I don’t think people in oregon know what chili is, it’s not full of sausage or celery like the stuff we had today at Charlies chowder house. Chili has beef and tomatoes and beans, jalapeños, onion, bell peppers etc. spices like chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper etc. The black bean Cuban soup was even worse, it was beans in murky looking dishwater.

We went in Monday afternoon to find they were closed. The cheerful owner(?) said he did not want us to be disappointed and offered the only thing he had on hand, a superb bowl of clam chowder for $ 6.

Without a doubt, the best chowder I have ever had. I have been traveling for a long time, having chowder throughout Astoria, Warrenton, Seaside– even Cannon Beach. and THIS takes the chowder cake. I also ordered the BLACKBEAN burger with cheese and I have to honestly say, that cook makes a MEANVEGGIEBURGER! packed with flavor, the grilled onions and bell peppers is encased over the black bean patty with the cheese and was not even oily! Got to say, I would go here again– without a doubt. The cooks in the back were serving us today, and although there was a lack of servers(And reading the reviews now) I glad we got served by the cooks! Thank you guys for an awesome taste-bud loving experience. Keep up the awesome food for the great prices!

This may be the best chowder I’ve ever had. It was to die for. We also loved the prawn cocktail. A couple of us had the cheeseburger in paradise which was very tasty. The kids topped off their meal with ice cream cones. The service was impeccable and staff was beyond friendly. They have a cool tiki bar that looked like fun. We will definitely add this to our list of favorite places to eat while in Astoria.

Yummy hearty clam chowder with just right pepper flavor! Fun tropical-like atmosphere with funky placemats and kitschy shakers. Salad and cole slaw were fresh. Excellent amount of salad dressing provided in little metal bucket.

Our summer road trip in 2014 took us to Oregon and then down the coast. Charlie’s was our first clam chowder of the trip. Not only were we not disappointed, but it set the bar really high for the other places we stopped that summer. Combine that with the fish tacos, and we had a fabulous meal. We’ll be back in Astoria this next summer, and Charlie’s is already on our list of places to stop.

Like many folks, I’m on a quest for the best chowder on the Oregon Coast. I like mine thick, creamy, and chunky. More clam? Yes please! At Charlie’s, there’s a healthy portion of clam nibbles and yummy hunks of potato. I don’t think there was any bacon in it, which I’m usually a fan of, but it honestly didn’t need it. $ 6 for a big bowl. Add a hearty portion of fluffy garlic bread for $.75-you won’t regret it. It’s simple, yet delicious. The staff are lovely too. Charlie’s has a casual wee diner feel, adorned with kitschy Hawaiian décor and different salt n pepper sets on each table. There’s even a bit of a river view. Definitely worth a visit.

This was absolutely THEWORST place ever. The chowder was disgusting and the 2 staff members had the worst attitude ever. The waiter hates his life and takes it out on the patrons as does the woman. I actually overheard their conversation where the male server said«I have had a smile on my face for about 2 seconds today» she replied ya me too then they proceed to be rude and useless to the patrons. This place is really gross even when you walk in do yourself a favor and go to the Baked Alaskan instead.

Possibly the best chowder I have had in Astoria. They have coffee and chowder, but have a full menu. They also have a bar next door. The décor is simple and not fancy. It is themed like a beach house. Prices are great… They have wifi, something I normally look for now

Doing a chowder taste testing and this is fabulous stuff! Full of clams, baby reds, celery, carrot, mini bay shrimp, bacon and a great herb I couldn’t identify. Yummy !! Only found one other that was just slightly better with a smokey flavor. I would come back here in a heart beat as this gets a 5 when it come to flavors, just the tight thickness and a much better price. Gotta look at everything. Thanks, Charlie!

Very poor service and really bad food. We had the chowder and it was very salty and watery. The fish tacos were dry and tasteless and the taco shell was dry. Definitely keep driving and Unilocaling. Don’t stop here.

Amazing food and amazing service! Had the Astoria Chowder, which was wonderful, then tried a bite of my wife’s crab melt… was so good I ordered another one for myself. The waitress and the cook were super friendly!

The service was super slow. It took 25 – 30 minutes to get our first dish. The fish Tacos were dry. Stick with the chowder.

Had a pretty awful experience here. The moment we walked in they informed us they were out of chowder(what?!). Eventhough we had come for the chowder, we decided to stay and order something else off the menu since we were starving. We ordered some sandwhiches then the server comes back to let us know they’re closing the restaurant and kicking everyone out because they have no chowder. She had to go ask the cook if he could make our sandwiches since we had already ordered. He agreed, but then the server returned a third time to let us know there’s no ham for the sandwich I ordered. That was pretty much the last straw, so we walked out.

Just moved to the west coast and have been seeing this trend in ridiculously slow service, drives me nuts but; I’m getting used to it. This place however takes the cake. Can’t speak for the food, didn’t get that far. Service? What service? The lady working there was on her phone and didn’t get off her phone, my husband and I stood there like two idiots waiting for about 5 minutes while she was on her phone. We left, won’t be back. How do places like this even stay open? FAIL.

I was a bit skeptical at first because there was only two other people in the place and it smelled old inside but the chowder was amazing! It had large chunks of bacon and loads of clams. The garlic toast was a great way to sop up the bits at the bottom of the bowl. If you like chowder this is a great place to go.

Had a bowl of clam chowder and some toasted bread that really hit the spot today! A hint of spice really gave the chowder the zing that pushed it over the top. Had a bit of trouble finding the place thoigh — the Unilocal map was incorrect by a couple of blocks.

This is a smaller restaurant with only one grill, but we had some really excellent food here. Service was very friendly — our waitress was super chipper and very knowledgeable about the area and various tourist attractions. Who knew so many movies were filmed in Astoria? Not me! Food did not arrive super fast but when it did, it was delicious! The mahi mahi tacos were outstanding, probably because the fish was very fresh and well prepared. The bison chili was also very good, with a nice cumin flavored broth that the crackers soaked up. Would definitely come back here again.
