If you guys are expecting a proper sit down restaurant with fancy silver and table clothes, this is def not a place. But on the bright side, the food is very affordable and the taste was pretty good for what you pay. You could check the portions in my picture. We ordered crag ragoon which was 1.50 $ for a good sized pieces of 2. The fried rice wasnt the best i had but its worth for the prices they put up. A lot of options to choose from the menu. Not much for drinks. I would recommend this place if you want a quick takeout or non expensive asian food.

Looking for a good value in basic Chinese food? China Chef is the best I’ve found in the area. Apparently I’m not the only one because a lot of the customers seem to be regulars. Service is usually friendly, ingredients of good quality, portions are generous and prices reasonable. A decent lunch is ~$ 5 but I prefer to get a quart of whatever seems interesting and get 2 – 3 meals out of it. Obviously the five star rating is not for absolute quality of the food but rather how well China Chef accomplishes their mission, i.e., decent quality food for a fair price.

Good cheap Chinese food. I had the Rainbow Beef and they respected my request for light oil pretty well. It was tasty, reasonably fresh, and huge portions for cheap. Best cheap Chinese I have found in A2/Ypsi so far.

The owner is adorable and super nice. Ordered food to share: hot and sour soup, fried dumplings, chicken lo mein, and general tso’s and chop suey. All super good and fresh. Nothing was overly greasy or overly seasoned. Definitely on the cheap end of the pricing scale. Would not recommend dining in. Just a take out joint. Located in a small strip mall. Excellent lunch specials for under 5.00

This place sucks – if you’re comparing it to a proper sit down restaurant with tablecloths and suggested wine pairings. Judge it for what it is(a grubby strip-mall American Chinese restaurant that opened in 1990 or so, wasn’t particularly adventurous then, and hasn’t much elaborated since) and it’s great. The sub-five-buck lunch specials are a key part of their business, for people looking to fill their bellies cheap, thinking«Yeah, I almost assuredly won’t regret this. Probably.» Meets expectations. I generally get canned soda here, though. Their fountain soda hasn’t been great, and a couple of times I’ve been served a cracked plastic cup. Cookies have long been displayed in a grease-sodden Children’s Motrin box. I can’t tell you why that decision was made. I can’t tell you why that decision hasn’t been revisited. So. With all the above understood, do you still want to go? Great. I’ll see you there.

I just wanted to give China Chef a big shout out today, I am an EMT and worked Christmas, we didnt get a chance to eat for my whole 13 hr shift. So I’m starting to despair that nowhere would be open when I see a beacon of hope from washtenae Ave — the glimmering sparkle of an «open» sign! Afrer an exhaudting day, some general tsaos chicken, beef and broccoli, and egg rolls have never tasted better. So shout out to china chef for being open on christmas – youve done me a bigger service than you know!

First stop: ordered a small String beans and fried dumplings for take out. The string beans were fantastic and the dumplings were very good too. They were gyoza(little dumplings) not the doughy fist sized potstickers as pictured on the wall behind the counter. While waiting for my order, I watched the steady stream of patrons come and go. They are popular. Small place, right in the front building off Washtenaw. Not in the shopping center. I really crave those string beans again, and would happily become a regular customer but the lack of cleanliness of the place is what is keeping me away. I have to give an A-OK for the food but I can’t rate any higher after seeing the facility up close. Oy

