Stopped 2 different days and they were closed. Called their number and got«number not in service». Cannot believe this place closed. Best burgers I ever had!

I tried to stop by there last week, but they had a sign on their door saying closed indefinitely. Sad day.

I feel that my fellow Unilocalers were too generous with this place. I had some decent expectations after reading the reviews and decided to check it out since I live nearby and was craving a real burger. I gave it two stars with one being for the incredible buns and the other for the fresh burger topping buffet. However, the stars stop there. Upon entering the place, we were met with a very friendly women asking if we’d been there before and that the food was amazing and how much we were going to enjoy our experience. I almost felt pressure to feel excited about it. I got the bulgogi burger that was so heavily touted in the reviews. My fiancé’ got the bacon burger. The bulgogi meat was tough, and I was forced to spit several bites out into a napkin because it was filled with tendon. The flavor was lame and not very appetizing. I regretted not getting a real burger so I tried a bite of my fiancé’s burger. Her silence hinted that she was also disappointed. The meat was flavorless and uninspiring. The fries were crispy but the kind of crispy you get from frozen fries reheated in grease. All in all, I would have much rather had a burger at the nearby Jack in the Box that this place. I feel like the anticipation built up by the lady behind the counter fooled many a folk that the burgers actually fulfilled the false expectations. It was a disappointment to say the least. Don’t bother coming her if you want a decent burger.

This place is awesome! They always great you with a smile and are very willing to help you make a selection. If you’re in the mood for a slightly different burger I’d go with their bulgoki burger… it does not disappoint!

Great prices, amazing burgers. Def my favorite in town. If you have not been yet, try and go. They don’t get really busy and there is never a long wait. Owned by a very sweet couple and they are always concerned that your food was great!

First of all, I’m not the snooty type. I *hate* trying to eat at a snooty place. Give me good food, good service, and a good price. The only *real* problem Burger Tex has is being close too the bloody«Y» in Oak Hill. Other than that, it’s got what it takes. I even talked the gal into making me a shrimp-burger(who hasn’t heard of a shrimp-burger???). And yes… the fried okra rocks.(Added to )

The positives? Nice bun freshly bake. That was nice. Fries are really quite good. Negatives? The patty itself is so-so. Tasted a little industrial/cafeteria style to me. Also, the place desperately needs a deep cleaning and an updating. Granted other reviewers pointed out there isn’t much to look at but how many discolored photos of an avocado and a special you posted 10 years ago does there need to be? The bar to dress up your burgers was decent and looked fresh. It’s got some positives don’t get me wrong. But I did feel like I needed a shower when I left :)

Really delicious burgers cooked just right. Nice sized, meaty patty. The bun is fresh baked on site — ultra delicious. Fixin’s bar to build your own — the sliced japs are just the way I like them, not sweet or too vinegary. The menu has lots of different entrees and their fried okra is the best. The fries are perfection. Never have that stale oil taste. They might be the lightly battered kind, I’m not sure how to describe them. But I sometimes think about their fries all week long, they are that crisp and tasty. Soda fountain has Pepsi and Diet Pepsi instead of the usual Diet Coke. Staff is ultra friendly and want to get to know their patrons. I have two complaints — which have nothing to do with the food and I’m tempted to keep 5-stars despite them, but in the interest of painting the whole picture … the bland atmosphere and the loud television are distractions. It’s getting near impossible to avoid TV in restaurants and atmosphere isn’t that big of a concern to me. Turn the TV off for the evening meal and I’m happy to give 5-stars.

Should be renamed«Hangover Heaven»… I tend to avoid burger joints because I don’t eat meat but being in Austin, I can normally find something veggie friendly. Anywhere. This place is no exception. I had a veggie burger with pepper jack cheese. YUM! They have a bar where you add your own condiments. Nice touch. I also had tater tots and fried okra. Clearly, I couldn’t eat it all I just wanted to try it… and yep, it was good. Fried okra has got to be one of my favorite sides. Anyplace that serves them gets brownie points. Definitely try this place. Cheap and delish.

Today, I think I have burgers on the brain. Several times this morning, I found myself thinking about which burger I wanted today. However, just after noon, I found that only had time for a SHORTSTOP. Due to this, I headed down the street to the old stand-by = Burger Tex. IMHO, BURGERTEX = WOOHOO! As Good as it Gets! Now I pretty stingy with my 5-Star reviews — since(as the venerable Veek once said…) Everyone has room for improvement, right??? Well, as Sam Jackson said«Allow me to retort!» Let me give you a few reasons I think this location deserves that elusive 5th star. 1.) CONSISTENCY = I have been to this location numerous times, and it has never failed ONCE to satisfy. The food, store, and service are consistently TOPNOTCH, 2.) FOOD = Buns, patties, fries are always cooked just right — and not overcooked. This is especially important with fries! I like their hamburgers, bulgogi burger, chicken sammiches & sides and ALL are well executed. I like their breaded fries, and I like«building my own burger’ ala FUDDRUCKERS, 3.) STORE =(This criteria is one for ‘my Mom’ — since she is just a stickler for the details). The interior is basic, but always clean and never DIRTYs. This cleanliness includes the drink area, veggie bar, kitchen and dining area. These folks have taken cleaning to a new ELEVATION, 4.) SERVICE = The owners work there, and when you step up to the COUNTER, you too will notice they are ALWAYS cheerful, positive, and helpful. On several occasions, they have even insisted in bussing my table for me. Now THAT will make you feel MIGHTYFINE about shopping local! 5.) VALUE; Burger Combo was $ 7.99, minus a local employee discount of 10% — now there is NAU way you can’t beat that deal! So next time you are in Oak HILLS and have a burger on the brain — go to Burger Tex and get some!

