I work at the corner of Anderson Lane and Shoal Creek, and I’m totally sick of all the places to eat around there. Working in the same place for two years will do that. So I was excited when I was browsing through our menu file and I discovered one for TJ’s Honey Hams — that said they delivered! I called them up, and was pleased to discover that they do, indeed, deliver to my area. Not only that, but the guy on the phone was competent and engaging — not like the usual brain-dead, mumbling phone-zombies you usually get. He knew my exact location, complimented my choice of sandwich(although, really, I guess he wouldn’t have said, «oooh, bad idea, that one’s really terrible!»), and said he’d have it right over. Sure enough, my order showed up in about 15 – 20 minutes. I was again pleased to discover that they’d included a plastic fork, a cup of ice to go with my can of soda, several napkins, and had even thoughtfully taped the lid onto my potato salad, just so it wouldn’t jostle loose and spill all over the inside of the bag. I know all that’s pretty minor stuff, but there’ve been plenty of times where I’ve ordered takeout from other places, that forgot to include the essentials: napkin, fork, etc. It just made me think that the folks at TJ’s put in that little bit of extra effort and care — the way your Mom might when she packs your school lunch. Okay, so maybe I’m being sappy. Anyway, I’d ordered the gourmet Italian, and the sandwich was big enough that I only ate half and could save the rest for later. The potato salad was delicious, too. All together, it was probably a little pricier than a lunch ought to be($ 9.00 for the sandwich combo, including tax), but I didn’t really mind the extra expense. Hell, I basically got two meals in one. I’ll definitely be ordering from them again. I’m so glad I found a new lunch place!

My husband has been going here for months and I finally got to try it this weekend. We shared a Spicy Italian Sub — it was solid. Cold and good crispy bread! Cold canned sodas. They have hot sandwiches too which I haven’t tried. The ‘off-the-road’space itself isn’t fancy but has a unique charm to it. Seek this place out and they will set you up. Nice little patio.

This place pretty much has the best sandwiches in Austin. It took awhile to figure out that they had reopened, but they’ve moved from their old spot in the 26 doors shopping center to Burnet Road. It’s between 2222 and Anderson where the old Brentwood Tavern used to be. You should see signs on the road that give a better description of where they’re at. They have pretty huge sandwiches and all of their food is great. They get their bread from Phonecia bakery every morning, meaning that your bread is about as fresh as it gets. If you don’t see anyone at the counter when you walk in, it means they’re probably in the back cooking up some of their fresh roast beef or making their chicken salad or something similar. Seriously, this place is a step or two up from Jason’s Deli. They also have hams and turkeys that can be glazed for you on the spot. If you’re going in for Christmas or Thanksgiving, this is the place to get everything. Oh, and try the beans. They’re awesome.

Hickory Honey Hams is back! They used to be at the 26 Doors shopping center, and they have reopened at the Travis County Farmer’s Market. They go under the name TJ’s now, but they have exactly the same scrumptious sandwiches, and they still deliver. Ham and Swiss on Rye, All The Way. This is my favorite sandwich on earth. They use their fabulous ham, and the freshest bread and veggies. Simply the best in Austin, if not the universe. They also have very good crusty, chewy sub rolls. Don’t forget to get one of their hams during the holidays. So good, you may need a cigarette afterward. I used the leftover bone for black bean soup, and it was my best ever. The turkey is equally good. I am so glad that they are succeeding at their new location. They don’t have much visibility, but they are crazy busy at lunch. Yay for me! They’re gonna make it!
