Another wonderful restaurant on Lantau island, Mui Wo, The Kitchen welcomes all types of people, including their dogs. I am serious, cute, friendly dogs lounge within the small establishment and the strange thing is they don’t beg for food. Weird. An Italian friend and I ventured into The Kitchen after moving furniture to my new apartment across the street — a five-story walk-up. Needless to say we were exhausted, impatient and grouchy. I was ready to snap at any waiter who dared not give 110% to their job, or more specifically to our order. Instead of biting off heads, as I secretly hoped I would do, we were treated to a five star service and meal. Jamie, a charming employee, suggested a range of meals for us to try. The pastas and pizzas and most other things on the menu are homemade, he said — except for the mozzarella sticks. I ordered the mozzarella sticks as a starter but their famous, old-time favorite Chicken Pesto Pasta for the main. Now, going off track a little here, in my backpacking days I met a lovely young lady from Vienna and the reason why I remember her is because she taught my how to cook pasta — properly. Not too hard, not too soft. Before then I would overcook the bastards until it was nothing but mush(University times). The homemade fettuccine in The Kitchen was cooked better than a memory of a lovely lady from Vienna. My Italian friend also had a taste. I saw by his expression that he was impressed but simply to proud to admit anything outside of Rome could be called pasta. The pesto sauce was professionally done rather than dumped out of a can, into a pan, and then onto the pasta, and the chicken succulent. Overall a great experience and I can’t wait to go back. The only problem is that, for me, once I try something good I tend to stay with it… so it’ll be a lot of pesto chicken pasta in the near future!