A friend of mine and I were out today running errands when I noticed we were in a part of town I hadn’t been to in a while. «Hey,» I shouted even though my friend was sitting right next to me and could hear me just fine, «This is where Burger Tex is!» After the ringing in her ears died down, we decided to stop by. You should do the same, for this place is awesome. OK, so, when you walk in you’re probably not going to be impressed. I mean, it’s not dirty or anything and there’s plenty of space but it’s not exactly decorated. Which is fine, I mean, whatever, doesn’t effect how the food tastes. I’m just sayin’. However, when you walk in you are more than likely going to be greeted by someone who seems way too excited to be working there. That’s good, too! The cool thing about this place is that all the bread for the burgers and hot dogs are baked right there in the shop that day. The burgers are downright amazing and they quite possibly have the best hot dog in town. It’s kind of a pain in the ass to get to, but if you’re heading North anyway I highly suggest you stop here for a bite to eat. On top of that, it’s cheap. $ 7 gets you a burger with fries and a drink. They don’t serve alcohol, though, but they’re OK if you bring your own. Go check it out!

MMMM… Veggie burger, Regular beef burger, Turkey burger OHMY! This place is «doing it and doing it and doing it well». I love Burger Tex! I would say they have some of the best burgers in Austin and I have had my fair share of burgers. Perhaps you should give them a try or die with a regret. Your choice.

I had the bulgogi burger, which was featured in Texas Monthly’s 50 Greatest Hambugers in Texas. I must say that it compares well to other burgers in Austin. For those unfamiliar with bulgogi, it is a marinated beef cut into strips and flavored with a Korean style that is not overwhelming. The meat was quite plentiful(too much so, I’d say) and tender. The flavor of the beef was not that of a typical burger, but it was not bizarre or off-putting. In fact, I enjoyed the juiciness of it and the flavor was a nice slight departure from a conventional ground beef patty, which can be dry and bland(and often is here in Austin, I’m sorry to say). The bun was indeed very fresh. I would have preferred a bit more strength to it, since the juicy bulgogi began to overpower the toasted highly refined white flour bun. Perhaps the whole wheat bun is more robust. I also took a bite of the regular burger and it was satisfying, in a salty, fatty kind of way(what would you expect from a burger but salt and fat?). I liked it, but it was definitely not gourmet. I would prefer these burgers over almost any other burger I’ve eaten in Austin(Terra Burger, Elevation, Hat Creek, Geaux Burger, Five Guys, Mighty Fine, and some others). Counter Café is possibly better. Casino El Camino is next on my list. The fries had great crunch, but lacked what I call an «honest» flavor. They tasted somewhat more like tater tots than julienned potatoes. Nevertheless, the texture was very nice. The food came out quickly enough and the condiment bar was just fine. It had sliced tomatoes, white onion slices, iceberg lettuce, and a few other burger basics. I liked that I could control my condiment portions. Like the rest of burger tex, I would not classify the condiment bar as anything but downscale and down home. Good enough for me(but not great). I give a 4 because this place delivers what a burger should — hot, salty, greasy with toasted buns and plenty of fresh condiments. A note about the Oak Hill location: Don’t wear your long hair, beads, birkenstocks, and Obama t-shirt. This is a republican(and elder) stronghold. You might get some long stares from the locals.

Hmmm, I didn’t realize this place existed until I saw it on my way to Bank of Averageness today. Went inside. HAD to try the Bulgogi Burger(don’t laugh). The meat could have used a bit more marination(a tad tough?) but the freshly baked bun RAWKED as did the ‘condiment’ station that had really fresh tomatoes, etc. Onion rings apparently are made fresh daily. Even had chocolate cake that was a mouthful of moist — dare I say — chocoliciousness. The décor could use a bit of work — looks a bit like a Federal prison — but I can overlook that(might be yang overload for some). «Counter Mom» was NOT impressed with my Giant Buddha t-shirt but she was still willing to take my order. All in all, a good stop IF you are seeking freshly made and delicious empty calories.

