MTR Hung Hom Station

A really busy station as it is also the main railway to the stations in the New Territories and to Mainland China. It is the hub to change to other transport to take you across to Hong Kong Island, either by taxi or bus. The station is right next to the Cross Harbour Tunnel which links the Kowloon and the New Territories to Hong Kong Island via a tunnel under the Harbour.

Hung Hom is the place to go if you want to access the North Eastern part of the New Territories (i.e. Shatin, Tai O, etc), and also where you need to be if you’re heading into the mainland — either to Lok Ma Chau or Lo Wu or taking a train directly to Guangzhou.
If taking the MTR, the station layout is quite efficient in that you exit from the train from Tsim Sha Tsui east station and then you transfer immediately to the East Rail line;

Living in Sha Tin, I normally take the train to Hung Hom and then change to a bus at the Cross Harbour bus stops whenever I am going to HK island. I don’t like taking the MTR all the way because I hate doing all the interchanges — the one at Kowloon Tong is the worst because you have to walk forever through the station to the next platform, and it’s impossible to walk quickly when you’re in a rush because it’s always so packed.
Taking the train to Hung Hom and then changing to a cross harbor bus is a much more pleasant route. I love that it doesn’t take more than two minutes to walk to the cross harbor bus stops after getting off the train. Exit A is just steps away from the platform, actually — just an escalator ride away. When I’m spending so much time travelling, this really is a blessing. If my train stops at platform 4 (instead of platform 1) it’s a little more of a walk but it’s really just a couple of steps more.
There is no air conditioning in this part of the station though, so it does get really hot and stuffy during the summer months. Ventilation is poor too so there’s always a musty smell clinging in the air. It’s the worst during rush hours when it gets really crowded! But I never spend much time in the station — like I said, exit A, where the bus stops are, is really close to the platforms so I’m usually in and out of the station in five minutes.
The other side of the concourse (exit C) is much nicer. It’s quite big and had a McDonald’s and a Maxim food court. It’s not really a place you would go to eat though unless you are here waiting to take the train over to the Mainland.

I used to go to Hung Hom Station everyday to get to work over at Tsuen Wan West. This place always reminded of New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, due to its large concourse. This station is one of three «ports of entry» in the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) grid, along with the East Rail Line Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Station.
The concourse is split into two platforms, the first of which is the G Concourse which serves Exit C as well as the government entities Hong Kong Immigration Department and the Customs and Excise Department. This side of the concourse is the only place which has public toilets.
The other side, called the M Concourse, serves 3 exits; A, B, and D. These exits also lead to the public transport system outside the station such as buses and minibuses. It also serves as the start of the footbridges to the Cross Harbour Tunnel (for buses to HK Island), students, staff, and academe of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, transportation to Tsim Sha Tsui East, Hong Kong Museum of History as well as the Hong Kong Science Museum, and finally, Hung Hom proper, which can be reached on foot or by bus.
For tourists who have plans to travel in China, the adjacent Harbour Plaza Metropolis hotel is a good choice to rest your bones. Hung Hom Station is constantly expanding to accommodate the planned Shatin to Central Link, a 17-​kilometer project that will be completed in two phases within 2018 and 2020.
