn’t believe it wasn’t ice cream), white chocolate custard with raspberries and blackberries(hella good) and white chocolate custard with fudge(how can that NOT be good?). My total with the bbq pork sandwich and 2 scoops of chocolate coconut yogurt was 10.28. Can’t complain. Thumbs up!