In the Great Burger Wars of 2009, Burget-Tex once again claims«The Best Burger in Town» award in my personal contest. The folks in Oak Hill dish out the biggest 6 ounce burger I’ve ever had. Juicy and Tasty. It’s a Mom and Pop(I think). The«Mom» always greats me the same way: «Hi, have you been here before? Yes? Everything is good! Don’t worry!». I love it! A hostess concerned with my mental well being! Pop just cooks’em up to order. Back to the food: The meat is griddle cooked but not greasy in the least. Whole wheat buns are freshly baked, big and perfect. They are toasted on the grill with a bit of butter which is a great touch. The Fries are not freshly made. They are the«twice fried» style, but thankfully for all the salty crispiness on the outside they are always soft and hot on the inside. But O-Rings and many other things are made fresh daily. Really basic, but truly Texan toppings: basically a bar with lettuce, tomato, onions, jalapenos, BBQ sauce and pica de gallo. That is the coup! Pico. Here’s how I get mine: A #1 combo with american cheese. Squeeze BBQ sauce on the burger and pile it high with pico and a few pickled jalapenos. Squish it down with the bun and just have a moment… The no-caf(Mug) Root Beer is great too! Somehow I missed the cheese sauce that Eddie raved about. I know they had it at the Airport location for years(in a big electric crock pot) and then in vanished. B-Tex is as good as it gets for me in cowtown.

OK, so after reading so many positive reviews, and now living fairly close to the mighty Burger Tex, I finally gave the place a try over the weekend. I did like the vibe of the place, and the woman that took my order was quite nice. The salad bar condiment area was great, giving patrons the opportunity to put exactly what they want on their burger. No paying extra for jalapenos and other toppings is something I really appreciate! At this point, I’m loving Burger Tex. The décor is lost in time… with lots of ‘70s wood paneling. Our number was called within a handful of minutes, and after a day of drinking at Wurstfest, I was ready to soak up some beer with a tasty burger. Sadly, the burger… well… sucked. I understand the awesomeness of a freshly baked bun… but that means that the bun needs to be BAKED completely. Mine was doughy /chewy, as if it needed several more minutes in the oven. A gross bun is not a good way to start. The meat patty was very salty, reminding me of an overly salty Wendy’s burger. Not what I expected from this place. The fries were quite good… not overly greasy… which was really the only saving grace to the meal. Maybe I caught them on a bad day. Unfortunately, ol’ Burger Tex left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a slightly upset stomach. For the battle of the better burger on William Cannon, at least as of now, between Burger Tex and P. Terry’s, my loyalty will remain with P. Terry’s.

Folks, I’m going to lay my plastic-coated cards on the table: I’m new to Austin, having recently moved here from Los Angeles. (Pause to let the«Fucking great, like we need another LA asswipe fucking up our town» feeling to dissipate.) I was prepared for quite a lot of change, but didn’t realize how different some aspects could be. Case in point, Burger Tex. This place is not fancy, not up-to-date, and not due to pull in a Michelin star for fine cuisine. What it is is a really good burger joint with an excellent, nice, and hardworking staff. From the minute I entered the place, the woman running the show put me at ease with her friendly greeting and mellow manner. She came and sat down with some regulars, and it was clear that this was someone who loved what they do and were damn good at it. I ordered an 8-oz burger with cheddar and bacon, fries, and a coke larger than the capital city of Ecuador(I’ll save you the Wiki effort: it’s Quito). I sauntered(much cooler than merely walking) over to the burger bar, and took in the fixings. I like the idea that, if I was so inclined, I could put 48 pickles on my burger without getting punched in the face. When the food came out, things were both great and average. The burger rocked it for me, nicely sized and seasoned, and the bun was soft and friendly, like the embrace of a plus-sized hooker. The fries didn’t rock my world, but I’m sure they work for most. I’ll be getting the O-rings next time out, and there will be a next time. As an overall experience, Burger Tex has firmly taken up residence in my stomach. The staff is terrific, the food is good, and the décor doesn’t take itself too seriously. And that’s something even a former LA dickhead can appreciate.

Burger Tex is pretty damn tasty y’all. Everything is fresh kinda like Fuddruckers. Buns are baked daily, the beef is ground daily & the veggie condiments are fresh cut. How good is that? Walk up to the counter & order from one of the many choices on the menu board. They call your name when its ready & you dress it. They have all the usual things plus cheez sauce & jalepano cheez sauce. I use that to dip my fries in. Did I mention the fries are hand cut daily? The burgers are super juicy. Now that I’m writing this I wish I woulda went there for lunch today. Anyway just go there. Trust me you’ll like it.

I’ve had really good experiences with Burger Tex. Employees are friendly and helpful. Food is really good! The first time I went here, I was extremely surprised to see bulgogi on the menu. Lol That was definitely something I didn’t expect. The choices are massive considering that when you hear ‘BURGER Tex’ that’s all you’d think they’d have: burgers! =) The atmosphere could use a bit of an update/change but the lack of it hasn’t been any kind of reflection on anything else.
