I consider myself a connoisseur of breakfast. To me, lunch and dinner are optional. I stumbled across Ashland Breakfast & Dinner on Unilocal and I’m so glad we stopped by! My mom raved about their grits and my daughter said her chicken tenders were the best she had ever had. And that girl is probably 70% chicken tenders! We came hungry and left satisfied. The owner/waitress/chef was so nice too! Raisin bread French toast(yum) this time, waffles and pancakes next time!

Little hole in the wall but tasty‼ lol we did laundry around corner the other day. Didn’t even see this place. I had a Denver omlet and it was tasty! I didn’t read the menu all the way. That’s all I got with my choice of bread. Bf burger was and made and very juicy. So all in all nice food for the price. The waitress did say they get their eggs from someone they know who raises the chickens. So that’s nice!

Microwave… sausage gravy is not gravy, it’s soup; see pics. Biscuits are odd shape and taste. Too small for the other sandwhich ingredients. Sausage is good, but microwaved. Biscuits are served hot but microwaved and as they cool turn to rubber. Slightly overpriced as well. There are so many other options in the Ashland area.

On a gray and cool Sunday morning, the Ashland Diner is just the type of cozy, comfort food to start your day off right. It’s tucked in a little strip cluster of stores, right off 95. It’s not big nor heavy on design and frill. Basic eating spot with tasty food. The type of place you visit again and again. And I will. My breakfast wasn’t huge, but more than enough, and it’s quantity over quality anyways. Two eggs over easy, rye toast, hash browns with some onion and nicely peppered and a round, juicy sausage patty. Top it off with two cups of medium roast coffee and starts the day off perfectly.(BTW, I saw a customers omelette and it looked plentiful … our waistline must be considered here). I’ll be back again to try out the daily special — I missed the corned beef hash, eggs and fried apples breakfast! — and to just have a nice breakfast without a lot of complicated options you’d find elsewhere that more times than not aren’t good. Oh, and with tip, a bit more than $ 12, not much when supporting the backbone of our dining experience — Mom & Pop vs. Commercial duds.

The only reason why I did not give this restaurant 5 stars is I am writing this with one visit and may revise once I come back. I will come back! The Ashland Breakfast & Lunch is locally owned and they really try. Is there something really special like a fancy dish? Not sure. Do they provide a great breakfast? ABSOLUTELY!!! I had the egg, sausage and home fries platter. The eggs were cooked exactly as requested. The sausage patty was pretty big and juicy. Gonna have to come back and try the bacon when I come back. The home fries were to what some people may think overcooked but I think perfect. I was asked if I wanted onions so you have a choice to not have onions in your home fries. The home fries had a good amount of crispness and that wonderful cooked on a griddle(good grease) flavor. I can tell the owner cares about her business and is really trying to make this place work. Forget about the décor. You are getting a great local place for breakfast and I believe lunch.

Before travelling from Pennsylvania to the Outer Banks, I researched on Unilocal a place for my family to stop for breakfast along I95. That stretch of 95 has its share of Cracker Barrels, Waffle Houses, Denny’s etc. but unfortunately not much in the way of local, independent restaurants(our preference) open for breakfast and easily accessible off an exit. However, I stumbled across Ashland Breakfast and Lunch(and its good reviews) and am glad I did! Our breakfast was amazing! I had the everything omelet, my wife had a biscuit, sausage, egg and cheese sandwich, and our girls had the chocolate chip pancakes(which they loved — and they are pancake snobs!). All was fantastic. The family that owns the restaurant were extremely friendly and gracious — the type of people you want to give your business to. They even offered to refill my coffee in a to-go cup for the ride, but I was fine after the three cups they already served me! The restaurant is less than a mile off the exit and very easy to find. Please, if you are in the area and looking for breakfast or lunch, drive one minute past Cracker Barrel and you will find a MUCH better spot! We will most definitely stop again next year on our trip to the Outer Banks.