I really would have liked to give this a rating of 2.5 stars since I’m choosing to round up. I tried the rainbow chicken from a catered event and it tasted great! There were tons of veggies and a wonderfully flavorful brown sauce! It was really tasty and it made me want to go back and get my own personal order. So, one day I went after church and got the rainbow chicken lunch special. I appreciated that you could get the lunch special even on the weekend because many places only run specials through the week. The lunch special came with the rainbow chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll for $ 4.29. You can’t really beat that deal. Upon opening my order, I saw that the fried rice was just that… fried rice. I saw that it said fried rice but I was expecting at least some sort of veggie medley in it. I would have liked some carrots, bean sprouts, snap peas… something to add a little bit more flavor. I guess I could have upgraded to a veggie or chicken or shrimp fried rice but at that price, you can’t really complain. When I got home and tried my food for the first time, it didn’t taste quite as good as the catered food. It had a slightly off, weird aftertaste that’s hard to describe. I guess I can best describe it as not the freshest. Perhaps this is just the case for lunch specials and not the catered food. It’s a good bang for your buck but in the future, I think I’ll probably opt to pay a little bit more for more flavorful rice and fresher tasting ingredients.

Do not waste your time. Food quality was poor. Price was inexpensive but food had little flavor.

Love this place. They always get my food right and right out. I like their larger menu so i can mix it up sometimes. All the dishes they prepare are great, never a bad experience.

Amazing food and value! Consistent each visit now over a year. Don’t be put off by the«hole in the wall appearance», you will be rewarded! Ask for the«other menu»(actual Chinese food) and try the squid in black bean sauce, pot stickers(fried of course), beef chow fun and amazing salt & pepper fish(or chicken).

Yesterday was the first time that I went to China Chef to eat. The dishes were so wonderful that I want to go back again.

I agree with other low star Unilocalers this is not good chinese food. I went in for lunch and was surprised to hear an asian owner speaking spanish. He was googling me the whole time I was there… I guess thats why I feel it is awkward to eat alone. He was serving the whole resturant by himself with several chefs in the back. I saw my order get finished and sit for awhile cause he didn’t hear them say it was done. I think I might be being overly critical cause I was alone… But as for the food the fried rice was rather bland and dry. The egg roll… forget it. It was hard on the outside and chewy on the inside because there was too much dough. I actually didn’t finish it was so bad. The only redeeming quality of the whole meal was the meat and vegetables covered in sauce because that had good flavor and I thought was cooked well. Honestly I want to say I’d go again but probably not. I’d rather eat alone at a bar where I could at least get drunk if the food is terrible lol

Stopped in for s quick bite. Very reasonably priced. General’s Chicken was different than most but still very tasty. Garlic Chicken was tasty as well. For the price, you can’t really find much wrong here. Fried dumplings were good but I’d swear they were frozen first. Skip the egg rolls. They were terrible.

This place is strangely delicious. If you’re craving cheap, steamy Americanized lo mein, broccoli beef, egg rolls, and hot and sour soup pumped full of MSG, China Chef is your place. Where else can you get lunch for $ 4.29 in these parts!!! If you call for takeout they can have your order ready in 10 minutes. Portion sizes are out of this world.

Great«wok hei» sear on the lo mein noodles. The beef noodle soup was very satisfying. There were a lot of customers coming in for lunch, and I know now that it’s not just for the cheap prices, but the tasty dishes!

Large portions for cheap. Excellent chili oil! The chili pieces in the oil are soft so you can eat them, not burnt and hard. The menu says things are spicy but they aren’t…ask for extra chili!

I forgot exactly what day my husband and I decided to come here, but I’m glad we did! We ordered two appetizers and two house specials. Their Fried Dumplings were such a great price for how much you get! They’re so big and juicy! The sauce is typical dumpling sauce which was still very good. Their Crispy Fried Fish seemed fresh. I’m glad it didn’t taste like it came out of a box full of already cut frozen fish pieces. It was great for the price as well. Their Emperors Pork reminded me of any sweet and sour dish. It didn’t wow me or anything. It actually seemed pretty similar to a regular General Tso’s Chicken. Either way, I wasn’t disappointed about it. The last dish was the Fried Squid. Man was this dish worth it for the price! It was spicy and crispy just like I expected it to be. Yummy! ;) The reason for the 4 stars is because the Emperors Pork smelled the same way as it went in and came out which can be a big turn off(x_x) Other than that, I did like the food and for the prices, the portions are pretty big. I would probably return for the Fried Squid :)
